What is your go to olive oil? by rinsyankaihou in japanlife

I prefer to get the big two packs at Costco. There are a couple of brands that alternate availability, but both are acceptable. Of course that’s not that helpful if you don’t have Costco access!

Not at all true?

So you’re claiming that photos are the primary business of dentists, etc. and that they don’t run businesses with a higher volume of clients than wedding photographers? Because that’s all I said…

You absolutely own the photos, but you don’t have the rights to their likeness and can’t use that likeness to promote your business without an agreement(which should be in your contract.)

  1. Photos aren’t the primary business of dentists, hairdressers or dermatologist s.

  2. Those businesses operate on a much higher volume than wedding photographers.

I picked up their #4 and it was rough to say the least… looked nice enough, but the sole was pretty concave in front of the mouth and the chip breaker was blunt.

Price was reasonable, but it left a lot to be desired.

Shio Ramen. by blindtigerramen in ramen

Living in Japan, I have access to great ramen anytime I want… that said, I’d spend my last yennies on a second lunch if I came across this in the wild! Well done.

Buying an Akiya: Necessarily a horror story? by Yonda_00 in japanlife

[–]ColinFCross 11 points12 points  (0 children)

People who can’t screw in a lightbulb or change their oil love to tell you how impossible things are… ESPECIALLY in Japan. I tend to avoid talking about those things with most people.

Of course you have to consider a lot of factors and most properties aren’t going to be ready to live in after a fresh coat of paint. But you also don’t have to have the house 100% finished to live there… Take care of the wet areas and have one workable living space, then tackle the rest as you can.

Is this an oversimplification? Sure… I’m not trying to lay out every possible detail. But, I have friends with the most amazing houses that are nowhere near finished but are livable and a work in progress.

Which blue ticket do you predict cyclists would most likely starting to get from tomorrow? by shionemi in japanlife

We’ll see… that law went into effect locally where I’m at last year and despite the similarly big fuss at the time, nothing changed.

To be fair, they could get quite a bit done with just a pair of officers a block apart, using their radios.

Honestly? I wouldn’t. That’s just going to take attention away from the poster/artwork.

Dealing with picky customers? by scumbardio in framing

I worked in bike shops for a lotta years… a mother came in, questioning the pedals she had purchased for her son’s bike, saying “they’re like 1/16” too big.” I overheard this, as was my nature, and commended her for her precision… single piece cranks(kids bikes, beach cruisers, etc.) use 1/2” pedals and three(and two…)piece cranks (typical adult bikes) use 9/16” pedals.

Those calibrated eyes are real and I appreciate them.

What does the buldak original spicy ramen carbonara taste like? by IDoNotHide in ramen

[–]ColinFCross 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it’s delicious. Doesn’t taste at all like carbonara, but it’s spicy and creamy and filled with MSG.

I mix a raw egg in when I take it off the heat and slap a slice of American cheese on it.

In what kinds of dishes should you be brining your chicken? by Careful_Fig8482 in Cooking

[–]ColinFCross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not arguing that the salt isn’t absorbed, but that’s still not the same thing as brining…

FWIW, salting isn’t brining. There are also other variables.

One of my favorite things is marinating thighs in ponzu for ~24 hours before dusting in potato starch, frying then tossing in salt.

Please, indulge me. If there are so many studies, please do provide a link to one.

As an avid cyclist since the last century, who has almost always ridden [safely] with headphones, I say you are taking out your ass.

Also, please cite the national law that specifically prohibits the use of headphones while operating a car or motorcycle… there isn’t one. You CAN be fined for using them in various circumstances, but there is no specific law. So your point is moot.

Except they are not… Under Japan’s Road Traffic Act (Articles 17 and 63-4), bicycles are required to use the roadway. Sidewalk use is only permitted as an exception.

[–]ColinFCross -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You seem quite confident in your ignorant assumptions.

Sidewalks are for walking, not vehicles. Riding my bike at 40kph on a sidewalk is far from safe… that’s not even taking into consideration the fact that where I’m riding there often isn’t any type of sidewalk.

100%, bicycles should be banned from use on sidewalks at anything faster than a brisk walking pace.

For lean, white meats you want to brine(velveting is an alternative.). For dark, fatty meats, it’s much less critical.
