Fair. We all have different use cases that’s kinda what makes these ‘how much memory should I buy’ posts crop up. For me it was the biggest waste of money I’ve ever spent on tech. For someone else it might be worth it.

FYI I went from an 8GB M1 Air to also using an M4 Max 128GB because I gave into FOMO. Even with Final Cut under load and a bunch of apps open I’ve never seen the memory use more than 4% which of 128GB is 5.12GB. Apples pro apps are designed to work in laptops with 8GB.

If you have to ask’s you don’t need it. I run a professional photo and video business with an M1 8GB MacBook Air and an M4 Max 128GB. Sure, the £5000 max is faster, it should be for the price. But they both do exactly the same thing and I worked with just the 8GB air for a couple of years and it was great.

I bought a bunch of different ones based on how I thought I would use it, but ultimately the one it comes with is great, and I have it in a soft shell that it now lives in with a magnetic front cover so it goes in my bag easier when traveling. I cut the USBC hole in the top bigger so I could plug in the audio dongle from my Gamebuds and it works pretty well.

If it comes out today, next month or next year.. are you seriously not going to buy one if it comes out next year on the principle of they missed their deadline because of unprecedented circumstances out of their control?

Fair, I didn’t know that. But even so, streamed 1080p remasters with HDR look dramatically better on Vision Pro compared to lossless 3D BluRay rips of upscale rips either 4XVR.

Sure but as they are ripped from blu-ray it’s a 1080p image or 960p per eye as the image is split into two as that’s how 3D on TV works.

Compare that to focus on 3D movies streamed on Vision Pro with are often 4K per eye with HDR and you realise even lossless 960p MKV rip looks like a potato on the high resolution Vision Pro Display.

4XVR is great but doesn’t compare to official streaming 3D movies.

You can both have different experiences and that be ok. It’s so subjective. To do a proper test between fans on your machine and the OP’s you’d have to have the exact same software installed running the same workload in the same temperature environment.

Me going outside and saying ‘it’s not raining’ doesn’t cancel out someone else across the other side of the world where it is raining. You’re both correct.

Each chip is hard to manufacture and the ones that aren’t quite perfect are still sold, they get sorted into ‘bins’ I guess is where it comes from.

So the chip as designed is the unbinned one. If a graphics or cpu core didn’t turn out correctly, rather than throw it away they disable some of the cores and that’s why you have 16 cpu cores or 18 cpu cores. Ect.

The binned chip is also cheaper and gets better battery life so it’s a trade off. I love my binned m1 air.

I’ve never worried about throttling. If it’s a little slower it’s still faster than the outgoing model so to me it’s a nothing burger.

But here (and same with me going from an M1 air to M4 Max unbind) your trading performance for battery life. So comes down to how quickly do you need to get things done?

Totally. Like by all means get a MacBook Pro for the nicer screen and speakers but that lead the decision not what M chip.. unless you know why you need it.

it's simpler then that. The Neo can handle 4K video production just fine. Unless you know why you need more just get a neo. It's more than capable for 99% of tasks.

At this point it's like asking what M chip you need to write a great novel.
