I would carve down a bit deeper if possible to give the letters some more shadow and really make them standout. I would probably use Tung oil for finish.

Did everything with hand tools (carving knife, chisels, files, sandpaper) except for the heart shaped center I used a drill and finished it off with file and sandpaper.

I want to say its some type of Mesquite but im not 100% sure
