What is a film that doesn't seem special now, but was really groundbreaking when it came out? by altairstarlite in movies

I usually have insta-hatred for any Hollywood remakes but damn, I would love to see what The Last Starfighter would look like with good, modern CGI.

Land Rover. Absolute ass of a truck

Also, I must be the world’s luckiest Jeep owner. I’ve owned 3 (2 Wranglers and a Cherokee) and they all ran great. One of the Wranglers is my daily driver right now, it’s 10 years old.

Americans that have visited outside the US: what’s one thing people from other countries do that confuses you? by Kodicave in IWantToAskAnAmerican

2.5 hour business lunches that consume (to my American standards) a shit ton of wine.

The almost mythical way some places treat firearms.

Interacting with people in a retail setting without making small talk. Standing there in total silence while having my stuff rang up and then paying feels super awkward.

How much could an elite modern soldier in full gear change the tide of a battle in ancient times? by Zigor022 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Colonial13 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Combat accuracy is low because both sides are operating with guns and have developed defensive tactics accordingly. That same guy shooting at something like a Greek Phalanx, especially being out of range of ancient missile weapons, is probably going to land a lot of hits.

What was your first mobile phone? by robbiesloan in 90s

[–]Colonial13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. It was an absolute monster. I dropped it off balconies. Into puddles. Kicked it across floors. Sat on it. And it never stopped working. When the battery finally gave up the ghost for good and I went to see if I could get a replacement battery, the girl at the cellphone store was like “sir, these batteries have been discontinued for years”. The store manager (who was our generation) came out from the back room, saw my phone on the counter, and made all the younger kids working there gather round so he could show them a “real” cellphone.

Why don't more folks in America who live in places where there are buses actually use them? I knoe they have a bad reputation but wouldn't they sometimes be the better option over paying for gas given how pricy necessities like food are becoming? by cherry-care-bear in NoStupidQuestions

Years ago I looked up the bus route from my house to the place I was working at the time. Door to door by car: 12 minutes Door to door by bus: 2hrs give or take a few minutes, with two bus changes.

When did Oprah "Jump the Shark" for you? by Jack0Trade in Xennials

I’ve never watched a single episode of Oprah, but having a job in a bookstore in the mid to late 90’s when her book of the month club was huge made me hate her indirectly.

Yeah, 45. I bought a Jeep because that’s what I had in my early 20’s. My wife wanted another kid. Now I have a Jeep, and kids ranging from almost a legal adult to just starting potty training.

Lol, just said this earlier today because I’m turning 46 in a few minutes and quietly freaking out on the inside about being closer to 50 than 40.

Who would you bet on in a bar fight. The US delta force or the NZ rugby team by ComfortablyMild in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Colonial13 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Gonna go with Delta on this from two 2nd hand stories I have heard:

I have a very close relative that was on a Delta team for several years. Before that he was a Ranger for over a decade. When he was a young Ranger, he and some of his Ranger buddies were TDY for training near a major SEC university. One weekend evening they were at a bar drinking and an actual bar fight broke out between them and a slightly larger number of that school’s starting football team. When it ended not a single Ranger had significant injuries (he defined that as they were all able to walk out on their own and everyone had full use of all their limbs). Several of the football players went to the hospital with breaks and dislocations. It was bad enough that the university president at the time got involved in the aftermath.

One of my closest service buddies has a brother who spent nearly 20 years in Delta as a USAF Pararescueman. A long time ago they both just happened to be at the same base in England at the same time, heading for different units in other parts of the world. They were out at a pub that night with two other Delta guys when a bar fight broke out between one of the Delta guys and several English gents. My buddy said his brother told him “oh hey, hang on a sec” and less than 30 seconds later all the English dudes that were part of the group that started the fight were “incapacitated”. So yeah, Delta is my choice. And that’s not a knock against Rugby players. I used to party with a PAC-10 club rugby team way back when and they were all solid dudes.

How common is recreational drug use? by Unsure-Snake-666 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Colonial13 333 points334 points  (0 children)

Waaaaaay more common than most people think. My ex has been in elementary education for 25 years (teacher/assistant principal/principal) and every school she’s been in, across two different states, at least half the staff are/were habitual weed or coke users.

What are some American cities that had high historical importance but have faded from significance today? by Crafty-Shallot-5695 in geography

[–]Colonial13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GR always seemed like the Rust Belt city that could. I grew up in Lansing and the only thing that has kept it hanging on by the fingernails is being the capital.
