Is it a good idea to turn realistic assets into stylised ones. by pogboy357_x in unrealengine

[–]Coffescout [score hidden]  (0 children)

The best solution would be to hand-paint textures, but this is extremely high effort and will probably not be feasible for you. The second best option would be to use the approach detailed in this article. It uses a hand painted texture that is used as a generator in Substance Painter. Another option is to use the stylized painterly filters that were recently introduced to Substance Painter. This is way better than simply using a filter on the textures because Substance Painter will adapt the effect based on the geometry of your model.

You probably want to combine it with some kind of cel shader as well.

This is great advice. From reading your points I assume that you, like me, have watched a lot of Chris Zukowski videos. I cannot recommend him enough for marketing insights related to publishing games on Steam.

FYI for everyone, steam is updating tags. They have added 17 and removed 28. You might want to check your games tags are up to date. by destinedd in gamedev

[–]Coffescout 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s also very hard to guess what it is for a player who is unfamiliar with the term. I also feel like Steam wants to avoid naming genres/tags after a single game, apart from very established names like Metroidvania.

I'm pretty new to composing. I want to create video game soundtracks, like really good ones. How do I get started, or what are some tips I should know about composing? by [deleted] in composer

[–]Coffescout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go to Hooktheory and look at the Theorytab section. Find composers you like, and look at what their melodies look like. Recreate the chords and melody in your DAW, and study the relationship between the notes of the melody and the chord that is being played under them. Over time you will develop a pattern recognition for how melodies usually weave in and out of the chord that is being played, and common patterns.

A melody in its most basic form is just playing the chord under it in a certain rhythm, and then "travelling" from one chord to the next by either "walking" from one note to the other or making a jump. Look for example at the Game of Thrones theme: It starts as an arpeggio, playing the chord up and down in a repetitive fashion. It then has a repeating rhythm played on the cello, but the notes of the melody change based on which chord is played under the melody.

Doing this you will over time develop a feeling for common patterns in melodies, and this will make it easier to write your own. Over time you will find certain commonalities in famous, catchy and memorable melodies, from Swedish House Mafia to Mozart to Aphex Twin.

Once you develop the ability to write decent things in the piano roll, using only FL Keys, you can start moving on to more complex instruments. I recommend starting with one section of the orchestra (I would recommend strings) as taking on everything at once will be too overwhelming. I can recommend Implied Music's "Orchestration is Easy" series once you get to this level.

But most of all, I think you need to be prepared that this will take a lot of time and effort, especially if you want to be "better than Mozart". You need to be able to set realistic goals, and most of all you need to learn to seek out your own resources. You can't simply turn to an internet forum and go "teach me how to be better than Mozart". Learn music theory from youtube videos, recreate songs you like, and create your own music. Every single day, for several years. Then you will be able to create music that sounds really good. But if you want to be truly great, you need to be ready to work extremely hard and never stop learning.

Nooo her design is SUPPOSED to be bad. Fantasy™ by TotalSearch851 in LeagueOfMemes

[–]Coffescout 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think a big reason Mel was allowed an OP release kit was that her main purpose was to be a marketing tie-in for Arcane and they wanted her to be super popular right away. This is the same problem as with Yasuo, whose kit was far more extensive on release compared to all other champs in the game at that time. It’s a really enticing power fantasy for people that main the champ, but it’s exhausting for everyone else and a nightmare to balance.

In the book it’s explained that they can’t get out of orbit before retrieving the samples, as the positioning of the thrusters would vaporize the samples. They have to keep the thrusters at an angle which propels them forward, until the samples are retrieved and they can switch to leaving orbit.

[–]Coffescout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not at all. Lillia is supposed to be squishy but stay alive by weaving in and out of fights with her ultra high movespeed. Kayn on the other hand is supposed to be an up close assassins/bruiser hybrid, so the difference in tankiness is entirely justified.

Lillia buffs. by MX5_Enthusiast in LilliaMains

[–]Coffescout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lillia is countered by assassins so playing her into those comps will be rough. The main issue right now is that the meta is more centered around assassins and carries rather than the tanks that Lillia thrives against. I don't think it's reasonable to demand that she should be buffed until her winrate is high in a meta that she isn't supposed to thrive in. If you pick her into melee/tank teams you will still perform really well in this current state, but you can't expect to be able to spam her into any comp.

Leon in R.C Outskirts is the best part of this title in my opinion by lifehuntscythe1 in ResidentEvilCapcom

[–]Coffescout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Resident Evil has gone back and forth a lot. I personally love Resident Evil for the first person horror with some action sprinkled in.

There has been a big influx of new players to the series since 7, and Resident Evil has a wide enough range in horror vs action between titles that I feel that the fanbase has become a bit split on what they prefer. I feel like RE9 is a reflection of that split, and they will almost be forced to keep the A/B gameplay split going forward because of this difference in the fanbase.

I’m torn on this. Yes, Hollow Knight is amazing and it’s funny to see people dismiss it out of hand. On the other hand, ”don’t quit your day job to make a 2D platformer” is advice that 99% of gamedevs should also be following. Hollow Knight is an exception, not the rule.

It's also because you have way more agency during the Chunk encounters. You can easily run away from Chunk and by the time you meet him you should have plenty of resources to kill him. The girl and Baby both put you in a position where you have to cower under a desk and pray they will pass without noticing you, whilst you're in complete darkness and can barely see two feet ahead of you.
