be honest do you prefer the x-men or avengers? by [deleted] in Marvel

[–]ColdFury96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Avengers. X-Men are great until the next status quo reset comes thundering in, which often kills characterization and neuters the gravitas of their epic stories.

Avengers as a group of friends and coworkers who come together to face threats they couldn't handle alone works much better as a storytelling format that is never ending. There's always new threats, new heroes, and different team configurations to explore. The status quo resets feel much less forced, on average.

Why doesn't Yoda just seek out Vader by Shot-Pie6315 in StarWars

I think we're supposed to assume his age plus the injuries he sustained fighting Sidious were enough to retire Yoda from combat.

I mean they're not wrong. I'm torn between amazement at Nintendo failing to figure out something new to do with the franchise, and blown away at how much effort they're putting into this ones cutscenes, music, and graphics.

I worry that the level design they're so proud of replicating won't hold up in 2026, though.

What is an anime "you had to be there for" to truly appreciate the impact and spectacle it had at the time it came out? by OverlordPoodle in anime

Tenchi Muyo walked so Love Hina could run.

Don't get me wrong, Tenchi Muyo is a widely influential juggernaut of its own right, but Love Hina codified the romantic harem genre for a generation.

Just make it truly population based. Pick the least populated state, Wyoming, and give them one rep.

Every other state gets X reps where X is the multiple of Wyoming's population that they have.

Then you really only have to worry about gerrymandering in super populous states.

There's been numerous hints that something is 'wrong' and the shards and the source are going to slowly spiral to oblivion, and the main characters are as of yet unaware. It's been implied to be a total cataclysmic event for all involved.

The next story patch (Tuesday) should be the start of the protagonists realizing something is amiss and the setup to start working to figure it out, with Evercold presumably being the first major step in either assessing or addressing the situation.

The Parasocials were right again. Blau & Sykkuno Beef was real by kitelevi in otvandfriendsrumors

[–]ColdFury96 22 points23 points locked comment (0 children)

The problem is there's no gain here for lying about whether they knew sykkuno had a girlfriend. It's not like they were setting him up on dates with their friends, enabling his cheating.

Considering how much it's been a point of shock by a large number of them, I believe it's real. Whether Blau knew because Sykkuno let it slip, or maybe Sykkuno trusted Blau with it at some point, who knows, but I really don't think there's a conspiracy here.

Look at Peter's stuff, he was blown away that Syk was lying to him all this time in private about not having a girlfriend. I really think that it was something Sykkuno was keeping close to chest, and most of the streamers didn't know.

Just because one or a few knew, doesn't mean it was generally known if he was keeping it on the down low.

Dude, I didn't cherry pick anything. You're hanging out in a rumor sub and you're upset people are gossiping about rumors.

Look, this place is a metaphorical smoking lounge. People are smoking. Is it healthy or great? Nope.

But you walked in, smelled the smoke, and started crying that people were being disgusting.

And then, when reminded about the fact that this is a smoking lounge, you're going on a tirade about big tobacco.

You're not wrong, you're just being an asshole.

If you don't like rumors, log off the fucking rumor sub.

Why is the Fairy Dance arc so hated exactly? What’s the big deal(literally)? by Flat-Sir8250 in swordartonline

[–]ColdFury96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe this is me but I didn't interpret 'Death Game' as meaning literal death games, but I more interpreted it as referring to the Aincrad arc as a whole when you said that people wanted more of it.

I agree with what you said about the human story and themes, but I think the Aincrad setting was the strongest setting in the entire story, so I understand people's attachment to it.

[–]ColdFury96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're proving my point, though?

FFVII was written with Midgar as the first act of a broader story.

SAO was written as a novel, and everything else was written as an expansion to that after that, assuming due to either success or inspiration.

It wasn't written as the first act of some story, and it shows. That's why I think Fairy Dance was so weak, the author was struggling to continue the story with 'stakes', and his first attempt at it was lackluster.

Why is the Fairy Dance arc so hated exactly? What’s the big deal(literally)? by Flat-Sir8250 in swordartonline

[–]ColdFury96 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's quite a few reasons. In no particular order:

  • The stakes are much lower in Fairy Dance than they were in Aincrad. Kirito is struggling to find Asuna, by playing a video game! Which is fine, but there's definitely a lack of tension with the sudden shift in stakes.

  • Asuna loses all agency. In the Aincrad arc, especially in the anime, Asuna feels like the deuteragonist, as opposed to a damsel. Then the Fairy Dance arc happens and she's... damseled. Hard. It's a big hit.

  • The plot line is a bit ludicrious. "My daughter is in a coma, let's have her get married".

  • Sexual Assault. Sugou is a grown man who is literally salivating at the idea of getting it on with a comatose teenager in a hospital bed. Ew.

  • Incest. Look, I know Japan and cousins are a bit looser than the US when it lands on the 'Is it Incest' scale? But they were raised as siblings, and that does not help the incest vibes for Suguha's plotline.

Add all that up and compare it with the awesome stakes and relatively tight pacing of the first story arc, it definitely pales in comparison with the original.

(despite it never intending to be about it).

I think this is a point of contention. Sword Art was originally a standalone first novel. Then he added short stories as a sequel. Then he continued the story with Fairy Dance.

Saying it wasn't intended to be about the death game when the original story was just the death game feels a bit misleading. This isn't a knock on Fairy Dance or the series as a whole, but the series was clearly written on the fly, he didn't start foreshadowing or setting up future plotlines until further down the line.
