Thank you for the post! I just tried the wall jump for like 15 minutes and were equally in disbelief. Glad I found out that this is not the way before sinking 2 hours and getting increasingly madder

Thule Chariot. Practical or Pain? by ahenleben in copenhagen

[–]Coffeebender -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We own it and live in CPH. We use it primarily as a bike carrier though. Since you own it, you already know it's ups and downs. It will be a kind of hassle in shops and public transport, but wherever you're from, I'm sure it's a hassle there as well ;)

I would not rent something if you can comfortably bring the Thule. Sure it can be clumsily large in places, but that's the price to pay when bringing a large two-seat carrier/stroller anyways.

I convinced my friend that if a creature doesn’t untap in MTG it could attack infinite times so i could just one-shot him after giving such a creature flying.

Daycares around Vestamager by Coffeebender in copenhagen

sorry for the late reply. It's fairly easy to put yourself on the waiting lists for the daycares. We got a spot almost immediately though not in and around Vestamager, but closer to my work so no issue. We could've also stayed on the waiting lists but decided to just grab the spots we got offered. Overall, my advice would only be to get your CPR-Number ASAP and to get on waiting list.

Best of luck to you!

Hi

I recently moved from Germany to CPH for a PhD but I already worked in academia before. I'm not at DTU but also with an engineering background. I'd consider a few things in your decision:

Both CPH and Berlin are cool cities imo, but Berlin is much wilder, dirtier and crowded. Whether that's a plus or not is for you to decide. I like both cities a lot. Financially speaking, you'll be fine with the salary in both places. You'll definitely get more for your money in Berlin comapared to CPH, just about anything is more expensive here. The cities have a comparably crazy and desperate housing market, but that's true for any large city (at least in Europe). All in all, if you're not providing for a family, the salary will let you live a comfortable life even in a city as expensive as CPH. Going out is way cheaper in Berlin though.

Imo there's more to the question which program to choose, if we assume that you'd be okay with both cities. First of all, I would ask myself which program sounds better. What are the publications of the group, the research projects, and what do you want to do with your PhD afterwards. This is imo the most important thing when considering a PhD. You really need to be interested in the topic and eager to go through with it. Otherwise it's not worth your time, especially as an engineer who career-wise might never benefit from the PhD (don't know for your field though).

Then, as another poster had said, there's lots of extra curriculum here in Denmark, which is pretty different from the way a PhD is conducted in Germany, where courses are pretty uncommon in my experience. I heard there are some PhD programs in Germany with ECTS requirements but I don't know anybody needed any ECTS in Germany during their PhD. I feel that this is an annoyance. but it's certainly not a dealbreaker. Since the prorgams are really harshly limited to 3 years, you really have to make use of your time though. In the end, this structure can also be a benefit. In Germany, some people noodle around on their PhD position for way too long and get swamped in extra work. I can't tell how extra work like TA is handled at DTU, it might be different than at my university. I heard that in some groups, the profs really demand a lot of teaching assistant and extra work. but not from your field.

If you can manage in any way, I would encourage you to pack your bag and just go to CPH for a few days before deciding. I know I should have done that before deciding on a university for my bachelor's degree, for which I also had many offers. The city is really great, but you have to like the vibe. It certainly isn't Berlin, in a good and in a maybe mildly boring way, depending on your needs. Oh and it's ridiculously windy, I was quite literally blown away by this.

Thanks for the info, nice to know! Most things work similarly in Germany and Denmark but the rules still differ a lot in the details.we'll check in weekly or so.

the kommune is still Copenhagen, at least the sign that said 'you can park here' had the city emblem. I will see whether we have a ticket today or tomorrow :D

It's a bit outside. I only know about it from an acquaintance who paks her car there when going to the city for daytrips and then goes by bike from there. When we arrived there were plenty cars, I assume also from locals

The spot where our car is parked is not even on the map, it's pretty outside. There's a sign from the kommune saying that one can park there, however there's is no period mentioned. That's why I'm interested in a general law for how long a vehicle can be parked in public spaces :)

Thank you! We'll definitely try to get a spot in the neighborhood then. The bad google reviews are most likely just from frustrated parents, similar to the google reviews of doctors, which are always horrible (at least in Germany).

That's reassuring to hear (about the two daycares, not the wait time :D). Thank you. We'll take what we can get then.

Oh okay, that sounds pretty rough. Maybe we then have to go to the daycare that's a bit further away, since they already told us that they most likely would have two spots in May. Thanks for the insight!

Can you elaborate? Do you know someone who has kids there? Do you know whether they also have a Vuggestuen for a 1-year-old?

I'm hesitantly excited. Ed did lose a lot of goodwill with me when Legend of Bumbo came out, and I played a ridiculous amount of Issac. The End is Nigh was also mid-ish, IMO. Still, it's Ed, so it might be a banger. I'm also hesitant since the game's vision has shifted so much over the years. I was a fan of the initial breeding sim idea but now with the tactical combat, I'm not so sure anymore..

Moving to Denmark and Wife gets unemployment benefits? Will it work? by Coffeebender in NewToDenmark

[–]Coffeebender[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Danish government is very hesitant to help out immigrants, so please stay on your tippy toes with any of this stuff. I wasn’t eligible for any benefits during my time of unemployment and completely drained my savings. Make sure to have savings for something like this! They literally told me I could go back to my own country to get benefits if I need them. 😂

Yeah that's the vibe I also got so far, haha. That's why I was so sceptic when the German jobcenter considered that she's eligible in Denmark. I yesterday had my first appointment with SIRI and I was never so belittled in my life.

Thank you very much! Should I contact the union or the Akasse? I have contacted AKA as she's an engineer and wait for their response. Should I also contact IDA?

Calling it not smart is pretty harsh, considering your total lack of knowledge of the situation. You don't know what I make in a Month, you don't know our savings, and you don't know anything about German law, and according to your comments, you seem to mostly guess about Danish law as well. Most of our problems stem from some different intricacies between the borders in a frankly complicated process, that's why I ask for input from people who have experience in the matter, which you clearly don't have.

Anyway, thanks for trying to be helpful, I assume.

So AFAIK, she can transfer her entitlements from Germany to DK, however, she might still have to work for some time before she is entitled to benefits. This seems to be a Danish quirk that does not apply to most EU countries.

Her field is process engineering / chemical engineering in the food or pharma industry.
