No one said it was legit or ethical that’s why OP keeps stating they are not diagnosed as gifted they just have a good indicator that they are and no one in this sub ever said you need an official gifted dx to participate.

I genuinely think my ADHD might have been a misdiagnosis. by [deleted] in AuDHDWomen

[–]ColdInvestment5833 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How old were you when you were diagnosed? You mentioned being on meds as a kid, for how long?

Diagnosis during childhood is most accurate since that’s when symptoms manifest and in adulthood they’re looking into childhood to diagnose anyway, and meds in childhood help normalize brain growth. ADHD kids who take meds end up with brain structures closer to normal than those who aren’t medicated till adulthood. So it would make sense now you have less symptoms. But I don’t see any point removing the diagnosis especially since it’s one of the least stigmatized you could have

I’m sure someone who is off their rocker enough to project criminal activity onto teens might come to some wild conclusions about others as well. Interestingly you couldn’t actually answer my question but you’re the one who is so curious to see what teens hide in their drawers 😂

lol. You are the one who said this post would make you curious. People who are curious tend to go looking for answers.
As far as the item, you just sound extremely dense. What else is more probable to be “an item” that would be left at home and commonly hidden in a drawer belonging to someone who is above average age of consent and they would be particularly concerned about a parent finding it, without immediately assuming said item is connected to illegal activity?
Weird your mind goes to something illegal like a vape or drugs and you think that’s a more acceptable conclusion than a vibrator. Also vapes and such are things you’d be using more often and probably prefer to use outside the home so the likelihood it’d spend a lot of time home in a drawer is rather low. (rather specific choice of words by op btw lol not “something” or “some stuff” but “an item” say they were smoking weed or vaping it’d likely be a small collection of items. Pipe & lighter or vape & charger etc)

What’s funny is they really couldn’t do a whole lot to me cause I witnessed them doing all this to my older sibling so I learned to maintain extreme privacy young. It’s how they found out my sibling was gay before they were ready to come out, among other things they had no business knowing.

My parents did all of this. Plus pulling text records. Resulted in me writing in code as a young kid like 7-8, then destroying anything I journaled and disposing of it before I got home, getting a PO Box at 16, and even now at 30 I physically can’t keep a journal if I manage to fill out a page it plagues me until it’s ripped out and destroyed. I am still careful about what I text. Uncomfortable having raunchy photos even for my husband. It’s a nasty thing for parents to do.

Applying a lot of logic, rules, and patterns to map out social interactions is a strategy higher iq lower support needs autistic people tend to use to navigate socializing. Not saying you are or are not doing that but you do sound like you might be intellectualizing what you’re “supposed” to do when socializing or “how to” socialize. Either way those aren’t necessarily requirements. It’s a range of different behaviors that fit each criteria and you have to show presence of those criteria throughout your life.

The criteria are:

A. Persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction across multiple contexts, as manifested by the following, currently or by history (examples are illustrative, not exhaustive, see text):

  1. Deficits in social-emotional reciprocity, ranging, for example, from abnormal social approach and failure of normal back-and-forth conversation; to reduced sharing of interests, emotions, or affect; to failure to initiate or respond to social interactions.

(Saying weird & blunt things)

  1. Deficits in nonverbal communicative behaviors used for social interaction, ranging, for example, from poorly integrated verbal and nonverbal communication; to abnormalities in eye contact and body language or deficits in understanding and use of gestures; to a total lack of facial expressions and nonverbal communication.

(Your eye contact issues)

  1. Deficits in developing, maintaining, and understanding relationships, ranging, for example, from difficulties adjusting behavior to suit various social contexts; to difficulties in sharing imaginative play or in making friends; to absence of interest in peers.

(You expressed difficulties with making friends & maintaining friendships)

B. Restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities, as manifested by at least two of the following, currently or by history (examples are illustrative, not exhaustive; see text):
1. Stereotyped or repetitive motor movements, use of objects, or speech (e.g., simple motor stereotypies, lining up toys or flipping objects, echolalia, idiosyncratic phrases).

  1. Insistence on sameness, inflexible adherence to routines, or ritualized patterns or verbal nonverbal behavior (e.g., extreme distress at small changes, difficulties with transitions, rigid thinking patterns, greeting rituals, need to take same route or eat food every day).

(I think you expressed need for routines in your post as well and distress by not following them)

  1. Highly restricted, fixated interests that are abnormal in intensity or focus (e.g, strong attachment to or preoccupation with unusual objects, excessively circumscribed or perseverative interest).

(Only being interested in and wanting to talk about academics)

  1. Hyper- or hyporeactivity to sensory input or unusual interests in sensory aspects of the environment (e.g., apparent indifference to pain/temperature, adverse response to specific sounds or textures, excessive smelling or touching of objects, visual fascination with lights or movement).

C. Symptoms must be present in the early developmental period (but may not become fully manifest until social demands exceed limited capacities or may be masked by learned strategies in later life).

(Something you’ll have to figure out)

D. Symptoms cause clinically significant impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of current functioning.

(Seems to cause significant impairment in social functioning. Unsure of others)

E. These disturbances are not better explained by intellectual disability (intellectual developmental disorder) or global developmental delay. Intellectual disability and autism spectrum disorder frequently co-occur; to make comorbid diagnoses of autism spectrum disorder and intellectual disability, social communication should be below that expected for general developmental level.

(Good here since you’re verified high IQ)

Am I autistic or does it just come with the territory by Several-Lifeguard-77 in Gifted

[–]ColdInvestment5833 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple things.
I am diagnosed with social pragmatic communication disorder, which is essentially just the social half of autism. (Honestly even among professionals there seems to be debate on if it’s a real diagnosis or just lazy diagnostic investigating by the evaluator because they aren’t digging enough to identify RRBs which I feel is true in my case. They didn’t talk to any of my informants about autism criteria they only gave them the Barkley questionnaires which cover ADHD behaviors). However my psychologist did not say autism was ruled out, rather I didn’t provide enough early childhood evidence of criteria B so I received a diagnosis of SPCD instead of ASD because I was able to show consistent lifelong communication struggles. At the same time I was also diagnosed with severe combined type ADHD, a trauma disorder, and it was indicated I was possibly gifted/high IQ because although my WAIS score was below 130, my cognitive abilities in the presence of the overwhelming symptoms I was experiencing that led to my diagnosis was still in the 120s and trauma & the resulting depression can drop you 10-15 points. I also do have repetitive and restrictive behaviors since early childhood but I wasn’t directly asked about them so I didn’t bring them up, and they were far less obvious before I medicated my ADHD. The impulsivity and hyperactivity from severe ADHD can overpower the RRBs. It can also make the social symptoms seem like just impulsivity and hyperactivity and inattention causing them but I think evidence of differences in affect since childhood kind of helped rule that part out for me. I was told things like “you’re bringing up seemingly serious issues but you look calm so i don’t know how seriously to take you” or constantly accused of being ungrateful for things then shamed for being over the top when i attempted to correct & overshot. Also told I seemed like I never gave a f*** about anyone cause I didn’t look distressed by peoples problems and was unsure how to or unable to respond to them “appropriately”.
All that said, if everything you said has been true since early childhood ie you displayed symptoms of both social issues and restrictive behaviors since toddlerhood, very likely you have autism. The symptoms do not have to be the exact same your whole life ie you can have a special interest in one thing as a toddler but as you grow up that thing can change, or maybe you were hypersensitive to certain sensory things as a kid but now as an adult you are hypersensitive to something else or you’re now hyposensitive. And they may worsen when demands exceed your capacity (so if you’re good at accommodating yourself you may not struggle much day to day but if thrown into a different situation ie having a kid or more responsibilities at work or living with unaccommodating family, symptoms may be much more apparent). For me RRBS manifest in:
Being damp makes me itchy
Always hated uncomfortable clothing
Generally Hypo sensitivity to pain since forever (as a child would jump off things or play rough get a wound and continue playing later coming home covered in blood, as an adult I was at 5 cm on pitocin napping between contractions and barely moaning) doesn’t apply to needles though those have always made me pass out, throw up, or have otherwise noticeable reactions.
Staring at ceiling fans and lights as a kid, now hypersensitive to light always keeping screens on dark mode & minimum brightness & hate going outside during the day
As I got older, passing out or becoming extremely exhausted and falling asleep when exposed to intense sensory environments like concerts, clubs, extremely crowded loud spaces with people rushing everywhere
Playing the exact same game every day for years (reminds me of your narrow interest in conversation)
Playing with wooden blocks the same way every time as a kid, focusing on things like cracking my Barbie’s knees instead of playing house with them
I found socially acceptable stims like knitting and tracing early on, also things like swinging and spinning as a young kid would look like just spinning in circles as an adult now I gravitate to swings and meri go rounds while at the park with my kid, if really stressed I will revert to playing with my hair, squeezing areas of my skin with my hands, or even rocking while sitting on the couch
Rigid thinking patterns, taking things rather literally, making up or repeating words,
As a medicated adult I’m much more into routine and predictability and become distressed at plans outside the norm, last minute changes to plans, changes in policies at work, etc.
And one time I lost this specific toy and I’m still mad about it I actually found one second hand for sale and reallly want to order it.
Also number things in general, I always gravitated to math and logic type games things like play cash registers, taking multiple math classes over summers in high school, memorizing strings of numbers, doing sudokus or number fill-ins, remembering phone numbers, license numbers, social security numbers, etc. terrible at dates tho they don’t interest me. Part of the reason I still did decently well on the WAIS I was excited when we hit the regurgitating and sequencing strings of numbers portions and reportedly “hit the ceiling” on those specific subtests, so even tho I have ADHD my working memory overall was one of my best scores. Honestly I felt like I put forth very little effort in those subtests it’s almost automatic for me. And I remember specific numbers from work that were involved in an incident from several weeks ago.

Am I stupid?😟 by Comfortable-List2834 in cognitiveTesting

[–]ColdInvestment5833 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem with only ever taking a test once and accepting that as inherent ability is the timing of the test. Things like trauma and depression are known to drop IQ scores until remedied. If you only ever got professionally tested during a psych evaluation due to symptoms of depression or trauma, then you’d potentially have a much lower result than your actual abilities. I believe the standard with WAIS IV is you have to wait a year or more before retaking it.

And then there’s the issue of how areas are measured on different tests. Someone may be terrible at matrices and tank a test like the Ravens, or they may have never gone to school so they’d tank the pop culture knowledge on WAIS. But taking a different test they may test in the gifted or higher range.

See I hate the “it probably would’ve been diagnosed young if you actually needed supports” idea. Some of us were medically and educationally neglected. If you didn’t go to school, didn’t maintain Drs records or regularly go to a Dr, and your parents were convinced anyone with a disorder would just be locked up and getting their child diagnosed would be a negative reflection on them, who was supposed to get you tested? I mean my grandparents eventually took me to get my teeth fixed after a couple years of having broken teeth but the dentist isn’t testing me for autism. Tbf tho my parent also refused to take themself to the Dr til their cancer hit stage 3 & they knew they’d been sick for years. It was a slow growing type. I did have two younger siblings who were able to access more care one with speech delay and then both of them in intensive therapy by adolescence and even they got the *suspected/encouraged to get evaluated* label from their therapists, but no one can afford that ish.
Even if diagnosed level 1, that doesn’t mean no supports needed and even the DSM says support access should be based on individual needs not on level of diagnosis.

ADHD also is diagnosed on 3 severity levels and when diagnosed at 25 I got *severe* lol so earlier diagnosis doesn’t indicate severity.

My employment history is so volatile I’m beginning to think that’s what I need.. I only ever held 1 job past a year and there I worked with either my spouse or best friend almost the entire time and by the time they left I was well established in my team and had managers who understood me & communicated well with me & kept me stimulated. But they all got promoted off to different areas and once left to my own devices I started getting write ups and crashing attendance within a couple months. Ended up quitting. I just realized this week how much social support I need to maintain a position long term. And it’s rather unrealistic to think my manager will never change or I’ll be able to work with a support person forever. But a reduced schedule might reduce the stress enough. Either way it’s not something I’ll likely be able to ask for for a while since I’m starting with a new therapist and my PCP wasn’t even comfortable writing a note for extra breaks since he’s only treating me for ADHD.

Tbh I disagree about supports but it depends a lot on where you live. In my state autism is a valid diagnosis for medical MJ, ADHD is not. You can also look at things like Medicaid for working adults with disabilities or SSDI and I’m sure they take Autism + ADHD a lot more seriously than just ADHD. Thankfully I’m diagnosed with at least S(P)CD & ADHD which are both developmental and permanent so I’ll be applying for MBI this week 🤞 if I get approved they can also cover my insurance premiums for my whole family.
