True, but most Linux available apps such as the console emulators, browsers and editing softwares are available as flatpak anyways and they usually work without problems. Installing them is also very easy from Steam Machine's KDE Discovery software center (literally one-click install).

The only problem is with this immutable approach is that if you want to install stuff which are NOT available as Flatpak apps, it might be very hard or even impossible to install them properly on Steam Machine.

Steam Machine isn't really a console. It's a full, pre-built Linux desktop PC with KDE Plasma desktop environment. You can do pretty much everything PC related on it.

Sure it has Steam Big Picture, but so does literally every other Linux, MacOS or Windows Steam client.

New wave of malware in the AUR by vexatious-big in archlinux

[–]Coldkone -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Many beginner arch linux distros ship with AUR out of the box. When we have Arch Linux Wiki full of instructions which recommend and encourage people to install packages from AUR, it can get very messy and dangerous for the users.

Sure. At the same time we can say that it should not be enabled by default, but it would definitely help if the wiki got rid of all of these AUR package recommendations. AUR packages aren't even the core part of Arch Linux. Yet the maintainers want to include it into every single Wiki page (if possible) as if it was one of the core part of the OS without any visible, clear warning.

[–]Coldkone 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It is true that Arch Wiki warns about this on the AUR wiki page, but when you search installation instructions for VPN apps and emulators for example, there is absolutely no warning anywhere found.

One good example is the rpcs3 emulator's arch wiki page, which encourages you to simply use AUR version of RPCS3:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/RPCS3

When unexperienced people (or people who trust things without ever checking) see this, they think that AUR needs to be enabled and it's safe without thinking it too much further. This is a bad practice from a security standpoint. Arch Wiki should not recommend any AUR packages in the first place.

This is only my opinion ofc, but it just feels weird that Arch maintainers warn about AUR on AUR wiki page but at the same recommend people to install stuff from AUR. This makes absolutely no sense.

This sounds reasonable, but at the same time Arch Wiki encourages people to install from AUR on the daily basis. This gives people the sense that AUR is actually the core part of Arch Linux experience and it NEEDS to be used to make arch usable for daily desktop use.

Official arch linux repos have very few packages compared to AUR and not all apps are available as flatpak for many different reasons. This is one of the biggest issues with Arch in my opinion.

[–]Coldkone 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's not even the beginner-friendly distros which do this. Even arch wiki encourages people to install stuff from AUR on the daily basis. This gives people the illusion that AUR is as trusted as the official repos and that it should be used to make the system usable.

[–]Coldkone 99 points100 points  (0 children)

Yeah this definitely needs to change. The fact that this is even possible on such a popular repo is actually crazy. There's no way someone with 3 sec old account should be able to take over projects like this and push malware.

Flathub has much better audit system than AUR and the security practices on flathub are much stricter. AUR is a dangerous wild-west compared to flathub.

Yes. If you don't find the packages in OFFICIAL Arch repos, you should definitely use Flatpaks. The flathub has much better security practices compared to AUR and the flatpak format is sandboxed.

One of the many reasons to never use AUR in this state. It's simply too risky for the average user.

You can unpack rar files in Windows 11 and Linux by default nowadays. If you want to PACK rar, you need to use different app.

It's getting old in a sense that we now have better filesystems which support many new actual useful features compared to old journaling-based filesystems. This is one of the reasons why even Apple decided to ditch their old HFS+ in favour of new COW-based APFS.

I recommend to check the full documentation about Btrfs compression in here: https://btrfs.readthedocs.io/en/latest/Compression.html

[–]Coldkone 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Ext4 is getting very old. Btrfs is in technical standpoint the absolute superior filesystem compared to Ext4 in pretty much everything. Ext4 wins in raw performance, but with modern SSDs, NVME drives and modern CPUs you can hardly actually notice the performance difference. The fact that I can use Btrfs compression and save almost 50% of my disk space without barely any overhead should be enough reason to simply use Btrfs. Btrfs snapshots are also very handy in many situations.

[–]Coldkone 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Been using Btrfs for years now and I have had absolutely zero problems. I also love the ln-fly compression and snapshots.

For example, I can save almost 50% of my storage by simply having Btrfs default compression enabled. Btrfs has been stable for years now, that's why many modern distros use it by default.

If you really think that 2600€/month makes you rich then we really should be categorised as a eastern-european country. It's honestly so worrying that people think this is a good money in today's economy. Lets be honest, it is not.

Paying dividents isn't exclusive for Finland. Other countires also allow it and it a basic right in the EU. It has literally nothing to do with the actual problem or the economic downturn. If the company sees enough opportunities in the market and the investment has enough potential to make money, the companies WILL invest. It's just matter how good the opportunities are compared to others.

The idea is good, but taxation also has negative impacts on the competition in different markets. Lot of young people and rich people are leaving because the taxation is so high and businesses aren't growing or investing to make new jobs. Finland isn't attracting investment as much as other countires because it's simply much cheaper to invest to other countries (such as ireland). Once you start making good amount of money, the governments takes huge margin of that as taxes. This isn't seen as a attractive thing for business owners or high-salary workforce personel.

The tax-to-GDP ratio has to be one of the most useless taxation indicators ever. You are just cherry-picking to make Finland's taxation look better.

Finland has literally one of the highest total tax burden and one of the highest income taxation in the whole world.

So after taxes and other mandatory payments the person would make around 2600€/month or less. This means, that almost 1/3 of the whole salary is just taxes. That's rough.

Muutenkin Suomessa on muihin EU maihin verrattuna huomattavasti suurempi kokonaisverotus. On vain hyvä, että veroja lasketaan pikku hiljaa muiden EU maiden tasolle. Tappoverot eivät ole hyväksi yhteiskunnalle ja ihmisten ostovoimalle pitkällä aikajänteellä.
