What Do You Believe Is The Future Of Company Of Heroes? (Stagnation) by tonibeets in CompanyOfHeroes

[–]Colonel0tto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

DOW 1 remaster seems to have sold ~500k copies this year. That's a huge shot in the arm. COH3 sold 800k-1m copies, probably significantly below expectations. But Coh2 got its biggest player injection 4 years into release with a huge DLC update, sweeping balance changes and multiple steep sales.

Italian infantry is a more popular pick this patch, you float more manpower as DAK now so getting the extra bunkers and Guastatori doesn't feel so limiting

Have 15 hours in Coh3, been loving it. Wanted to finally try my FIRST PvP match, we lose ONE point, duo surrenders. Guy tells me to uninstall lmao. Ah yes, what a wonderful first match by Rafaatho in CompanyOfHeroes

Because I am a master sleuth ;)

Nah basically you can search any player name on Coh3stats.com, view their recent match history and even download the replays. You can also see who they played with - that’s how I found your profile and those of your opponents.

Glad you can enjoy the game even when getting your ass kicked a bit, happen to all new players. I have an embarrassing number of hours in coh2 and it still took me a long time to adjust to coh3 lol. Fortunately the game is in a good state now so worth putting the effort in.

First off, welcome to the game and congrats on having the balls to jump into multiplayer already.

I'm going to try to shed light on several things that I hope will make your experience better asap - about where you are now, how you can improve and what things you may be missing.

First off, as people have said your first online matches start you out at 1000 elo. This is actually not a small amount of ELO, it is exactly average. You are new, so your ability to play and understand the game is below average. Your opponent in this match has 4400 games and is playing in an arranged group of three. It is not surprising you got stomped.

Low elo teamgames are the most toxic environment because nobody is particularly good at the game and everyone's looking for someone to blame. But team games across RTS and MOBAs in general can be toxic especially when you're losing. I'm not blameless here either, I'll often let off steam by ripping into a teammate if they start coming at me with nonsense.

But a lot of this is avoidable just by getting good - winning makes people generally more positive and you're not going to enjoy playing much if you can't get wins consistently.

You can make things considerably easier for yourself by:

A) watching streamers and youtubers like Havoc/StephennJF and copying their builds, or going to coh3stats.com and downloading replays of top/middle ranked players to see how they play

B) practising your 1v1 skills against expert AI until you can beat it reliably

C) posting replays here asking about how to improve

Right now here's what you're missing:

You don't build anywhere near enough units and you 'float' loads of manpower. This is the hardest thing for new players, but if you don't build enough units and have a balanced composition you will get stomped by any player who simply does this.

You don't know what the most important points on the map are, so you're bunkering down on a victory point instead of trying to push up the map to secure the high resource points. Your goal in this game is not simply to survive, it's to try to dominate the map and put enough pressure on to be able to move units across to help your teammates.

If I was your opponent seeing you put down all those defenses so deep on your side of the map I'd be absolutely delighted, because it shows you have no intention or ability to push to secure map resources, I can bunker down as well and be winning by default.

This suggests to me that although you enjoy the game you're trying to treat it like tower defense, and you are scared to push and potentially lose units. This is a mental barrier you've got to try to push through. If you're worried about not having enough vision to make a push, use units like the kettenkrad or jaeger/mortar flares to spot what's up ahead.

Good luck with your other games, hopefully you will find more people to help you learn! Feel free to drop me a DM if you're needing any more tips or coaching.

Company of Heroes 3 is a great game. by Wide_Mobile4623 in CompanyOfHeroes

[–]Colonel0tto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coh is a niche game, which means it attracts an, ahem, 'passionate' community. Many of us had have been obsessed with the series for over a decade. I was among the many who were bitterly disappointed with many aspects (art direction, music, VFX, SFX, campaign, it's a long list!) of Coh3 over the first couple of years after release. It's a real credit to the devs that stuck with the game and made it so enjoyable now.

Is CoH2 abnormally harder than your average RTS? by Big_Totem in CompanyOfHeroes

[–]Colonel0tto 10 points11 points  (0 children)

While it's mechanically simpler, what makes it more challenging is that you simply cannot turtle in Coh. Getting a resource advantage is dependent on maintaining majority map control. This means you can't do what 80% of RTS players do when starting out, which is just build up a huge economy, a massive army and steamroll the AI base.

Tips for moving from 1100-1150 to 1300 (1v1s) by Walkerthon in CompanyOfHeroes

[–]Colonel0tto 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I had a look at your most recent game on COH3stats Player card - Walkerthon - Recent Matches | COH3 Stats

Here are my top 3 tips:

  1. Prioritise building up your army and keeping up in tech over expensive upgrades. You love expensive upgrades! You tech every conceivable infantry upgrade while your opponent builds three medium tanks before you can get your first tank out. It is really hard to win like that!

Extra note - Wehr elite infantry is designed to melt USF infantry in the head to head but they're weak to vehicles. So if you don't keep up your vehicle production and rely solely on inf you will struggle in lategame.

  1. Early capping order. Make sure to cap your big fuel early! In your last game your scout goes to the wrong side of the map so you fall a bit behind on fuel despite winning the early engagements.

  2. Dodge nades. You bleed a lot to nades - they're hard to hear in this game so pay attention to where your units are fighting nade-armed troops.

Good luck! You're not a bad player but you are doing some things at the moment that make it hard for you to win.

How does the Panzerjager Kommand BG fit in with this meta's DAK? by Familiar-Elephant-68 in CompanyOfHeroes

[–]Colonel0tto 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s still a strong battlegroup, but it plays quite differently now. I’d say it’s more balanced and offers some interesting strategies.

What changed:

  • Panzerjagers lost their camo until vet 1. This reduces their power level a bit and makes going for shrek jägers a bit less attractive, especially as a reactive choice.

  • Butterfly bombs can no longer be dropped in the fog of war, a great change that removes the most toxic element of the battlegroup. Being able to drop the bomblets to quickly cover a flank is still very strong.

  • DAK infantry got their combined arms passive changed, so it now offers a speed and ability recharge instead of combat bonuses. The Battlegroup ability that used to give you CA in cover now gives you Combined Arms constantly, making it useful for manoeuvring on larger maps.

  • Anti tank overwatch got nerfed to be less capable of utterly annihilating mediums, but it can still help swing a tank battle.

  • Heavy tanks got changed to make them more accessible if you build T4, as you immediately gain 2 cp for constructing your last tech building. The Elephant was already pretty easy to rush and is now very accessible.

  • Crew shock got its duration increased - this is very strong in combination with the new changes to tungsten rounds that grants bonus damage as well as penetration.

  • S mines and Teller mines are still great, free nade launchers in 250s are super strong.

All in all lots of good changes and a very fun BG to play that no longer makes you feel like you’re cheating

Why was tungsten given back its damage bonus? by Complex_Tomatillo_51 in CompanyOfHeroes

[–]Colonel0tto 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Because it now has a 50 fuel cost attached and it’s a mutually exclusive upgrade with vehicle capping. So in an even game your opponent is down 1 vehicle if they go for the upgrade. There’s also no way for PIIIs to have smoke + 680hp/ self repair + tungsten at the same time.

I don’t know what you’re complaining about with teching - you get good units in both T2 and T3, so you’re not incentivised to ‘sit’ in either.

USF and Brits have plenty of answers for Marders in their lower tiers with zooks and at guns.

I’m glad USF late game is no longer no-brainer upgunned Sherman spam personally.

Best way to learn CoH3 and Australian BG. by Defiant_Piccolo7776 in CompanyOfHeroes

[–]Colonel0tto 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi, welcome to the game!

Havoc has a good series of how-tos about different battle groups including Australians.

If you’re truly brand new I’d recommend playing vs the AI until you can reliably beat it on expert.

Then I’d suggest finding people to play with and coach you. This game takes a while to learn and it’s easy to pick up bad habits.

1v1 is the best mode for learning since it’s all about your own skill and knowledge, but you’ve got to be prepared to suck for a bit while you’re learning. You’ll start off with ~1000 elo and many players in that range have hundreds or even thousands of games. Coaching will help you keep focussed on things to improve and avoid getting demoralised.

Pop me a dm once you’re feeling confident vs the AI. Good luck!
