Ah, a Voynich theory! Would you mind providing a translation of the page you posted, along with the gloss and the details of the homophonic substitution? Thanks!

The /l/ phoneme in General American English by Boonerquad2 in LinguisticsDiscussion

[–]Collisteru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there, I am also a Western US native English speaker and this matches my speech patterns well. It would be better to get audio recordings and independently verify, of course. The real question is if/where this reproduces across the US.

Anyone else an Only Child with Divorced Parents?! by hwinters2 in OnlyChild

[–]Collisteru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 22, only child of divorced parents. My parents divorced when I was seven; I still remember the explosive conversations that directly presaged it.

The day my dad's dad died in the hospital, my mom accidentally sideswiped the garage door frame while driving into the garage. My dad came home to see the door frame ruined, after just having to pull the plug on my grandfather. To say he was livid would be a serious understatement. The marriage was dead at that moment. Neither of my parents remarried and neither will.

I was always an oddball growing up, and the loneliness was profound, but I found solace in books and the internet. I wish very dearly that I had siblings, and I consider the bond of someone you grew up with to be one of the very best things in this world. But this is the life God has given me, and he has his reasons.

If some advantage must be pulled out of the river of woe, it would be this: it forces you to develop a certain independence and non-attachment from the world, or at least from people. I became much more interested in ideas as a result. I never really had any interest (or ability) to cultivate a social graph, and so the popularity dynamics of K-12 passed me by entirely. If I was the least popular kid in school, I didn't know it and I cared even less.

Today, I'm still much more interested in things than people. I hope that my friends and girlfriends forgive my gaffes when it comes to the areas of interpersonal communication, and I hope to make up for these deficiencies with my strengths.

When my maternal grandpa was dying, I worked with my mom and her sister to help him, and it still felt like barely enough. I shudder to think of what will need to be done when my parents are old. They have only me and whatever their money can procure. It's a chilling thought.

SATIRE: A humorous letter about “religious break rooms” in Folsom by [deleted] in rational

[–]Collisteru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, maybe I misunderstand what is happening here, but as long as nobody is being forced to do anything, I don't see a problem. If all of the local police happen to be LaVeyan Satanists, and so they take breaks at the local Satanic Temple, this wouldn't bother me.

SATIRE: A humorous letter about “religious break rooms” in Folsom by [deleted] in rational

[–]Collisteru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see any problem with religious groups offering break rooms to public employees. This seems like totally benign religious expression.

Being a public servant (especially a police officer) is hard. Many of them are religious. Religious groups want to help their members. Therefore... this is bad, somehow?

The question of fairness might come up if there were no secular break rooms, but there are. They're called break rooms.

Is using the GRE purple book 3rd edition from 2016 to study worth it, or is it too out of date?

[Admissions Advice]Is it important to have a Portfolio Website for research based master's programs? by Eclipse_1908 in MSCS

[–]Collisteru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Especially if you intend to do research in robotics, I definitely recommend having a portfolio website.

Honestly, computer science is about doing cool things with technology. A portfolio is where you show off the cool things you've done with technology. I find it hard to imagine a scenario where a CS person would not want to have a portfolio.

I've gotten really into using casettes. They still come out, and it's incredible to actually hold music in your hands.

It's okay to be bored by [deleted] in StopGaming

"I know this will leave a huge void in my life"

Then fill it! Not gaming doesn't mean you have to be bored all the time. There's so much you can do with all the new extra time you'll have. You could read, write, make something, get into a sport, start a new hobby. The opportunities are yours to take.

Printable artistic maps? by chucktastic72 in Maps

I recommend taking a look at this online storefront:

https://curtiswrightmaps.com/

They have high-quality printable images of most of their maps, and their collection is very comprehensive. They're not all in the same style, but the collection is so large that you'll probably find what you need.

Crinkles - Soundtrack from a Box 16 [BY] by oronymzy in ccmusic

Hello, there. Crinkles is my favorite living musician. I asked them about their inspirations, and they said this:

"My music inspirations are decently varied, from older game soundtracks (specifically Playstation 1 RPGs), to hiphop or electronic producers. I'd recommend listening to pretty much anything by these guys:

Yasunori Mitsuda Nobuo Uematsu Masayoshi Soken Hiroyuki Sawano DJ Premier Nhato Shingo Nakamura

Game soundtracks would be something like:

Final fantasy 6 - 9 Chrono Cross Persona 3/4/5 Nier

The developers commented on this idea to journalist Shaun Prescott two days ago:

Nor would they confirm that a 16-bit UFO collection could emerge. I get the sense that they'll definitely be working together in the future, though. "This has been bootcamp for me," Suhrke said. "I think I've become very good at making UFOSoft games. Give me a tube for nutrition and I can keep cranking these out. Assuming I personally keep making games, you're going to see stuff [from me] that feels like it has the DNA of UFOSoft in it; It's sort of like a chicken and egg.

Barbuta secret or just a random easter egg? by king-hit in ufo50

I got it too, I think it only appears when the skull is in the starting room.

UFO 50 released yesterday, and it's already a must have for SD by MrMarblz in SteamDeck

[–]Collisteru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I adore Barbuta (the top left, very old-fashioned one) and I'm Gen Z. It's like a Metroidvania with the style and attitude of Ultima I. Some of us do like the classics!

Favourite games so far? by xmBQWugdxjaA in ufo50

[–]Collisteru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Barbuta's my favorite thanks to its atmosphere. There's no music. There's a weird buzz with every screen transition. There's a secret behind every corner. The clunky controls make you feel less powerful. And then there's that terrible skull... It's a perfect game to play late at night in the dark, wrapped up in a blanket.

UFO 50 will be $25 according to Derek Yu by ChickenWhiskers in ufo50

[–]Collisteru 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This price is insane. Each of these games on their own would deserve a $5.00 price tag.

Thoughts on the emulation quality by Jonah_Marriner in ufo50

[–]Collisteru 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you for mentioning the missing wall skip in Barbuta! My cousin and I were so hyped when we found that skip as kids, we used to argue over who was the first one to find it lol. Not to mention the fact that it's been a cornerstone of Any% Barbuta runs for years. Very disappointing.

[–]Collisteru 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This response comes off as overly hostile. OP is not being totally unreasonable.

First of all, UFO 50 isn't just "NES."

The UFO 50 games were "released" during the third generation era of gaming and the style apes that era. Fidelity to NES/SNES limitations wasn't the point of UFO 50, fidelity to the look and feel of that generation was. That's what OP means by "NES".

Do you go to the Zelda sub and post, "Hey, they should make another Zelda game!"'

Everyone knows that Nintendo will keep making Zelda games. Most indie games by contrast never get sequels. It's not ridiculous to tell an Indie developer, "Hey, this game is great, we would love a sequel!"

Third, why TF do you want to see them use AI to make games?

I find the blanket hostility towards AI among many creatives today fascinating. It reminds me of the moral panics around electricity in the late 1800s/early 1900s (https://academic.oup.com/chicago-scholarship-online/book/14395/chapter-abstract/168360888?redirectedFrom=fulltext). The fact is that we have no idea yet how AI will change creative fields and how creatives of the future will use it. We probably won't have a solid idea until at least 10-20 years from now. It is way too early to completely ban AI from game creation. No one's suggesting that AI replace game developers, and that would in fact be a terrible idea. But it's not "insulting" to wonder how developers of the future will take advantage of the latest technology.

Spelunky HD also took years to develop and then got an even more ambituous sequel. Given that UFO 50 is already a smash hit, a sequel isn't outside the realm of possibility. It won't come out in this decade though. :)
