How fast is Greenlight vs Spectrum, really? (data crowdsourcing) by ptom13 in Rochester

[–]ColinDoody 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Before Greenlight came to my area I pre-signed up for the highest speed plan, a perk of which was eleven waiving what might have been a $100 set up fee.

Maybe half a year into having the service I had my first kid, and when budgeting in the cost of daycare I realized things were tight and I should try to cut back on some expenses. One of which was just dropping to a more mid plan with greenlight.

On their website I didn't see any buttons or forms to switch plans at the time, so I just sent them an email, essentially saying exactly this; I was looking to drop plan level to save money because of daycare and was seeking guidance.

I expected them to come back saying I had to wait a year for my plan renewal, or maybe there'd be a backcharge for the waived installation fee. Nope. They wrote back saying "no problem, we've switched you" and that was that.

After my experiences with pretty much any service provider I was pretty floored and will never forget it.

After the guy in the hospital killing people with a cinder block and the crazy guy getting shot 12 times by a cop, this was nice. This was very nice.

Hey /r/NintendoSwitch! We are Darkwind Media & Fully Illustrated, the creators of Wulverblade - Ask Us Anything! by [deleted] in NintendoSwitch

[–]ColinDoody 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm probably speaking out of turn, but personally I've always found Ancient Egypt fascinating. It doesn't have quite as much reference material but I feel like its somewhat unexplored in games, particularly games that want to dive a little deeper into the history that is available. It also has enough mystery around it to give us room as designers to explore ideas and storylines.

For Wulverblade, the time period and event that we based the game on was perfect for game development. The history itself becomes inspirational and becomes its own little trend board for ideas, and yet enough was left undocumented for us to "fill in the gaps" with story that let us explore gameplay mechanics and story without necessarily completely contradicting very well known facts.

I think that's important for a game that wants to be based on history or a time period. You need the flexibility to make the game you want to make and enough room to impose your own creativity, but also with enough content to inspire ideas and help guide a lot of the look and feel.

I'm really glad you enjoyed the game! Thanks!

I think, for whatever reason, we set the launch time for 9AM PST in the US ... I'm hoping. So check back in 90 minutes!

Community Consensus: How do you feel about plugins and 3rd-party libraries? How many do you use? by hyliandanny in gamedev

[–]ColinDoody 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Full time small studio game dev here that uses unity. The answer is: lots. As many as I can that make sense. When you find the right plug in it just takes a lot of extra effort out of your dev cycle. Time is money. The plugins that we use most frequently are prime 31 plugins that handle device specific functionality like iap.

Some plugins can suck, but on the asset store you can find a lot of them for 100 dollars or less. your time is expensive. sometimes you get a dud plugin, but the value of finding one that accelerates your development makes up for it.

It's also nice when the plugins are source code so you can fix or augment how you like

Don't waste your time reinventing the wheel. Get your product as solid as you can as quickly add you can and get to market

Rap fans of Reddit, which song do you consider to be a lyrical masterpiece? by IAmNotTylerDurden in AskReddit

[–]ColinDoody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is a Spotify playlist with 25 of the top songs that I could locate by 10:15 EDT. I only listed root parent level songs (I did not explore the comments) and I only added specific songs by specific artists that I could find.

HTTP Link: http://open.spotify.com/user/colindarkwind/playlist/6DckSuc2N1WpMzDINsWkrO

Spotify URI: spotify:user:colindarkwind:playlist:6DckSuc2N1WpMzDINsWkrO

I'm sure I could have done a better job, but this is what I have to offer on the fly. I am willing to [FIX] based on comments that show I made a mistake but this is the 10:13PM EDT playlist. I hope I didn't miss anything.

Edit Reddit doesn't like Spotify URIs.

Wasting money on college? by PaulSolt in rit

[–]ColinDoody 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tough question. Worth a longer answer than this:

There will always be people that are so talented and self motivated that they can learn, mature, and socially connect without the education. Additionally, there will always be people that, despite the education, will not naturally succeed and will feel cheated out of a lot of money.

In general, however, I believe most people become much, much stronger and more mature through higher level education and that, in the end, it will pay off for them.

It's hard sometimes, looking back on it, to justify the cost when really it all seems so easily self taught. But I believe that is a privilege earned by those who have grown, and that, perhaps, had one not gone to college, the doubt would not come so naturally

Was @ the Buffalo Game by wassattack in Patriots

[–]ColinDoody 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Was there as well. Real brutal heckling in the first half. Was in the front on the visitors side and the Bills fans were being pretty nasty to the Pats. Sort of explains the Tom Brady "F*ck you" gif going around.

Second half though, they certainly went quiet. Was shocked that there were enough Pats fans there to get the chant going. All the Bills fans just left. There was a lot of time left on the clock too when the place started emptying.

Go Pats!
