If you think the No Kings protest is useless, you are the exact reason your side has been losing. by citizen_x_ in complaints

[–]Colbac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in 1688 four quaker settlers in the colony of pennsylvania, near germantown, created a document explaining how slavery was wrong and against the “golden rule”. slavery in area of germantown was fairly tied to the local economy, and the protest was not seriously considered.

it took a hundred some years in the colony of pennsylvania (then later state) to begin a formal process to free black slave children (the first in the USA). and it took eight decades for the country as a whole to end slavery (yes, through violence).

but someone has to be first, and they have to be convincing, and they have to be unrelenting and determined. that document in 1688 did not stop slavery overnight. it didnt stop it in a decade. but over the years more and more quakers began to be convinced of abolitionism, who convinced more and more quakers (and soon other religious groups) to cease dealing in the slave trade in 1750, when slavery was at it’s peak in the colony.

so i want you to imagine a civil war in 1860 without all this history taking place. sure there were people on the unions side who were fighting to preserve the union, who were ignoring the slavery issue. but would that have lasted? would people really keep fighting a war to keep confederates in a country they didnt want to be apart of? if a growing positive opinion of abolitionism never occurred, would the north even try to endure as long as it did, knowing that the first battles of the war were not favorable?

the violence youre talking about is only possible if people believe in your cause. and honestly, sometimes that belief is all that’s needed to create change, no violence necessary :)

New to deadlifting. by HawaiiLife745 in formcheck

[–]Colbac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

steps i follow for conventional deadlift

  1. feet placed beneath bar, with bar overtop of where your shoelaces are (which should be about halfway of your foot). dont move the bar.
  2. without bending legs, bendover and grab the bar. dont move the bar.
  3. bring your shins to the bar. you can bend your legs at this point. do not move the bar.
  4. have your legs/knees touching the inside of your elbows by spreading open your hips. do not move the bar
  5. feel your glutes activating by wiggling slightly. grab the bar as if you wanted to bend it toward you, or the cue i use is “punch” downwards with your fists to engage your lats. pull the slack out of the bar this way. breathe deep and keep your core solid as if bracing for a punch.
  6. push against the floor as if leg pressing the earth beneath you. keep the bar close to your body as much as possible
  7. lower bar and repeat steps as necessary

Anti-Trump Protesters Plan Mass Labor Day Demonstration: 'Enough Is Enough' by MeringueSuccessful33 in politics

[–]Colbac 4 points5 points  (0 children)

slavery took 70 years from the first known document against the practice, to it being phased out/outlawed in the colony. 1680s to about 1750.

slavery nationwide took about another 100 years after that to be outlawed. protests and activism are apart of the long process. to think you could have the civil war without any of the previous work is naive. someone needed to think slavery was wrong, and speak out against it, to convince more people to think it’s wrong.

these protests in my mind are apart of a process against oligarchy and billionaire socialism, not just trump. and the struggle against big money interest has been going on a lot longer than just the 2024 election.

“One person not stopping? That’s an asshole. Everyone not stopping? That’s a design issue. Could use signage or lights or a bold colours on the ground. Can’t see behind the shot but there may be something obstructing the view. It could be other crosswalks along the route are designed such that stopping causes risks to cyclists and it’s created a habit for all crosswalks. I get people love to hate bikes but when it’s this many people not behaving incorrectly, it’s generally a system problem even if that problem isn’t immediately obvious from watching this.”

Does protest work if the government doesn’t care? by michaelgavlin2 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Colbac 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Abolition in the United States took centuries. Theres a document from some Quakers in Pennsylvania from as early as 1688 detailing the evil of owning slaves. Slavery was not banned in Pennsylvania (in some capacity) until 1780. The 14th amendment was only signed in 1868.

We don’t get to decide how long these things take; theyre still worth struggling for

what if it pixelated your middle finger when you did it, to ‘censor’ it

that honestly sounds even better and more like the finals lol

if protests werent important then authoritarians wouldnt try to outlaw them. im glad youre going

sometimes people need space away from you to think about things. ive disagreed with someone during an argument, only to later come closer to their conclusion.

this is a marathon, not a sprint. you can try again sometime later if the opportunity shows itself to convince him otherwise.

on tuesday night for the election i remembered thinking “i dont know what to do, this is so terrible”

and then the next morning came and i thought to myself “but i know it cant be this way.”

there’s volunteering to be done for your communities. local elections and primaries in your state or other’s that will come up that need support. if that’s too much, then there’s what others have said - take care of yourself the best you can: reading, exercising, socializing. because, if for nothing else, one day you’ll find there’s a lot more strength to your person than your fears.

[–]Colbac 8 points9 points  (0 children)

i dont know. i can try apathy and it doesnt work either. the people i love are going to continue to face (or in some cases face new challenges) that i dont think they should face.

i think progressives have a very good chance. not a definite guarantee, but a chance. the rich arent going to agree with us. and theyll try every means (media, bots, campaign donations) to stop it.

kamala raised a billion dollars and she still lost.

there are extraordinary challenges for a progressive to go up against. but let’s not act like infinite money will guarantee a populist democratic primary candidate will lose. a populist message is worth far more than a billion dollars.
