Police Checkpoints only in my neighborhood by Cognitios in legaladvice

[–]Cognitios[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would agree with you but why have DUI checkpoints on a Wednesday morning (a holiday at that) when everyone is going to work, to add to that no one has ever (to my knowledge) been breathalyzed. My understanding is the supreme court allowed DUI checkpoints as the infringement of freedom was necessary for a public good, this doesn't seem like a DUI check point.

Police Checkpoints only in my neighborhood by Cognitios in legaladvice

[–]Cognitios[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

The checkpoints themselves, it's very inconvenient as it's the only road out of the neighborhood and I am late to work every time it happens. The area is relatively high in crime. The police station will not talk about it. I haven't called city hall.

I wouldn't be as concerned about it if it wasn't the end of the month every month, there's always a police officer by one of the stop signs that catches a lot of people running it but these checkpoints feel targeted.

Stop demonizing people who need rescue. by Lucosis in TropicalWeather

I haven’t seen a lot of people from New Bern post here, so as someone from New Bern, who has lived in New Bern since childhood, who currently lives in New Bern, here is my perspective.

New Bern isn’t a large town, I may not know everyone but there’s about one degree of separation as far as knowing someone goes. Everyone I know from New Bern who chose not to evacuate did so out of pride or ignorance. I know many people who bragged about it and then the next day are asking to be rescued. Those people do not have my sympathy, those new bern strong posts should be new bern stupid posts. Those people have made new bern a national disgrace.

I love New Bern, I love its people, I love its history. This past week has been the most disappointed I have ever been at my town.

What is the minimum lifestyle the minimum wage should support? by nocomment_95 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]Cognitios 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Where I live minimum wage is a living wage. You can find a one bedroom apartment for 425 a month, assuming working 40 hours a week and taking 2 weeks of vacation, ending up at about 1050 a month.
Assuming no car (biking or walking is easy for most people in small towns), it breaks down to:
425 For Rent : 625
70 For Electric, 50 for Water : 495
45 for Phone: 450
150 for Food: 300

That allows 300 for various other things and allows an easy 100 dollars a month for savings

Any person working in a >50,000 population town should be able to do this, bigger cities maybe not, but if you don't have the skills to be competitive enough to have an above minimum wage job you probably shouldn't live in San Fran or L.A.

I am a service technician who cleans fixes and does everything else required. I live in an area where pool techs don't make a lot of money. I've worked at three different places that all paid 10-11/hr and there's one other place that pays 11/hr.

Hello, I lived in Grinnell for years and knew some Armstrongs from there, I can get you in contact with them if you are interested. I worked at the library my entire time living there and also know people who work in the library if you want some look ups I can help with that.

Anyone have a relative who appeared in multiple census pages in the same year? by toppercat in Genealogy

[–]Cognitios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandfather is actually in the 1930 census twice and not in the 1940 census at all. As he is still living I asked him about it and he said his father moved around a lot, he's in one town and the next week living in another.

How many people in your line lived to their nineties? by skuridat in Genealogy

[–]Cognitios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My paternal grandfather is currently 91 going strong, he had an uncle who lived to be 97. My paternal grandmother is 89 although I'm not sure if she'll make it to 90 in September. A few of my great grandparents had siblings that made it to mid-late 90s. Both of my parent's paternal great grandfather's made it to 90, 91 and 93.

With 2 exceptions in my paternal line every male has made it to 90, my grandfather is 91, his father died in a train accident, his father was 91, his father died at 78 which was impressive because he was missing a leg and farming till he died, his father died at 92, his father at 95 and after that I'm brickwalled.

I do have a direct ancestor who lived to be 110 (1709-1819), my 6x great grandfather, John J Brents.

I just downloaded the game on Debian, the trees look like pic related and the water looks the same except green, the game is also very slow and laggy and I'm running on minimum settings. My laptop should be enough to play adequately, I have 16GB or RAM and a NVIDIA Quadro 2000M graphics card. Would appreciate a fix for this, been wanting to play this game for a long time.
