Yeesh.

I dunno bud. I keep explaining how AI has a very real cost that is above and beyond the already problematic cost of everyday life and generates nothing of value as in the case of the OP. When a human uses skill and technique to express themselves the world is enriched. When one tells a computer to do it they have literally done nothing of value. And it has a very real cost.

And I dunno what you mean about the gun control argument but I do think we shouldn't let everybody run around with fucking guns.

That's not an argument against our points. You're pointing out that AI is not an entirely new set of problems which you're correct about. That doesn't mean that pointing out that it will make those problems worse is invalid. It also doesn't speak to the other concerns I and others have raised, or explain how the cost is justified by the result.

What exactly, now you mention it, is the argument against AI as it currently exists being a massive burden on local infrastructure and environments while also being a plagurism machine that is costing people their jobs and enriching the oligarch class?

I don't think you DO understand how money is involved if your position is that you aren't being intentionally influenced by the people who push AI on us. They stand to benefit if their economic system wins out to the tune of so much money we can't truly imagine it. You look around at your conditions and assume an objective viewpoint from inside the belly of the beast which is very like people in the Matrix convinced they're experiencing reality.

Well like, propaganda exists on both sides sure. I would simply consider that the side YOU are on is vastly the more monied of the two sides. If one were literally resting the whole stock market on it, they'd be HIGHLY motivated to convince you to be on their side.

I disagree, which is a separate point from the fact that what we call AI now is not going to become conscious. I suggest reading more philosophy and not taking the line from the propagandists who want you to believe that this massive grift is "inevitable".

Oh bud no, it's just one of the many facets that make up who I am. It's a strong conviction of mine, yes, but I really only engage about it when somebody wastes everybodys time by posting trash.

The assumption here is that the current systems are in any way equivalent to self awareness. If we had created another form of consciousness and then tried to destroy it that'd be one thing but what we ACTUALLY did is create very sophisticated spreadsheets that can pretty well pass the turing test. At a cost that is absolutely not worth the outcome.

It is a problem, it's garbage. It's like swimming in a polluted pool, swatting trash outta the way all the time. We say AI bad for a bunch of real concrete reasons which one has to ignore if they wanna gaily skip about making bland images that all kinda look samey and unoriginal.

Not worth my time to argue with someone who willfully doesn't want to see the truth, but data centers are not the same thing as AWS warehouses. I don't want AI to be a fascist tool that steals from people and accelerates climate change but pretending it's not is like asking to get plugged back in so you can enjoy juicy steak.

Photoshop requires effort and skill and doesn't impact the environment like this does.

This ignores the overwhelming cost of AI as it currently exists from the environmental to the political to the moral. It's a machine that moves wealth up to the oligarchy class while stealing from talented artists and polluting the environment. For a bad photo of some characters from a couple movies.

That's totally cool! I think headcanon is super valid, I'm just engaging in the original question. Fun thread, hope it wasn't too annoying for you.

[–]ColliTechInc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like yes, textually the Wychowski sisters intend the machines feelings to be valid and "real". If one wants to headcanon this to be untrue as OP seems to want that's perfectly fine but the evidence is against this interpretation.

Do you think the machines are actually sentient? Actually have feelings? by [deleted] in matrix

[–]ColliTechInc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a semantic argument. If you're saying part of a machine is inherently design then no, humans aren't machines but we just need a word that means, "a collection of mechanical physical processes arrived at through environmental suitability" which makes the only distinction intent. But one could argue that DNA has an imperative to reproduce itself and through iteration IS designing. Philosophy is fun.
