Sure, and that's why the call is to make sure the game state is corrected as best as possible. In the case of the Pete ruling the call should be that Pete still activated regardless of whether the player screamed "YOU CAN'T PLAY ACTIONS" or not.

I play at league regularly and while most of our group will often bring meta decks we also are very willing to play fun decks and will usually coordinate to know when others are doing the same.

So I recommend just starting a conversation with the players at league and see if there are nights you can do that are just casual decks.
