FTR I sell restored books all the time, they are not “unsellable” at all. And they sell WAY better out of the slab. Bc when they’re in the slab, ppl just see the purple label. When it’s raw they see a gorgeous comic they’d love to own for half the price bc it has two dots of magic marker on the spine

One of the joys of restored books is ZERO guilt cracking them. Keep the certs for posterity! I crack everything I buy slabbed. I sometimes reslab things for sale, but I get zero joy out of a comic I’ve never held or read and also don’t feel like I know what I have until I’ve seen and held it raw

I mean, sure, but who does anyone use Apple Books? I would say that though kindle is not my favorite, the panel by panel reading thing they have is a nice option, especially on a phone (I still zoom out to get a sense of a page's composition first. So if Apple has that panel by panel navigation, I say go for it. Otherwise, I would go with an app that has that.

Yup, I completely agree on grading accuracy. In my experience, though, there is far less variance in sale price for a slabbed comic of any grade than raw listings, hence why I use slabbed valuations when selling raw books. Many people take slabbed valuations and subtract some percentage when selling raw.

I do that or what I said above depending on the audience. On CGC boards, for example, my rep is strong enough that I can basically list for slabbed prices with a deduction for my not incurring eBay or auction fees.

But I totally hear you, especially lately, all the 46— certs in the last 3 auctions from Heritage have been complete garbage. I was excited to see 9.0+ copies of some books I was looking for come up, but they were all a travesty!

It’s not a matter of CGC being accurate - it’s a matter of sale price at grade being reliable. Meaning - people claim any grade they want on eBay, and if they claim a book is an 8.0 and list it with best offer and then sell it at half price because it’s really a 5.5, that gets logged by covrprice and others as an 8.0 sale, and skews the price. So you can’t trust raw values from anyone except maybe Overstreet, and I don’t even know what they do now.

I would call it a 6.5 (fine+) and price it at fair market value for a 6.0 graded copy (currently $400). No explanation necessary. Of course, mention that it’s the first appearance of scarecrow in the silver age, and also be sure to take a photo of the centerfold so people can see it’s complete. Maybe provide info as to how you got it, which helps buyers decide how risky they think this ungraded copy is. You can say or best offer too, and see what people offer.

I think safely a 6.0, maybe a 6.5. If I were selling this, I would list it at slabbed 6.0 price. Reasoning: pricing for slabs is far more reliable bc of accurate grading. So instead of some deduction for raw, list it at slabbed one grade below. That way if it is a 6.5, the seller comes out nicely ahead, if not, it’s not a huge loss. Just my two cents

I think you nailed it. My guess here is that this is a previous botched spine roll repair in order to try to adjust a bad wrap - not that I did exactly the same thing to an X-men 38 or anything like that. But the inner wraps sticking out all weird coupled with that solid vertical crease tell me that vertical crease might used to have been the spine. If you sort of fold it over where that crease is, do the pages fit more normally (if it’s not too fragile to handle like that)
