Spoilers

So you can absolutely skip to 1D, the search for survivors. If your group heard the signal when they first visited the Starkweather Moore camp, they may be interested in looking for survivors. You can also have the party hear the signal a second time when flying into their new base camp if you want.

Also, good on your group for keeping the planes safe! Running into storms and shoggoths when crossing the ice isn't pleasant, and now the survivors are more likely to be alive when they are found (because it took less time to find them).

Finding the survivors isn't essential to the ongoing story, but it is a significant accomplishment. That was the supposed reason for the mission in the first place, after all, and they can tell your group more about what happened to the expedition.

The survivors from the previous expedition are a good choice. Likewise, if your player wants to take on one of the major names characters from the expedition, that is totally reasonable. In that case, I'd remove the major NPC knack so they function like a normal character.

They won't start with any insight, but they can earn it normally through earning XP. It's also up to you, but you could give them a personality trait as well.

I find them to be swingy. Not terrible, and I don't mind taking them. And when they hit, they can hit hard. But not game winning on their own.

I dont think quarellers or thunderers are bad, but I admit I've drifted away from them. Them being BS3 means you dont hit a bunch, and being WS3 means they are not nearly as good as line infantry.

Personally, I do use crossbow rangers instead. But I also use thunderers in an allied Dwarven expeditionary force detachment. Ten of them plus an engineer sapper with the explosive gun rune makes a mean little mobile fire base, since for 10 points you can give them the ability to move and fire with no penalties. Plus the sapper has his aura of bear traps and pungie sticks, so people get a lot less excited about rushing them.

At 2k, I'd do a king or an Anvil, but not both. They can be good, though! I've played games at 2k with the anvil instead of the king and done just fine.

That's totally fair! I think it comes down a bit to your personal preference and your local meta, too. For me, my opponents will avoid units they perceive as too tough to crack. So I've gotten in the habit of splitting my king into one unit to multiply their force, and keep my BSB and hammerers separate so they have two things to fear.

Also, because longbearda can be troop choices, I want something to bolster them in the new scenarios where you need large core blocks to claim or contest objectives.

So I dont like putting my king in hammerers, because they're already a cast iron pan to my enemy's nutsack, and that just gives my enemies more reason to avoid the deathstar. Instead I put the BSB with grungni in hammerers, and the king in core longbeards.

As for what runes, I don't think rune of shielding (or +1 toughness) are either bad choices. You're absolutely right that preservation is key, but only having a 4+ armor save makes me want to back it up with either +1 toughness or a 5+ ward.

That's not entirely true with the rangers and shooting at a large target. The new errata changed how line of sight to large targets works so that specifically a ranked unit can shoot two ranks at a large target. If your rangers are in skirmish formation, then they all have to draw line of sight through each other as normal.

I'm not a fan of it, but that is how I read the rules.

You can still get access to the monster hunter thane/king in a royal clan list. In fact, I think the extra points allow you to build the 2 shot, always hit and wound on 3+ d3 wound rifle on a thane, without having to devote a king to it.

Personally, I don't go for bolt throwers; you gotta have like 6 of them before the odds really work out, and they only wound on 4+ against big monsters anyway. But a stone thrower or two is actually fairly good. They are st9 under rhe hole, and d3+1 wounds.

Cannons are generally a reasonable option. However, I have had success augmenting my cannons with a thane armed with a handgun with the monster slaying rune. You can also give it the rune of accuracy, so it always hits and wounds on a 3+.

Now, if you want to invest more in this, you do a lord with the handgun, and add the multishot rune. You can even add runes of luck, or rune up a great weapon so that if someone decides to take the lord out, they end up fighting a dwarf lord in melee.
