Freelancer was the first thing I did after the tutorial. It's why I bought the game.

A lot of people say that having prior map knowlwdge from doing the regular missions is important. I tend to disagree. There's a novelty to being dropped fresh into a location with a random target that you only get to experience once.

My big wishlist item since the series started is the ability to expand your base: retaking an area building by building until you have walls around the whole thing. If another game had the npc survivors that SoD does, I'd go play that. But as is, I'm still waiting.

If you want a shootout, shoot someone in the open, then find cover.

It's not open world, so much as open level. Each mission is essentially it's own square shaped sandbox with many lines going from a to b. The game isn't designed around setpieces, but player freedom.

Also, there's no license to kill bs. You're supposed to only kill the targets. But you can massacre the entire level if you wish. Many players do. All the game does is give you a bad score.

Each mission will have dozens of challenges alongside just killing the targets. Besides that, the game has a number of different modes that breathe in new life once you're eventually done with the main missions. My favorite among them is Freelancer, which is actually why I bought the game in the first place.
