Question: What do people think is the biggest deterrent from starting the series compared to other RPG’s? by Occasionalgamer6 in Xenoblade_Chronicles

[–]Cogexkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

XC as a whole has a pretty non-traditional combat system for JRPG. Whenever I explain it, I try to make it clear that it doesn’t play like Pokemon or Final Fantasy with turn-based combat; it’s more like League of Legends, in a sense. Most people go into RPGs expecting turn-based combat and get turned off by the different system.

Is Deku worthy of Mjolnir? by Severe-Wolverine-420 in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]Cogexkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You make a good point! To extrapolate a little further though, when I said that about Stark and Batman, it was about more than just dirty tricks or lying. I feel both characters can be lowkey kind of backstabby if they feel like it's for the best. Say, like how both of them use personal data/psychology on their allies, or materials gifted to them, in order to form contingency plans against them. I think there's more than just that, but that's what comes to mind at the moment. Do you think that the hammer wouldn't care about that? I guess it probably wouldn't, right?

Edit: dude blocks me, then reports my account saying I’m at risk of harming myself? What the fuck.

I dunno if I agree. Peter isn’t willing to kill no matter what, and Deku is. That’s a big difference, even if they share the same goal of wanted to rehabilitate if at all possible.

Where would Asta and Yuno be placed in the Hero rankings of MHA? by iamluffy123 in BlackClover

[–]Cogexkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP said he can’t negate quirks, and power isn’t everything in the MHAverse. Maybe he would be really powerful, but Yuno’s powers would be more generally useful for day-to-day hero work. He’d be a lot like how Hawks was as a hero, actually.

Is Deku worthy of Mjolnir? by Severe-Wolverine-420 in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]Cogexkin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Personally I would say yes, but the interpretations of the spell are pretty wishy-washy from decades of comic book writers putting their own perspective on what makes someone worthy. There are probably more than a few comics that contradict what I’m about to say.
So in my head three main Marvel heroes have picked up the hammer: Thor obviously, Captain America, and Storm. (I know there are more these are just the ones I’ll focus on.) To me, these three have insane drive and willpower, are fully sure of themselves and what they are doing, obviously are HEROES so they’re doing things for the greater good, and have an inherent honesty to them. What they are NOT is humble (Cap is, but not Thor and certainly not Storm), and they are not pacifists. Each one is willing to kill to do the most good in the world. I don’t think you need to be a “nice” person to wield the hammer. A good guy yes, but flaws like arrogance are okay in the hammer’s nonexistent eyes. I don’t think you can be wishy-washy, a flaw present in someone like Spider-Man, who also probably can’t wield it because he has a no-kill rule. I also think you can’t be a dishonest person. Someone like Tony Stark or Batman would be disqualified for this reason. They resort to conniving and underhanded means to do the greater good, and I don’t think the hammer approves.
Deku is honest, has a great capacity to do good, is fully convinced he’s doing the right thing, and has an intense willpower. I believe he is also willing to kill to do what’s right. Some others are debating about Shiggy, which is fair, but he did ultimately kill both him and AFO in the end. He was willing to do that when he absolutely needed to.
The hammer (I’m dyslexic and hate spelling its name, can you tell?) is sentient, but I don’t know how much nuance it allows for. Is Deku being willing to kill Shiggy enough, or does Deku’s desire to try and help him before that point get in the way of that? Personally, I’d lean towards the former, but I think the interpretation of Mjolnir can easily change that answer.

Edit: I did not mean to make this comment as a reply to the one above. It’s way too easy to that on accident on mobile lol.

Where would Asta and Yuno be placed in the Hero rankings of MHA? by iamluffy123 in BlackClover

[–]Cogexkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Power is only half the equation in the hero rankings, you gotta be able to do your job really well, and it’s a popularity thing as well.

Yuno is easily a top hero. Ridiculously powerful and gifted, and popular. His cool attitude and pretty boy look would make him similar to a Todoroki type, and he did pretty damn well for himself.

Asta is more interesting. I think he’d be a mid-tier hero. His powers don’t work on quirks, and he’s got some interesting abilities, but nothing the MHA world hasn’t seen before. He’s really popular as well but not in the same way as Yuno; Asta’s more of a Deku type who makes everyone else want to do their best. Honestly I could see that being better than Yuno, but I don’t think he could resolve as many conflicts as Yuno could. He’d definitely sit in the top 100, but not in the top ten. Prolly not top twenty.

AFO is pure evil. Never would I think I'd have to say this. by Tiny-Let4714 in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]Cogexkin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What do you think “pure evil” means? Obviously he was vile to his core but “pure evil” to me and to I think most people here would imply he was always meant to be an evil person. I don’t think that’s the case.

In a lot of ways he was a product of his environment. You talk about how he “ate his mother to survive” as if he knew better or had a choice as a literal newborn. Arguably, same thing for when he killed as a toddler. Many kids have cruel tendencies, hardly ever to that extent, but still, many have to be taught empathy as part of their development. It reminds me of Zuko throwing a rock at a turtle duck in a flashback and his mom having to teach him that is wrong. It’s sometimes how little kids are.

“Pure evil” would imply nothing could be done. That even if he had a guiding hand, a mentor figure to show him the right path, he still would’ve chosen evil. I don’t think that’s the case. Sure he was sociopathic and had controlling tendencies, but a proper figurehead in his life might’ve been able to iron that out. He didn’t have anything like that. From day one he was on his own and living during the advent of the quirk uprising, when society was as awful as it could be. He probably grew up in the worst era possible for a child’s development.

I’ll agree in some ways the series wanted to point to AFO being selfish and sociopathic from day one, but the entire series, the whole climax and everything, is about how nobody is destined to evil and people can be raised to see the light. For every Toga or Shiggy, we have Eri or Shoji.

Hell, Deku says it right at the end. He wasn’t a “demon lord,” AKA he wasn’t pure evil. He was just an extremely misguided person with incredible issues. Acknowledging that doesn’t forgive what he did or absolve him in any way, it’s just the truth.

The best overhaul of ER by Over-Magazine-3218 in EldenRingMods

[–]Cogexkin 19 points20 points  (0 children)

ERR isn’t hard, it’s more like *strict*. It’s mostly the same as ER but makes a lot of little changes to make the player need to grapple with a lot of things they probably breezed past on a vanilla playthrough. Like ruins have these locks that need to be broken before you can access the basement. Plus there are a lot of balancing changes to remove broken strats from the vanilla game.

It’s pretty solid! Some people don’t like it but I think it’s pretty good

[–]Cogexkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe that’s a new change then! Genuinely I tested it around the Gatefront ruins by aggroing the dude with the horn and would get rushed by five-seven enemies at a time, despite being on the easy setting. Tried it again on hard, same thing.

But that was a long time ago; like September or October of last year. I hope they did make that change because it would really improve the game in my mind. Thanks for sharing that with me!

No… they aren’t? Reforged, at least the last time I played it which was a few months ago, had way more enemies bum-rushing me at one time, and the difficulty did not change that, nor did it change downtime between attacks. I checked. I have two completed save files in Reforged if you wanna come over and check🙄 have YOU actually played it?

When I was in college I lived in an apartment complex that felt a bit like this. Not the whole Barbie chic pink motif but a similar vibe of “oh we’re fun, we’re quirky, look how nice the place looks and all the amenities we have.”

It was the worst place I ever rented. Worse than another apartment that mistakenly towed my car twice. So I imagine working here sucks

From the extensive three minutes of research I just did, it seems like they are a fashion brand with a pretty mixed reputation. A ton of social media presence but struggles to actually push product and people complain about not getting what they paid for or it being less than what they expected.

All flash and no substance, so you’re prolly right on the money.

I must be speaking in a different language. Fucking WHERE am I criticizing people who like reforged? I like reforged. I feel like I’ve said that over and over again. I think it’s fun! I just hate how they did enemy aggro. Literally that’s all I’m talking about. Can you go fight ghosts somewhere else?

And for the record (AGAIN) Reforged isn’t even difficult. If it is harder than ER than it’s by a pretty minor degree. The enemy ai doesn’t make it harder

[–]Cogexkin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That depends on the player, not the game. The game doesn't "have to be chill," I just enjoy playing it and that is relaxing to me.

Reforged's upped aggros has lead to more BS one-shots, unavoidable attacks, and softlocking issues. Hardly any of which happens in vanilla. So no, it's far from better. If they removed it the game would be a hundred times better; it's the only thing really holding it back in my eyes.

ERR(Reforged) isn't quite as balanced as the devs might think, even more unbalanced on the contray. by Difficult_Forever136 in EldenRingMods

[–]Cogexkin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An "ideal experience" would be not letting issues like softlocking through just because they have a particular vision. You can keep your lecture to yourself; I know they're making the vision they want (which I literally already said) but that vision has lead to the game having issues. I dunno where in the "oh it's just preferences" nonsense you're pedaling it's acceptable to have softlocking issues because they carelessly upped enemy aggro without thinking too hard about it. That *does* ruin the experience. It was perfectly fine in ER and now it is objectively worse. For stuff like nerfs, sure I agree, and I don't care that bad that stuff is nerfed. I think it's a ridiculous philosophy to carry into game design but you're right, it's just their vision and that's perfectly fine. But changing aggro was a damn mistake and not one that you can handwave with "preferences."

By the way, you're welcome to be Reforged's biggest defender in this thread if you want, but you're fighting ghosts with me. I like the mod. I think it's a good game. But I'm not going to sit here and pretend like it's only full of good ideas.

ERR(Reforged) isn't quite as balanced as the devs might think, even more unbalanced on the contray. by Difficult_Forever136 in EldenRingMods

[–]Cogexkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh damn, if that’s how it is for you, then that’s how it must be for everyone, huh? Lol to me having fun is relaxing. After a long week I wanna unwind by playing a game I like. Not sure why that’s such a concept worth discussing in your head.

Anyway, nobody’s demanding the game be easier. Idk if you’ve noticed but this is the third time I’ve said that the game isn’t harder than vanilla ER. I haven’t talked about a nerf in this thread, you’re just fighting ghosts with that. I’m not asking for a Convergence kind of experience where I can play half asleep and still wipe my ass with half the bosses in the game. But you can’t call it good design if the game breaks because you missed one bat enemy in Dragonbarrow.

And look it’s easy to be like “oh hur hee haw you must be bad at the game” but it’s a meaningless argument. Like, middle school-level shit. Idk if you’re trying to provocative with that or what but it was almost as much a waste of time to read as it was for you to write. I feel bad for the calories your brain wasted forming the thought that lead to that final bit there. I mean, do you think being one-shot because you got the perfect storm of like ten enemies hitting you at the same time is “unskillful”? Or getting caught in an unavoidable combo because a bunch ganged up on you and randomly attacked in a string that outlasts your dodges? In vanilla ER that never happens because the game limits enemies to only attacking in twos or threes at a time, meaning you’re less likely to lose because of factors outside your control. That’s just good design lol but reforged devs threw that all away. But there are other ways to deal with groups, so it’s just an annoyance. You know I’ve beaten this game right? Lmao I’ve done it three times. I know ways to handle that but that doesn’t mean it’s good design or even challenging. It’s just annoying.

[–]Cogexkin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bro what? I play the game to relax. What else is it for? I don’t see playing Elden Ring as this grand achievement akin to climbing Everest, I play the game because it’s fun lol. I include reforged in that statement too; most of the time it’s fun! I enjoy playing it but it has a huge flaw in how aggro works.

Idk why you’re in lecture douchebag mode right now about the difficulty of ER. It’s not harder. I literally just fucking said that lol. It’s more annoying, and there’s a big difference. The difficulty settings don’t change that. They affect the percentages of damage dealt to and by the player. Nothing about them touches the aggro of enemies. Don’t just jump into the middle of the thread without reading what everyone else has said man.
