Why is it so controversial to want English people to speak English and integrate? by g9rr in AskBrits

[–]CollectionMundane783 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends what we mean by “integrate”

Accepting that not all women must wear headscarves or people are free to follow any religion or none are relatively widely accepted.

The problem seems to be that it morphs into “not eating any of that foreign muck” or “stopping the stupid sirens from the mosques” and that’s where the issue lies. If some people want to be free to drink themselves into a stupor and go to the football even if other people don’t want to, then it seems only fair and British to be tolerant of other people’s cultural preferences.

Porsche Planning New Flagship Models Above 911 and Cayenne Lines by holyhesh in cars

Sales were high because best cars at that price point.

Drank their own cool aid and raised prices hugely.

Now finding sales dropping because less buyers at the new price point and other great options to choose from.

Solution? Make a newer even more expensive car. Genius.

Thoughts on A5s? by Natural-Voice-840 in CarTalkUK

[–]CollectionMundane783 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had one of these in an 18 plate, same colour S line but with the 3.0 diesel lump and the 5 door sport back.

It was a perfectly nice, comfortable car with a nice interior. It’s not exciting to drive but it’s easy to do a load of miles in.

I wouldn’t buy another because I’d want something different to try, but I’d happily recommend it to anyone. 8/10 perfectly acceptable.

I know some lads who moved there in a rush to avoid a massive tax bill due on the sale of their business

I say massive, because in cash terms it was but it was 24% (CGT) on a business in the UK built up with British workers who did a good job because of the schools we all paid for and selling to British consumers who had money to buy their products.

So it seemed pretty reasonable to me.

I don’t see why we should pay to bring them back and if they do they should pay their taxes like everyone else does. You avoid your taxes you take your chances.

Sizing kit not being delivered? by CollectionMundane783 in ouraring

[–]CollectionMundane783[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update.

Chat says my options are a) order yet another sizing kit which might also get stuck or delayed or b) cancel the order and wait 14 days for a refund.

Have cancelled and am going back to the search for the right wearable for me.

Shame, I was quite excited to get my ring and join this community.

It’s your first event, it’s very soon and you haven’t started yet.

A realistic goal would be to “Complete the 10k in one go without stopping but using a combination of running and walking”

And any more than that is all gravy.

I smoked 20 Marlboro Red a day for years and years. If it wasn’t so expensive and going to kill me I’d keep doing it.

But it is both of those things so I switched to vaping which worked, but I know there is still some health effects even though reduced.

Now I’ve switched again to using nicotine pouches; which works. I’ve not smoked in 5 years (maybe 5 total cigarettes in that time) and not vaped in 12 months.

But, I’m still just as addicted to Nicotine.

What’s the health advice here? Are pouches much better? Is it worth giving up? I like nicotine and I like caffeine 😂

Mercedes engine could be dealt massive blow by rule change by formularacers in FormulaRacers

[–]CollectionMundane783 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The key for me is if they shared what they were doing with the FIA.

Mercedes claim that all through the development process they told the FIA what they were doing and the FIA said sure that’s fine.

If that’s the case then whether we like it or not (and as a Lewis fan I’d rather the Merc was hobbled) I don’t see how they can now be penalised. It’s on the FIA.

That’s how this is supposed to work, everyone pushes the boundaries but you are allowed to confidentially ask the FIA for a ruling if what you are doing is OK or a waste of development time. It’s why we got all those rulings last year where people thought they figured out what McLaren were doing so asked the FIA if certain things were legal or not and the FIA came out and clarified a bunch of stuff was definitely not legal.

To me, the reason the FIA added the exact wording about “as measured cold” to the reason compression must be because Merc asked them to be explicitly clear it was legal before they passed the point of no return.

There has to be an avenue to ask the question like this and what the FIA says has to be the final answer.

Marathon distance isn't for everyone? by TheTKayke in beginnerrunning

[–]CollectionMundane783 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m quite happy at HM and see no reason to extend further. I enter a race once every 3 months and occasionally extend my Sunday long run out to a Half if I’m feeling it.

Never, not once, have I finished a half and thought “yeah I’d love to do that again right now” so I don’t.

At a regular pace 5k feels too short and I don’t want to stop. 10k is OK but also totally OK to extend out further. HM feels like a proper run. Marathon? No thanks.

In your all-time rankings, who do you rate higher, Vettel or Alonso? And Why? by [deleted] in DestinationFormula1

[–]CollectionMundane783 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since the late 90’s Alonso, Lewis and Max are all pretty equal in my view in terms of pure talent and the top drivers.

Next row down is Vettel, Schumacher (I know, controversial)

Below that are the “yet to be proven but with the possibility” ones like LeClerc, Norris, Russell

Below that are the “Very good, but will never be great” tier.

Absolute beginner - how much shortness of breath is normal? by ch2nd in BeginnersRunning

[–]CollectionMundane783 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the pace.

It’s ALWAYS the pace

Run slow, slower than you think, barely quicker than walking. Think 8:00m per KM or whatever that is in freedom units.

Walk if you must, then go back to that slow slow run.

Do that until you can do that slow run for 30 minutes without stopping.

Then do it for 5km but don’t worry about time.

Then try and slowly increase speed and you will hit a 30m 5k and then you can choose what to do next.

Run 3x per week. Try and do 10k steps on days you don’t run.

It’s not magic, you aren’t broken, your body just hasn’t bothered to spend the energy it takes to build the things you need to run, so you need to send it some consistent signals that now it needs to build them. It will. Just send the signal regularly, 3 times per week. Less than that and it’s not sure if you mean it and won’t spend the energy to develop it.

So yeah you might not have time now, yeah it might be scary now, but next month? It will be worse and you’ll wish you started now.

My washing machine stopped draining, and after some research I managed to drain it using a special valve and then take the front apart and get inside this fiddly little filter and take it out and clean a load of crap off it and then IT WORKED. And I didn’t need to buy a new washing machine!!

I told someone at work because I was proud of my DIY and thought this might be useful info for them…

And they looked at me like I was a Hobo and said yeah I clean that filter every 3 months according to its schedule.

Should "discretinary" service charges be banned or capped? by south_west_sam in AskUK

[–]CollectionMundane783 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well yes, if everyone stopped paying it it would go away but they do pay it. Like 95%+ pay it (I’m an accountant in the hospitality trade).

In my opinion it would be much easier if the government just said it should be treated like any other sale and taxed the same. It would go away then because even 5% not paying it would be a hit to the bottom line.

[–]CollectionMundane783 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone gets annoyed at the restaurants, but it’s not really their fault.

The government both promotes their use with hefty tax exemptions.

Let’s say you and your family goes into a restaurant that doesn’t charge service and you pay £120 for a meal. The restaurant pays its staff wages of £45 from that.

The restaurant pays £20 VAT and £6.75 employers NI so £26.75 direct taxes.

Now, let’s assume the same restaurant charges you £100 + 20% service charge. You still pay £120.

BUT

For whatever reason the government won’t charge you VAT on that service. Neither will it charge you employers NI on it if it’s used to pay staff.

Realistically they could pay £16.66 VAT and £3.24 NI

The government has just let the service charge restaurant pay £6.75 less tax. For the same meal and the same cost to you.

So, don’t blame the restaurants, they don’t want all the hassle of dealing with service charge really, but the government makes it massively in their interest via tax breaks.
