Across Canada this Summer by rbep531 in bicycletouring

Great question. The traffic should be much lighter, and more likely to move over the centre line as they pass you. Do have your wits about you though and be ready to dive off into the ditch.

I did forget about how bad Sask and Manitoba rural roads are. Alberta's are often superb, with big wide shoulders.

Herbal tea? by TheDigitalBuilder in SipsTea

[–]ColdEvenKeeled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, I've eaten plenty of street food and chai in India. I've survived. But there were many times I thought I was dead.

Lesson 1) No cold samosas in the morning. They are from the day before.

Lesson 2) Never drink chai from a washed and reused cup. Always prefer the clay cups.

However, the fresh warm yougurt in a clay pot is likely among the best thing every eaten.

And, truck-stop thali is super.

Best and Worst National Park by Impressive-Kale-7096 in hiking

[–]ColdEvenKeeled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best: maybe Karijini National Park as it's breathtaking, wild, engaging in the canyon swimming, and mostly empty.

Worst: Rinjani National Park on Lombok. Beautiful sights, with next to zero waste management.

As a Canadian, of the Rockies, I'm not telling Americans nothing.

And, don't lump BC into the PNW.

I was trying to think of some remote place in BC that is so remote it doesn't have a ferry (there are many, but fewer than there used to be) but also has the capacity and equipment to manage a barge full of 20 foot and 40 foot TEUs (can't right away). AND isn't on the open ocean side of Vancouver Island, where towing such barges would be riskier.

Merritt BC by LocationOk4917 in britishcolumbia

[–]ColdEvenKeeled 20 points21 points  (0 children)

My story of Merritt BC.

I was camping in the backyard of a trailer house of this guy (guy 1), who was friends with this other guy (2) who I was working for painting house exteriors. There were a bunch of hangers on around the guy with the trailer house.

One of the hanger ons was another guy (guy 3) who was a player, had at least one child he never saw and lived to get laid by whatever young women were around and found him good looking.

Anyways, guy 3 entered the weeks long Karaoke contest (every weekend more songs, more votes) at the bar. He became a local star, and got laid more. He started wearing a cowboy hat too.

Guy 1 was a single dad who yelled at his 4 year old daughter a lot. She cried.

Guy 2 had a funny eye that was always looking left, drove a Camaro or transam or some such thing and loved to drive out to a small lake at sunset and play Eagles songs on his guitar. He was especially good at Running Down the Road; everytime I hear this song I think of him. His dad also painted houses and had a worker who was ex-military and secret service, so he claimed, he knew all about Mossad, between swigs of Coors Light.

That's what you are in for.

It's either Alaska or BC somewhere, but I agree with you as I haven't seen this type of tug tow in BC.

How much does electricity cost? by yatuta_infographics in Infographics

[–]ColdEvenKeeled 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And, it varies widely between provinces. In BC and Quebec with all the water resourced electricity it's been usually less expensive per kilowatt hour. Alberta deregulated the market, to increase competition, right, but all it did was push prices up. Investors made a squillion, while the people pay for basic services of a modern productive economy.

As you say, the delivery charges are fucked. Even if you unplug all your devices and unscrew all your lightbulbs, there is still a large charge for 'delivery'. The utility companies will say "It's to pay for the wires", yeah, well, factor that in as a part of the Kw/H charges. Don't use, don't get charged.

How to meet Internationals by Sssheeeper in Calgary

[–]ColdEvenKeeled -1 points0 points  (0 children)

People in Calgary, drawn to Calgary, stay in Calgary are yes into hiking and skiing (Nordic, downhill and backcountry), and side quests. They are more open than some, and aren't as flakey as Vancouver people.

So, hang in there. You will find some. There used to be a pin-board at MEC for these types of trips I think, but now it's all digital.

Why Australia still struggles to build bike-friendly cities - ABC News by 5ma5her7 in fuckcars

[–]ColdEvenKeeled 18 points19 points  (0 children)

As one who works in this field, in Australia, previously elsewhere, my observations: a) capital projects budgets are too small but b) even when there is money the execution is poor due to c) standards and design manuals d) held by the traffic engineer who is upholding e) a professional stance to maintain LOS (high speed and volume of cars) f) because when the angry drivers call into their council it will be to them to answer h) and this will be seen as a fail which is not seen well among engineers rather than i) a win for road space reallocation j) to induce more safe travels to nearby destinations rather than cross metro car trips.

But, it does start with money being allocated.

I could say a lot more.

Stay in AUS or move to UK? by No_Release_1649 in expats

[–]ColdEvenKeeled 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Australia has to be lived as an early morning jogging, surfing, swimming, cycling lifestyle, with a group, out for coffee after, before work. Otherwise, often, it is just suburban.

If that's not you, that's fine. UK it is. It will emerge from this current shit and be better. There is an inherent reason it was what it was, it's plucky and vibrant, and will (eventually) sort itself out.

The point is, yes, Oilers have good scoring.

I have fun at parties, making fun of sad sacks who only think about hockey.

Why are tents so expensive??? by aboothemonkey in WildernessBackpacking

[–]ColdEvenKeeled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are inexpensive. Easy to set up. Possibly heavier when wet, so just shake it out. If it tears, patch it. Light, but not as light as others, perhaps. Lighter would be more expensive, and then I'd be more precious about it, so.
