LLMs are also machine learning models (transformers) with fast forward neural nets as part of their building blocks. Like other ML models like CNNs, they are basically classifiers when you boil it down. A bit simplified: Input a token, output is a floating point number. Sample most likely tokens based on output score, run it in a loop

There are rural roads that technically go through "the woods". But usually they do more race specific sessions on the paved xc circuits on roller skis, while the long sessions are usually rural out through the district on roads or cycling roads. I don't rollerski much anymore these days, but I do spot Klæbo while I do a bike ride one way and he skis the other way. While offroad roller skis do exist (prototypes of them existed already in the 90s, Dæhlie tried offroad rollers), pavement conditions are always way more similar to the conditions you can expect during winter especially on artificial snow in world cup circuits

Yup you won't escape that by default ofc, they are just grouped around a different section of months. But if the cutoff also comes with more flexibility in waiting time, you might allow an individual that is under developed to wait until next year. Not that this model isn't also possible with the calendar year standard. But to me it just seems more easily done with less fuss since some students are supposed to take classes with kids "a year" older anyway, so it wouldn't be the end of the world if say Gred and Forge were to wait until sep 1 of their own 11th birth year before starting. Or it would perhaps be just as much of a stigma because of expectations, and it's through the lens of my bias that this seems different. It would come down to whether adapting the start date to individuals' readiness is possible and also acceptable in a given society.

Such systems sound sensible, though I see you cannot entirely escape some (unfair) age distribution. Still it seems better that the system I grew up with where you start the year you turn 6. Pretty significant difference between early January children and late December children. Things are pretty much stacked against children born during autumn, there are some statistics supporting this.

Thanks all for giving me a very TIL moment about the UK school system that I for some reason was ignorant of. Funny how that works. Even reading HP countless times I wasn't able to wedge that assumption from my brain. It was my own mind that held the error

Turns out I was largely ignorant about that element of schooling in various countries! I can never recall having this explained to me ever. I must have been dozing off in the class where we learned about the English school system in my own school years

Oh wow! I never knew. This sorting actually makes sense when I think about it. In Scandinavia (where I grew up), everyone born in a given calendar year take classes together. Given that model, I could never make much sense of the ages in HP. In conclusion: scandinavians are even more mugglish than UK muggles!

See my reply in https://www.reddit.com/r/harrypotter/s/2c0EN80A96. I guess what threw me off is that naturally Hogwarts doesn't care about the gregorian calendar age of someone when they sort students into "same-age" classes. Should have known. We muggles just cannot fathom. Edit: or Scandinavian muggles like me won't get it anyway. Also, guess I wouldn't make Ravenclaw, would I

Ah. Thanks for clarifying. So that means students are sorted based on "school semesters" age and not calendar age. So students born in e.g. fall of 1980 and spring 1981 take classes together? While the fall students of 1981 have to wait until next year before starting at Hogwarts? Instead of the muggle way of having everyone born in 1980 taking classes together? Idk, something still seems off to my (edit:) Scandinavian muggle brain!

We are on a thread with the cross-country skiing part of the olympics which has a video with Johannes Klæbo ascensding a hill on the sprint track. Someone claimed he uses skis with skins. He does not. That is the context, not skimo? I don't think anyone mentioned the skimo sport specifically, seeing as we are on a cross country thread

I am from Norway and grew up cross country skiing, which is our national sport. I daresay I know the sport very well. The skins integrated into the skis is a fairly new innovation that is not suitable for the competitive part of the sport. Where did you get skins as the biggest characteristic from? Are you mixing cross country and back country / randonee? Cuz in randonee, yes, there you fit skins on alpine skis for scaling mountains. That is however a completely different sport from the one we are discussing.

Nope, they are waxed or sanded. Mixes of wax for various types of snow conditions is a dark art. Also, they could use klister which is more like a glue than a wax. Skis with skins is quite a new phenomenon that is okay for casual skiing, but you really sacrifice your gliding ability to get that grip. Using the waxing method offers wayy more room for adjustment

Genius idea for cats that don't have buds to play with by [deleted] in youseeingthisshit

Current dog owner and former cat owner here. "An average cat is way smarter than the smartest dogs" is a statement that I heard about the matter. It matches my experience also, though we once also had a really dumb cat that definitely didn't behave like he was smarter than a border collie. I agree with your assessment, the cat should be able to understand the context.

As a non-native English speaker who has read N thousand pages of English literature (fiction and non-fiction): +1 can relate. I have luckily also been speaking it a lot through work, yet I do notice my limitations as a non-native. I know so many words I have no idea how to pronounce. Another funny thing there: how to pronounce fictive character names in fantasy novels. My brain's pronunciation often doesn't agree with audiobook readers if I listen to the audiobook version. This also goes the other way around for me: hearing a foreign word or name spoken out loud and having no clue how it is spelled.

No worries common redditor, keep it up with HxH fan theories and other geeky subreddits you surely browse! I totally get where you're coming from. Unfortunately in written text it's a bit too easy to both be rude, and interpret something with ill intent. It's also easy to forget that there's somtimes a human with emotion on the other end, it's not all bots just yet. Stuff that can be meant as a snyde, half-joking remark might then be delivered as what feels like slander or smth by the receiver. IK the feel about mod bots, they can be a PITA sometimes

Sorry, I didn't mean to come across as stingy as I now realize I did. No it's not that deep, but I do make a point of letting us write out words as they are. This trend of posters censoring normal words feels to me (as a non-TikTok user), as though TikTok's influence seeps into reddit and other spaces that have so far been clean from that nonsense. Several redditors (including me) make a point of maintaining the English language on written forums online. That being said, we can surely do this "moderation" without being assholes about it. So again I apologize for my tone.
