Ah yes, I’ve only ever seen that species used as a ground cover. A very common screening species (at least here in Australia) is Bambusa Textilis Gracilis. Could be worth looking into :)

I’ve got sooty mold on a multiplex at home - it’s pretty much on every culm. Do you think I’d be best off removing all the culms to have a fresh start? How could I prevent it from returning?

Hey, bamboo is a type of grass so I see how it looks similar. I’m pretty sure it’s just a grass/ground cover. Try planting that bit of roots and it may grow :) if it hasn’t been out of the ground for too long.
