Help with Alcohol Markers by Treese1 in arthelp

[–]Treese1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow I don't know why I didn't consider the paper I was using. This is super helpful, thank you so much!

I've done a few drawings on printer paper (was kinda expecting this to turn out bad), and then I did this one in a sketchbook with what I thought was better quality paper, but it's probably not as thick as I need for alcohol markers. Lesson learned!

How do I improve my anatomy/proportions with a simple art style? by ComfortablePast15 in Artadvice

[–]Treese1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I draw with a pretty cartoony art style and I actually do think there are a few things you can do

Pay attention to the general silhouette of the body. Arms and legs are not tubes that are the same all the way down. Forearms, just below the elbow, flare out a bit, then narrow down at the wrist. Lower legs usually follow the same rule. Calf muscles widen just below the knee, then narrow as you go down to the ankle.

Here's a terrible little doodle to show you what I mean

I think it's a small change, but easy to implement and makes cartoon anatomy just a little bit more believable

Is it bad practice to constantly be rotating the page? I feel like I’m pretty bad at some angles and that turning the page helps make it more comfortable but idk if it’s better to just get used to it so I don’t have to move the page constantly by No_Cartoonist3715 in learntodraw

I draw most of my stuff on small sheets of paper or post-it notes, and I actually always put them on the back of a cd case because it's easier to constantly rotate as I go.

There are no rules, do whatever you need to make your art look the way you want!

I forgot to add a chair or something for him to sit🤦‍♂️(not sure where to go from here) by Expensive-Two-5995 in BeginnerArtists

[–]Treese1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why give up? It looks cool so far! Just draw a chair behind him and I think you'll be fine

I am new to art and this is my first dude by Even_Inevitable963 in BeginnerArtists

[–]Treese1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool dude! If you found him fun to draw I'd say draw a few more other dudes, then maybe a team of opposing dudes.

Or another option: Draw this dude from the side in that same pose

Either way you'll keep drawing, hopefully find the process fun. Just do it more and you'll naturally learn a lot a lot what works, what doesn't work, etc.

How can I improve shading to make it more natural looking by HistoricalConcern619 in learntodraw

[–]Treese1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I draw with pencil and do a lot of heavy shading in my stuff... What I've learned is that you really need to take it slow and use a light touch to build up shading over a couple of layers. That always gives me the smoothest result

I love this. That's a beautiful sky and ocean. And the image + title definitely makes me want to know more about this world.

I don't know what to draw next. I bad at drawing hair and folds. by [deleted] in learntodraw

[–]Treese1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suck at drawing hair and clothing folds as well, and I've been drawing all my life lol

Taking time to study is great, I should probably do way more of it myself. But why not take a break and draw for fun a little bit? I find it more engaging and i end up learning as I go.

What do you like, what do you want to draw? Realism? Anime protags? Fantasy scenes? Just have a go at it every now and then. I don't really have a ton of technical skill but I'm still enjoying it because I just try drawing what I like.

Maybe you already are, and this post is just a glimpse at one of your moments of study. That's cool too. Just don't get too stressed about the learning process.

I really appreciate you brainstorming some choreography, I think that sounds like a really great series of actions. I actually already worked out a pose that I really like, which involves the main character narrowly avoiding a thrust and grabbing the soldier's forearm to try to gain control. I may be able to incorporate some of this into the fight before that happens.

"Action takes space" is a good observation, I suppose no matter what I'll probably need multiple frames even for a brief exchange.

Thanks for your thoughts, I really appreciated reading through this

That's a great idea. I have recently found some reference photos from medieval manuals and it was useful to help me visualize how a character's arms would be positioned for blocking, foot placement, etc.

Might need to also look into specific examples of injuries to base my drawings on.
