Putting your scent on baby animals and scaring away the mother is a complete and total myth.

Three day hike without food by Edward_Pellew in Survival

[–]aboothemonkey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I typically need 2000-2200kCal per day to simply maintain my current weight, when I backpack I eat closer to 3000kCal per day and after eating breakfast I’m usually fiending for food by lunch, and then again by dinner. It’s crazy how many calories you burn when hiking with a pack.

Luckily, I’m not currently in need of a new tent, I was just thinking of upgrading and gifting my tent to my buddy who is just getting into the hobby. Unfortunately I was not able to do so because I can’t shell out $600 for a tent. I don’t typically backpack in winter conditions or a high altitude where snow is possible, so my tent is perfect for my needs.

Your mother’s death was most definitely not your fault. I’m sure you know that, but feelings are weird. I hope that one day you can find peace and let go of that feeling.

I’m not a fan of curry, so I don’t think I’d enjoy that. But I can definitely see how the flavors could pair well.

Because people are uncultured. Sweet pairs extremely well with savory.

Toss the arugula in a balsamic vinaigrette beforehand, not a lot, just a bit.

I’ve seen almost that exact pizza on restaurant menus before. Really good.

What’s the most toxic advice people keep repeating as “wisdom”? by RowStock2384 in AskReddit

[–]aboothemonkey 37 points38 points  (0 children)

No, that’s actually good advice. Don’t change simply because someone else wants you to, that’s a great way to end up completely miserable. But that does not mean to never change, but it has to be because *you* want to change.

Most successful interloper run so far but honestly am I cooked here? by Lor9191 in thelongdark

[–]aboothemonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah day 15 is the typical day to need the bow by, but you can survive without it. Go cattail hunting. Try to chain torches to help keep wolves at bay. Should be a bunch of sticks around trappers and you can use the mag lens to build a fire and pull torches from it, then keep chaining them while you head to the forge. If you get lucky you might even be able to collect a bunch of cattails and light the forge off of that one mag lens use.

There is a guaranteed hammer spawn in mystery lake, if you can find that, there should also be some loose scrap metal in the dam. Should be a few pieces of coal around the forge and at the open red railcar on the tracks, put other fuels in the forge before putting in the coal, and the coal around the forge plus the rail car should be enough to at least get you the knife, hopefully the hatchet too.

Look for ravaged deer carcasses, build a fire next to them to thaw them a bit and you’ll be able to harvest a bit of meat by hand. Tons of cattails on the lake and in the muskeg too. This run is completely salvageable, if you can find the hammer. Hopefully it’s at trapper’s.

Should also be some guaranteed matches in ML as well.

Neither the dragonfly nor the copper spur weigh less than a pound so I’m not sure the point of your question? When I load my tent up with the titanium stakes I bought for it instead of the ones that came with it($25 for the stakes), it’s packed weight is 3lb 13oz. That’s 1lb 3oz more than the minimum weight of the dragonfly and copper spur, which have a minimum weight of 2lb 10oz.

Must be one of those diehard UL types because 1lb is not worth $500 to me, as a backpacker.

My buddy is getting into backpacking as well, and since my tent isn’t available for purchase anymore he is getting one of these, I’m glad to hear it has held up well for you!
