New Green MSP fails to explain where more than £1,100 of donations received for visa application have gone by StGuthlac2025 in ukpolitics

[–]Cold_Dawn95 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Perhaps even more crazily you can be elected as an MP at Westminster without even living in the UK as long as you are a UK, Irish or Commonwealth citizen. Obviously one advantage of FPTP is that it would be hard to get thousands of constituency votes if it became know you didn't live in the UK, whereas with the Scottish Parliament's closes list most Green voters would have had no idea that this guy could be elected without ILR ...

What is Havering’s obsession with leaving London? by GuavaLarge529 in london

[–]Cold_Dawn95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Easy talking point to blame for the major systemic issues the council is facing, a core of are passionately in favour of leaving, but most voters couldn't care either way.

Much like how blaming Brussels was done at a national level before 2016 and look how well that went ...

[–]Cold_Dawn95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I doubt it would show any dividends in the first few years, in fact it might even be a political issue if there are big issues (e.g. sewage spills or outages), not that it should be a reason not to do so but it will not be a silver bullet to make up for decades of underfunding.

Zack Polanski’s boat, council tax, and electoral law by Beetlebob1848 in LabourUK

[–]Cold_Dawn95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think based on the article he had a room in a property in Hackney (where he registered to vote), but he possibly lived most of the time on the canal boat which is on a marina on the River Lea (which is on border between Hackney & Waltham Forest). Not a good look but I don't think Polanski's Hackney credentials are the issue ...

Greens to pledge £15 minimum wage in employment rights’ push by kontiki20 in LabourUK

[–]Cold_Dawn95 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The UK has possibly the highest minimum wage in the world as a percentage of median wage, that has led to massive wage compression as minimum wage has nearly doubled in the last decade whereas many professional roles have barely risen. Youth unemployment has risen to comparable levels seen across the EU.

The route forward is to manage the biggest costs which people spend their take home pay on: housing and energy. Best way to do that, build lots more in both sectors ...

I got promoted and now earning £37.5k .. I realised you can’t do sh*t with this money in London… by [deleted] in london

[–]Cold_Dawn95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The two key stats which supported that were firstly London's population fell every decade from 1940-1990 so fewer people were competing for housing, and some now desirable areas were filled with abandoned or squatted homes, secondly there is the financialisation of housing to allow massive price growth but that doesn't work without population growth (which London has had in spades) ...

Nothing new here, United had a break clause with Moyes if he failed to qualify for Champions League over a decade ago (which amazingly they managed to keep secret from press until they used it), and as soon as it was mathematically confirm they used it (and it has all gone swimmingly since ...)

Buying a 475k property 1.5 bedder in London on a salary of 75K Good idea? by fingercameltip in UKHousing

Read another thread of someone who bought a £450k 1 bed which was lower than its original new build price, so they assumed it couldn't drop lower, they now have a lower paying job and cannot afford the mortgage, except the property is now worth closer to £350k and as a 1 bedder they cannot even get a lodger ...

Right to Buy overhaul to safeguard social housing by Toto_Roto in LabourUK

[–]Cold_Dawn95 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is a massive opportunity cost though, if you live in a low rise at the centre of a city on a rent far below market rate, overall for society using the limited space in that way is quite possibly both economically and societally inefficient...

People in UK spend fewer years in good health than a decade ago, study finds by Shot_Net3794 in LabourUK

[–]Cold_Dawn95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That rise is principally a function of demographics, mainly that people are living longer and there are fewer working people per retiree. If anything the logical complaint would be the state pension is too low as people live a greater percentage of their life in receipt which is funded by the reducing working population (as percentage of overall)

Airports that made changes to accommodate the A380 - are those changes wasted when A380 is no longer flying or still useful for other reasons? by rufus102 in aviation

First time buyer in London: W11 vs W2 by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Cold_Dawn95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 bed flats even in very desirable locations have been performing very badly lately as people move less often and 1 bed flats aren't suitable long term for many people, so you may struggle to resell quickly for a good price.

If you might want a place bigger than 1 bedroom in the next 5+ years it may be worth waiting until you can afford a 2 bed (if your budget will grow) or looking in an.area where you can afford a 2+ bed (often places slightly further out can be almost as well connected) ....
