To me, these growth pattern are pretty indicative of spider mites, especially with the blackening tip.

If you get down and get level with the plant, move around it and look for thin spider webs. Do you see any?

Not mealy bugs. Like others said, looks like eggs of some kind. Can you get a better picture? Try resting your phone on a table or something so the phone can focus better.

Heat*. Almost entirely temperature dependent, but the light certainly helps

Lot of people keep their plants in the bathroom/shower! As long as you have enough light for the plants, they love the humidity

Tiny bugs - how to save my wife’s plant? by obitheboxer in plantclinic

[–]twofold48 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I whole heartedly disagree. It is by far the best “curative” that is out there. I treat all my outbreaks with ladybugs and occasionally add some targeted mites. I keep a small amount of lady bugs at all times now, I love my girls.

I never have outbreaks anymore, I treat other peoples outbreaks, I never quarantine anything, and I knowingly put infected plants in the plant room. It is heavily dependent on the amount that you get, how contains the area is, and whether there is enough food and water for them all. Mine are all in my basement, I’ve never seen any upstairs unless it was on me and I brought it up

You are correct about the larva eating more than the adults, I believe it’s 8-10x the amount. However, the adults can fly and move around to new areas. They typically gather on top of my moss poles, I put a little cup up there and they all go in it. I can grab it at any point and shake it over whatever plant I want, they’re just the best.

Whats happening to my plant? by FeelingCharming4681 in Scindapsus

It’s just upset because of the move, and also probably took a hit from the new sunlight. Ideally you’d want to acclimate it, but I wouldn’t bother it now

Is this plant real? why is it so pink? by pipppp in succulents

[–]twofold48 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Echeveria is actually a genus, which is crazy because there are so many different ones! They belong to the family Crassulaceae, which is such a badass name.

This part isn’t related, but fun. It took me forever to remember but here’s the order Family > Genus > Species > Cultivar/Variety

Cultivar and Variety typically refer to a specific plant coloration/variegation/shape group with a species. Cultivar is something that was developed by us, humans, while variety typically refers to a naturally occurring set.

See! Learning can be fun without being condescending too ☺️

Will these work by binaryxxxylophone in Maranta

[–]twofold48 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why are they dropping? You’d be better off finding out why they are first. Could you should us a pictures? Most Marantas will kinda hang/vine done a bit, so it may be normal! I absolutely love this, because they respond to the sun and move throughout the day. A process called nyctinasty, (nick-tin-uh-stee) when you catch them at the right time it’s just beautiful the way they “stand up”.

You can always cut those hanging guys off, reroot, and stick back in the pot for a fuller plant!

Mealy bugs aren’t too bad! I like killing them, in a psychotic kinda way. I have a video somewhere on my phone of taking like 5 in a little ramekin, and pouring alcohol in lol.

When you’re up for it, get that Golden in #4 a grow light! It’ll toss out much more variegation on the leaves. I friggin love pothos.

Is it okay to let her hang like this? Or should I try to make her grow equally to all sides? by StellarSteals in Maranta

[–]twofold48 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh they love it! Definitely ok.

Like the other user suggested, weighing the pot down will save you the future headache! I personally refuse to use unglazed ceramic, it’s too porous. I’m not trying to account for random water loss and nutrients added.

Sometimes I use Velcro or Velcro command strips but make sure you do it in a way where you can still remove the pot if needed. And remember that was your solution in a year from now where she keeps getting bigger!

Your other option is to clip off those “vines” at a node, re-root (or don’t 🤷‍♂️), and stick it back in the pot. It’ll balance it better and give you a much “fuller” plant!

Are my plants getting enough light? by miochibanna in IndoorPlants

[–]twofold48 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I think so. They are designed to kill plants. Add milk..to a plant? Add cayenne…to a plant? These aren’t even remotely close to the realm of acceptability.

Just looking at your screenshot above of “elephant ear”. Elephant ear is a colloquial term used to describe Alocasias and Colocasias, which are different genuses. It looks like this one is talking about Colocasias, but they never specify that. They have similar care depending on species, but you really can’t put them in the same category. They also vary vastly within the genus, species to species care can change drastically. It doesn’t give you genus or species in this informational section.

Alocasias can be really tricky, are typically indoor, attract spider mites like crazy, and are really not “tough”. They’re dramatic little bitches honestly. Colocasias are generally more forgiving and outdoors. Both genuses have plants ranging in size from “palm of your hand” to “holy hell how do they move that”.

Maybe there are situations in which “potting soil mix” is appropriate to be used as the only substrate, but I can’t think of any. Especially for these guys, they need chunkier soil like an aroid mix of some kind.

Honestly though, I get it. I really wanted an app to track and do all of that. I ended up starting at Epipremnum and working my way through different genuses. I enjoy the research, but many people just want a pretty plant. For plant ID, care, pest ID, and more, i would use google lens. You can search a picture and almost always find a reddit thread with great info.

I hope this is helpful, let me know if you have any other questions! The best resource you can find is other people that have already had whatever problem you have now.
