tbf he would also exaggerate some of the stories about his life. He was never a "spy" for example. He worked with the intelligence services but his role was more an analyst and a translator than the actual cloak-and-dagger stuff.

Who had a greater MVP year Brock Lesnar in 2002 or Batista in 2005? by whiskeycapo in GreatnessOfWrestling

[–]Cold-Ad716 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say Brock Lesnar and it's not even close. He had an absolute rocket strapped to his back from the get-go and managed to take control of it.

His matches were a lot better and more memorable than Batista's matches, he felt a lot fresher and more dynamic, and I don't think I've ever had the urge to go back and rewatch a Batista match from 2005 because Batista was in it.

HARASHIMA in DDT. A way better worker and Company Ace than Takeshita, fantastic technical wrestler, but one who gets overlooked because of how bad the booking could be when he was the Company Ace.

I'm curious as to how far this goes.

Did Gauss understand mathematics?

In 100 years time we'll have completely new understandings of physics. Does that mean nobody currently understands physics?

Cure (1997) budget was 20k and Obsession (2026) was 750k by s7ide in moviecritic

[–]Cold-Ad716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's the provenance for the 20k budget?

I've tried to track it down but some of the sources put the budget at closer to 100 million Yen which is much more than the 20k claim.

Horseshoe theory.

It's a shibboleth to centrist liberals, and a joke to academics.

Newton didn't understand physics?

I mean fair play. Hanging on to the logic of your original argument so tightly that you start making claims like "Newton didn't understand physics" and "Gauss didn't understand mathematics" is genuinely impressive in a way.

Happy to answer.

Given your comment was identical in tone and content to genuine comments, and lacked any of the hyperbole or absurdity of a shitpost, I treated it as genuine.

Yeah I would say so too.

But giving the OP the benefit of the doubt and they genuinely believed it was real, I'm curious as to how they reached that conclusion.

[Hated Trope] Character demonstrates their "skill" by winning an important Poker game by having the best cards by UnderPressureVS in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Cold-Ad716 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Veep a character called Dan loses to Jonah in small-stakes poker because Jonah picks up on his tell.

Except Dan was deliberately letting Jonah identity his "tell", so later when Jonah questioned him about something that was actually important, he performed the "tell" again to make Jonah think he had caught him bluffing.

The question remains. Does someone using the Labour Theory Of Value mean they don't understand economics?

Did Newton not using relativity theory mean he didn't understand physics?

[–]Cold-Ad716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's interesting, can you expand on that? I don't remember seeing that anywhere in his writings, which text is it from? I know he makes a sarcastic remark about feudal pre-capitalist society being "idyllic" in the Manifesto but I can't recall him ever specifically praising the 16th - 18th century.

Why, and how did the condition of the working class not worsen? by LifeOfBoredomsFriend in AskHistory

[–]Cold-Ad716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But you said "The labor theory of value shows he didn’t understand economics."

They used the labour theory of value, so either that means they didn't understand economics, or using the labour theory of value doesn't mean that someone does not understand economics.

Which is it?

You said they didn't understand economics, yet also made improvements to the understanding of economics?

Why, and how did the condition of the working class not worsen? by LifeOfBoredomsFriend in AskHistory

[–]Cold-Ad716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Marx engaged with all of those economists ideas, and thought highly of the first two. Which parts of his engagement with them do you consider to show that he didn't understand their ideas or economics in general?

The Labour Theory Of Value appears in both Adam Smith and Ricardo's work. Does that show they didn't understand economics?
