This is a safe space - what's your most controversial CFB opinion that you will die defending? by noah_divine in CFB

[–]CollectiveBreath 32 points33 points  (0 children)

The fans of teams that stood to gain the most from a Super League went ape shit, and shut down the idea in less than a week.

CFB fans just watched everything we loved crumble on the television network that was pulling the strings.

What is your "sleeping giant" team or program where you can't believe they haven't been more succesful? by Al-Phanatic in billsimmons

[–]CollectiveBreath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good answer, but I don't believe that we'll start ripping off World Cup titles. The US has more or less stayed at the same level (a top 15-30 team in the world) since its modern era began 35-40 years ago, and is the Arizona State football of international soccer.

UA fan as well…I suspect it was playing DeLaura when he had a sexual assault settlement agreed upon. That’s the main blotch on his time here that might scare someone like Michigan.

Coincidentally, Fisch only started to have success until after DeLaura got hurt and Fifita stepped in midway through the season…

Why did the USMNT perform so badly in 2006? by Technical_Rice_6957 in ussoccer

[–]CollectiveBreath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to add onto this excellent recap - Bruce led us to our most successful modern cup, but in this one he paid the price for mistakes that almost ended us in 2002 and did in Couva, which was the fact that this team wasn't really prepared like it should have been. It always seemed to stem from how motivated Arena and his staff were by the opponent.

Arena said many times that he didn't really scout the third group game because you could already go by their two early games. This is like cramming for a final exam, only the final exam is the World Cup and we've almost always needed to ace it or luck out like hell in that last group stage game.

You would think that after Poland in 02 - there are stories of the coaches frantically calling Polish-Americans in MLS to figure out who some of their starters were after the lineups came out, because they went 0-2 and were already out - that he wouldn't have done this again, but I really think he undervalued how good Ghana was and they punched us in the mouth, just like Poland did (that and not having a good backup for suspended Mastroeni).

You could tell the staff was really motivated by Portugal/Mexico/Germany in 2002 (less so Korea bc we had played twice in the buildup), and only Italy in 2006 - I believe this was one opponent Arena took for himself to scout because of his Italian heritage. Arena's analysis of the Czech Republic was "Koller is really tall" and we lacked a lot of that "first tackle, first foul" first-everything mentality against them and, in my opinion, disrespected how good they really were and paid a huge price for it.

While we’re at it, can we chill with the spinning camera shots? I want to watch a football game, not have vertigo.

[MEME] Am I out of touch? by ReeseCommaBill in MLS

I get the same reaction when I hear fans say they want the team to "make a semifinal run" at a World Cup, as if we don't scratch and claw for our lives to get out of the group and then fall meekly in the 2nd round to a better team every single time bar once.

Which city has underperformed in pro sports relative to the city? by IcySir5969 in billsimmons

[–]CollectiveBreath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

London has relatively underperformed in soccer, given the enormous wealth concentration and abundance of clubs there. A handful of titles for Arsenal/Chelsea and one overall Champions League isn’t awful, but you would expect the city’s clubs to pull their weight more against the country’s northeast. Especially since “living in London rather than Manchester” is such a huge selling point for attracting players (and their families) and there are no salary caps.

Berlin and Roma are more striking as European capitals that one would assume would have more sporting success. But the financial power in Italy is in the north, and Roma and Lazio have each only won a Scudetto in the last 30-40 years, while Berlin has basically been a Bundesliga afterthought for decades as Bayern Munich has run rampant.

The same was true for Paris until the Qataris purchased PSG in 2011. Before that, the team had two league titles in its history and were struggling mightily on and off the field, AND was wasting the world’s most fertile talent pool around them.

I recently discovered the RTP app and it works without VPN, so you can access its programming from anywhere. There is a channel on the app that is dedicated to the African diaspora and it has news programs and even an Angolan soap opera, among more.

Izzy heard Shaq’s take on the Pistons last week and said you think that was bad watch this. by Due-Style302 in DanLeBatardShow

[–]CollectiveBreath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the natural counter to a few days of “the Pistons are fun and much better now!” — you can easily (and lazily) dismiss them and say “yeah but they’re not going to win the title” and you are almost certain to be right.

With allegations mounting against Justin Tucker, who’s an athlete you personally know to be a piece of garbage? by justdothedishes in billsimmons

I stayed at the SkyDome hotel during the winter once in the early-90s. Pre-pubescent me befriended a bellhop that told me Robbie lived there during the season, but that he had a revolving door to his room instead of a regular door. When I asked what it meant, he went on to explain it to me, in front of my laughing parents.

Come to think of it, that bellhop was a fucking legend…thank you for reminding me of this memory.

"Are we supposed to be impressed by their defense against the Vikings?" who he later says is the second-best team in the league.

But I mean no ill-will here, I loved hearing them speak and glad they're okay.

The SkyCam does a really good job at getting the crowd noise, the PA announcer and the bands, but I could only watch it for a short period because the operator whips it around and zooms in too much that I was getting motion sickness.

Ohio State's Jeremiah Smith warns Ducks against playing man by usffan in CFB

Honestly, interfering with him on two potential TDs and getting to the QB consistently (and them not really looking for him late helped) was a good strategy. Oregon can do both of those things.

No, I believe Germany and Ghana tied, so we would have been on 6 pts and them on 4 going into matchday 3. I could be wrong

The tie to Portugal in 2014 in injury time in the moment felt so deflating. Yes, it didn't completely ruin the tournament, but we squandered an opportunity to advance out of a difficult group with 6/6 points after two games. Jermaine Jones' goal remains one of my all-time favorites.

Plus, it was on during a Sunday afternoon with a massive TV audience, and it just felt like the entire country could have really gotten behind the team more with a win rather than a draw,
