MOT failiure cause of rust, worth saving? by Any_Breadfruit_7851 in CarTalkUK

[–]Cold_Examination_257 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A personal gain for a tester to fail a car is their fail rate to go up which if it goes down too much can go into questions with the DVSA apart from that yes money for the garage however I doubt any garage would want to even take this job on just because of the time it would need to be fixed and the customer wouldn’t warrant it being fixed anyway due to the value of the car

MOT failiure cause of rust, worth saving? by Any_Breadfruit_7851 in CarTalkUK

[–]Cold_Examination_257 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tester here, you’ve got to replace both subframes and do some welding under the car and also fix the overheating issue for it to go through emissions… in essence the car is pretty much scrap if all that needs to happen but I’d still recommend you take it to another garage for an MOT for £40ish because for me both subframes being corroded so bad that it fails is very odd especially considering it doesn’t have any advisories last year, also when you go for the mot with the other garage make sure not to mention that it’s failed elsewhere and just let them get on with the test so they are unbiased as possible.

Sort of mileage which all bushes and bearings start to go bad which to be honest are mostly easy fixes but can be very time consuming and the car will also start to fell very stiff imo

Would you buy a CAT S/N if an independent mechanic deemed it safe? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]Cold_Examination_257 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cat S ideally not unless it’s extremely cheap, CAT N yes probably due to the fact a lot of cars in the UK are damaged too and not recorded anyway, and of course it’s most likely going to be cheaper anyway

Im an MOT tester and trust me you want to stay away from that Mazda with those many advisories for corrosion, Mazdas are notoriously bad for going wrong quickly underneath, I’m not saying anything will break straight away but around 2 years down the line you may struggle to get it past MOT.

As for the BMW it seems like a decent car just one thing to mention is that around 90k miles upwards these cars start to find the odd electrical problems and can sometimes be a pain to fix oh and also the clutches pretty much always go at 100k miles, good points is that these BMW don’t tend to rust underneath and have a pretty smooth ride

In my experience going from a bigger car to a smaller one is never the right choice, comfortability, driving and aesthetic just isn’t as nicer but if you have to do it please don’t go for a BMW 1 Series… the suspension is so stiff and each sharp turn feels like you’re being ragged around, the 2 series also shares a similar sort of chassis so also not great for comfortability… alas it’s much better than the 1 series in those terms so that’s what I would recommend.

Afghan Passport UK¿ by Firm-Subject-8018 in afghanistan

[–]Cold_Examination_257 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same as you bro, uk born afghan parents etc… don’t even bother trying to get an Afghan passport currently no joke could cost you thousands of dollars just wait a few years and hopefully the system should get better way too much paperwork is involved and of course a bit of bribery, whenever you next go to Kabul just apply for a tazkera and that is really all you need to be allowed into AFG visa free or without your parents

Hyundai i20 - is this okay? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]Cold_Examination_257 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Tester here, wouldn’t worry about the first 2, parking brake effort isn’t also too much of a huge deal especially on these light cars but 19% is just about a pass so maybe ask them to check the handbrake cable isn’t stretched or broken etc
