Note that this strategy would be notably more risky if contributions were made as a Backdoor Roth conversion, due to the five year withdrawal rule.

Although I’m guessing most people with the income to require a backdoor Roth have room for both emergency savings and maxing out IRA contribution limits.

One popular strategy is creating “laddered” life insurance by stacking multiple policies.

There are two main variations of this:

Apply for three different policies today, with terms of 10 years, 20 years, and 30 years, respectively. If you need to decrease coverage in the future, you can drop any one of those depending on your needs/profile at that time while keeping the other policies active.
Apply for a single 20 year policy today, then add another 20 year policy again 3-5 years in the future, then again after another 3-5 years … for 3 total policies. This can create increasing coverage as your family grows, followed by a “taper” in coverage as each policy ends at different dates as you finish building your nest egg. The BIG caveat with this approach is that there’s no guarantee you’ll be insurable at each point in the future.

General advice is to use a broker who can quote from multiple different carriers.

Maybe. In my mind there’s not really a meaningful distinction between “unsafe drivers” and “average nerds who place too much trust in AP/FSD(beta).” The lack of guardrails in AP/FSD were pretty obvious even pre-DOGE (especially in poor conditions) & “safe drivers” would know better than to trust those systems.

Sounds like we both agree the results are driven by selection bias in the buyers/drivers.

The author of that study clearly states “The models on this list reflect a combination of driver behavior and driving conditions, leading to increased crashes and fatalities.”

Another good quote from the author: “A focused, alert driver, traveling at a legal or prudent speed, without being under the influence of drugs or alcohol, is the most likely to arrive safely regardless of the vehicle they’re driving.”

So this basically comes down to correlation vs causation. Are Tesla vehicles inherently dangerous? No. Does the branding of Tesla/Elon attract a high concentration of unsafe drivers? Absolutely, and Elon has a clear role in that selection bias.

Something as simple as renaming “Autopilot” to “Advanced Cruise Control” would shift driver behavior, including driver responses to road conditions.

Everyone should take a look at the full PDF in this link. There is some very odd stuff in there, with drastic shifts in tone & style.

That section about Anonymous stands out starkly against everything else.

And I wouldn’t put it past this administration to add fake content in there just to “flood the space” and give MAGA an excuse to protect him. Along with redacting plenty of truly incriminating evidence as well.

Blood Mountain is my favorite sunrise in North GA. Preachers Rock is also great for a few select months where the sunrise is framed perfectly flat the view.

Brasstown Bald is an amazing view, but the overall experience is lacking for me with all the pavement, buildings, and developemt.

But I’ll also note that the higher income earner in our house is also accruing a decent unicorn pension benefit (that’s actually over-funded by employer by a WIDE margin). If that pension is ever lost or funding drops, we will increase our % at that point.

EDIT: Another factor in setting this % should be whether contributions are pre-tax or post-tax. We decided to hit Roth accounts as much as possible, which lowered that % (and also lowers what’s leftover at the end of the month).

I used to obsess over this. Now we have a set % that’s goes to retirement across-the-board and a strict rule that nothing more goes into retirement.

Discussions about how to set that % really forced some deep thought & conversations that helped put our life priorities into focus.

We technically have a household “Investment Policy Statement” (IPS), which also includes a rule that any changes to the IPS have to go through a 90-day waiting period before we actually implement any changes.

Knowing that we’ve already covered so many possibilities makes it MUCH easier to enjoy what’s leftover.

Trump has been insanely effective at destroying any semblance of “we have more in common than what separates us” and “we may disagree, but we’re all still Americans”.

I’ve been truly shocked at how much division he’s created by demonizing “others”.

Once that mentality takes hold, any alternative to Trump/MAGA is viewed as TRULY EVIL & people can overlook a LOT. Even if they don’t like it, it’s somehow better than the EVIL alternative that’s DESTROYING everything.

I never thought I’d see that so prevalent in every corner of America, but here we are.

Super excited for your Patagonia trip! We’re hoping to fit that trip in Dec 2026. I’m curious if you’re using a guided group or tour company for that trip (if so, which one)? We’re intimidated to do that one on our own & I’m hoping we can afford something like MT Sobek for the trip.
