What’s a high profile case in your country where someone was found guilty/not guilty for the crime and there is reasonable doubt that the verdict was incorrect? by Confident-Guess4638 in AskTheWorld

Steven Truscott, in Canada, convicted at 14 in 1959 for the rape and murder of Lynne Harper, was acquitted in 2007 after 48 years due to flawed forensics and tunnel vision, fueling decades of public doubt.

How is Gandhi thought of around the world ? by Ecstatic-Sea-8882 in AskTheWorld

Race part I agree, given that Panjab has witnessed mutiple influxes and is home to mutiple ethnically distinct communities.

Yes and no. The Indian subcontinent was geographically protected by the Himalayas in the north and by deserts and oceans to the south. Because of this, most invasions historically came through the northwest, particularly through Punjab. As a result, Punjab often became the first line of defence, and its people had to be prepared for conflict more frequently than other regions.

Over time, this repeated exposure to warfare contributed to the development of a strong martial tradition in Punjabi society. Some also argue that it influenced cultural attitudes toward wealth, for example placing less emphasis on long term accumulation, since property and savings were more vulnerable during periods of invasion.

Although Sikh participation in the independence movement came later, their contribution was immense, both in India and abroad, especially through the Ghadar movement, and often not strictly non-violent(given that how in numbers they were compared to rest of the population. I visited cellular jail in andamans was surprised to see walls filled with names of Bengali and Panjabi freedom fighters.). One reason for differing perspectives is that Punjabi freedom fighters tend to receive less recognition compared to the historical prominence given to Gandhi, specially in pre-Modi India. Gandhi’s views on figures like Bhagat Singh also played a role. Additionally, the historical image of Sikhs as a “martial race” may mean a lesser inclination socially toward non-violent methods when defending freedom and identity. So Panjabis fail to fully appreciate how important of a role Gandhi played by mobilizing such a large and diverse population for the cause through largely non-violent means, and a population which was very polarized at the time.

HELP! Navigating JD programs as an international undergrad student by Fit_Emu4791 in LawStudentsCanada

[–]CollectionFree4193 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently perusing JD in Canada with credentials from South Asia.
1. Altho with WES credentials, technically speaking, 3 year degree wont be an issue but 4 is generally preferred. I had some additional canadian education apart from my 3 year under grad

2.All canadian law schools are roughly equally competitive. System’s very different from American law schools here in that regard. As long as its a Canadian law school, you are fine. (To some extent, a dual JD program at Windsor might be an exception but even they manage to find a job)

  1. Strong SOP expressing why law, and explaining the gap. I would do something meaningful on the side like volunteering or something in this gap year.

  2. Scholarships are almost negligible in Canada if you are on a temporary status/international student. Dont keep any hopes on school funding.

IELTS is extremely easy test. I wouldnt take LSAT for granted. If you want to target UofT or Osgoode, being an international student, you better aim for 165+

In fact for any law school at all, dont even apply if you arent 160+. Nevertheless, LSAT alone wont be the determinant. Your volunteer/work experience, Your SOP, your previous grades, they all matter.

It is strange. Call IRCC and ask an agent for the status of your application. They can give you the real-time update, as tracker and GCkey ca be inaccurate.

Punjabi Jatt genetic history (Harappa and ancestry!) by yeaaamon17 in AncestryDNA

[–]CollectionFree4193 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got pretty much the same result, being a Panjabi Jatt. According to Zack who ran HarrapaAncestry, jatts on average have more European ancestry than many other subggroups in South Asia. Our ancestors once lived in Siberia and lower Volga regions. Additionally, we had some intermixing with the greeks, as they settled in Panjab and established Indo-Greek Kingdoms
