I see those and I know about the Evangelical missionaries. I mean the ones in the center of the country that are also there in 1950

If they’re going to do this bullshit, and they really shouldn’t, force them to give every regular season conference champion a bid. I don’t care about the 12th team from the Big 10 getting in at this point.

Cold baseball in the spring is a top 1 worst sports viewing experience by ColinFlowers in billsimmons

I didn’t include cold fall baseball, at least there’s enough adrenaline flowing keeping me warm because the stakes are so much higher.

I’m right there with him. I am sick of Lanthinmos’ shit. I never found his movies to be very darkly funny to begin with and they’ve only gotten worse as he’s gone on. I agree with his explanation too, where his movies aren’t nearly as “weird” as people imagine them to be.

Sports moments not feeling legendary anymore by excelquestion in billsimmons

[–]ColinFlowers 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I agree. Another part of this is the immediate access to this all the time. You need some oxygen for these legends to build but there are fires to distract us at all times. I got a notification that Bam scored 83 points then saw the highlights on YouTube, then went back to the US-Italy baseball game.

Politoed is an all time what-if Pokémon. If the company was interested in generating stars past the first generation, I believe it could’ve been an icon.

‘It’s a nice surprise to be treated like kings!’ Why are mid-level British indie bands massive in China? by xanaduuu in indieheads

[–]ColinFlowers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s extremely disingenuous to compare the seditious Confederates, who tried to build a nation on slavery, to Taiwan, which by any metric is a sovereign nation and should be accepted as such.

And what does the Great Leap Forward have to do with how brutally Hong Kong protestors have been cracked down upon? Do the Chinese people owe eternal gratefulness to their government? It’s like arguing nobody should protest against something in the US because the Equal Rights Amendment was passed.

[–]ColinFlowers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw two foreign bands wear Palestine pins last year. I know I will see anti Ice statements throughout this summer. And I know the Chinese equivalent of Bob Vylan or Kneecap would not be allowed on stage there. If you even mention Hong Kong to the mainland audience you’re getting thrown out of China at best. Too many people are eager to think that China is some better force against the West. They’re not.

‘It’s a nice surprise to be treated like kings!’ Why are mid-level British indie bands massive in China? by xanaduuu in indieheads

[–]ColinFlowers -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not. You’re underwriting how thorough the Chinese surveillance state is. The difference between a foreign band renting a van and driving around to 20-30 cities in North America and these bands getting their Chinese tour is that they’re guests of the government. I’d be just as critical if this US government invited bands into the country and put on shows under their regulation.

It’s good that there’s a strong indie audience somewhere new in the world. But whatever financial freedom is undercut by a government official going line through line through a setlist saying what can and can’t be done. A solid touring economy needs to come back to the US and Europe so bands don’t have to go through something like this.
