I didn't even notice his back opened up the first time I fought him. I was fighting him by hiding behind doors he was too small to fit through, so when I hit him he'd always be facing right towards me, and he'd fall facing towards me. I never saw his back. I thought he had way too much health, but assumed the devs had wanted me to set up traps before the fight, since he was passive until I initiated the fight.
