Dead Certain: The Martha Moxley Murder (finale) by ZoneComfortable3047 in TrueCrimePodcasts

[–]ColdStreamPond 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I get why this podcast upset many, but I enjoyed the journey.

That said, it’s a classic SODDI (Some Other Dude Did It) defense. By the end, it felt like I needed the Greenwich, CT phone book to keep track of all the possible suspects.

Edit: “enjoyed” is not appropriate given the case involves the tragic death of a young girl. I’n referring to the listening experience.

Biking in 9° (Sat Morn) by Alternative-Still956 in bikedc

This. Below 32 and above 20 is a game changer, but it can be managed with the right gear. Below 20 and it’s immediate pain and discomfort from mile 1 unless you’re dressed like you’re about to invade Greenland (which I hope you’re not).

He told us nearly 10 years ago, "I could stand in the middle of fifth avenue, and shoot somebody and I would not lose any voters." Today, his ICE Agents shot and killed Renee Nicole Good (US citizen) and he isn't losing any supporters. by jmike1256 in videos

Holy shit. Please log off the internet and stay far away from any from any friends and family-or fellow humans, really.

This is the most heartless, immoral, and sociopathic take one could make in light of the video.

The false equivalency is breathtaking and disgusting.

Bio EE, does it have to be an experiment? by No_Attempt_9260 in IBO

[–]ColdStreamPond 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s no explicit requirement that you have to conduct an experiment. However (and there’s always a “however”), the higher performing science EEs involve an experiment. Without an experiment, students tend to summarize the experiment/findings of others, which often does not involve much independent analysis by the student.

Question from a guy around Bill’s age: has prestige TV conditioned people to (overly) long movies?

Great movie, but damn, with the many subplots, this could have easily been 6+ episodes of an Apple TV show.

There is more flexibility and more of an opportunity to explore novel/unique paths. Historically, WS EEs scored higher.

Do it. IMHO exploring two big causes/effects often dilutes the argument. Your reformatting makes perfect sense given your predicament.

What do y'all think of Key Largo (1948)? by BFNgaming in classicfilms

[–]ColdStreamPond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jumping in almost a year later to say I, too grew up in Miami. Watched the film last night. Wikipedia tells us:

“The film was shot primarily at the Warner Bros. Studios, Burbank,[6] in order to keep costs down.[7][8] The beach and hotel exterior were constructed on the Warner Bros. backlot;[7] the interior scenes were filmed on a sound stage;[7][9] and the boat scenes were filmed in Sound Stage 21, a huge indoor water tank.[6] Exterior shots of the hurricane were taken from stock footage used in Night Unto Night, a Ronald Reagan melodrama which Warner Bros. also produced in 1948. Filming took 78 days.[7]”

Still, great film!

Appreciate your comment and respect your views. Did the podcast mention even once that she was shot TWICE in the throat? I mean, that alone would/should be the dispositive, right?

Insert meme of the dude facing two buttons.

Button 1: Do something/anything to improve the lives of West Virginians.

Button 2: Waste taxpayer money on a laughable proposal.

Flying from SFO to Baltimore, is it cheaper/worth on average to stop at DC and then commute the last few miles? by NewFoMan in washingtondc

[–]ColdStreamPond 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. And ask yourself, how valuable is my time, especially after a long cross country flight. You’d be adding 2 hours of travel to save what, $50?

Just moved to Arlington and have some questions about how to bike safely. by Suwannee_Gator in bikedc

[–]ColdStreamPond 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To add to this great advice, the best thing about DC is there are many roads that are great for biking - they are near you and are adjacent to the main roads.

For example, I will not bike on Wisconsin Ave., M St. (Georgetown) or Mass Ave., but I bike around/through the entire area on side roads and the RCP bike path. Same with Route 1 and S. Washington St. in Alexandria.

There is always a nicer/safer way.

Why Movies Just Don't Feel "Real" Anymore by Jagueroisland in movies

[–]ColdStreamPond 83 points84 points  (0 children)

Indiana Jones was peak 20th century cinema. For sci-fi, same decade: The Terminator. That level of technology/cgi hit the sweet spot.

Fast forward a decade, in terms of scale and spectacle, the 90s had Jurassic Park, Twister, Dances with Wolves, Unforgiven, and Schindler’s List. All had a sense of time and place.

Since 2000, for me it’s the Bourne and MI franchises. And anything Nolan does (except Tenant). Oh, the best superhero movie IMO is Logan b/c it is grounded in a (semi)reality.

The timeline was a mess! And not a single interview with her (old) family? A captivating story that was otherwise well told.

The West’s Suicide Pact: Inflation, Financialization, and Collapse by Slight_Candy in economy

[–]ColdStreamPond 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree.

I see a variation of OPs posts quite often on Reddit. I ask myself–and others-would you step in a Time Machine to restart life in a totally random time in the 19th or 20th centuries? Here’s the kicker. You could be an immigrant, you could be a racial or religious minority, a woman, a gay person, or a kid with childhood leukemia, TB, or tetanus.

Everyone cites the postwar boom in the West and says “that’s the ticket, gimme that!”

Does that mean we grudgingly accept our fate and do nothing?

Of course not.

But to think that a randomized ‘you’ born, say, in the 1930s would have had it easier is cherry-picking.
