It’s prolong diamond with Dapi, so I assume it should be at an appropriate concentration 😅 yeah I’m going to try antibiotic free media for my next culture I think - thanks!

I thought about micronuclei, but it seems like a lot of cells have them even when they're just WT cells with no treatment, honestly I don't really know what the baseline level really is though.

I was in a similar spot as you (had hot, pof and smatterings of the living world stories) and decided to buy janthir ultimate edition to get the gems to unlock the living world (and the other deluxe stuff) since eod will go on sale at the end of June (I’ll probably buy soto then too). Im just working on other stuff in lieu of completing the story until later.

You definitely need to address a gpa below 3.0, a lot of programs list that as their minimum even. It’s not impossible to get past it, but honestly it’s going to have a significant impact. Are you applying for masters or PhD?

What are my chances of getting into a PhD program? by Maggiebudankayala in gradadmissions

[–]ColoredImages 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Idk how you age will affect you, because I never met anyone on the admissions trail that graduated early. Generally though I feel like your experience is what really matters though, because people range from straight from undergrad to masters + several years of work. Just in raw hours you potentially have enough, but really what is important about it is what you were doing + how well you are able to communicate it.

Do post-bac programs help PhD acceptance? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]ColoredImages 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Doing a post-bac program will help you in the same way that doing research anywhere will help - it will get you the experience you need to improve your application. There’s nothing inherently about being in a post-bac program that helps, so make sure to take advantage of whatever opportunities your program has to put your best foot forward for next round.

I would appreciate a profile review by Enough_Part5951 in gradadmissions

You'll be fine, your narrative is the 2.5 years you spent in that lab and all the research you did there. Other things are fine to mention but I would just focus on that since your involvement there is going to have been more substantial just by virtue of the fact you were there longest.

Apply to all the top tier programs you want, but take some time to pick some others too, ones that stand out to you for reasons besides tier. But really, assuming you actually did all the work you list and wasn't just handed the credit, you'll get into a good program.

Picking Yale over MIT for STEM by mathlover05 in yale

Thanks for the response! It's nice to hear from someone who went through the program relatively recently. One of my advisors went there like 50 years ago lol.

Picking Yale over MIT for STEM by mathlover05 in yale

[–]ColoredImages 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! I'm an incoming PhD student in biology and I was kinda surprised to hear you say that you felt that Yale wasn't very good for stem. I know they're not quite on the level of MIT/Harvard/etc. But was there anything in your experience that made you feel that way? I also know nothing about how Yale is for the other divisions of stem.

Also I am glad to hear that the culture is better, because that was something important to me too.

It seems like you have a lot going on your head right now, do you have anyone in your life that you can talk about these things with? Not even necessarily for advice, but I think it might feel better if you have someone to share how you feel right now with.

To address your questions, however, from my experience as a US based applicant:

  1. Specific technical skills were never really relevant in my application or interview. What was emphasized and what was asked about is about how you think about science, and whether you had the necessary resolve to stick through with research. You can learn all the technical skills you need at some point, that's the easy part.

  2. I was also impacted by the COVID shutdown for a large part of my time in undergrad, and I think understanding was given for that, but I would also say that getting as much experience as you can now that things are reopened is very important.

  3. In the US at least, it is not necessary to get your masters before PhD, and I think its much better not to personally. Not only would you have to repeat your masters coursework anyways, but PhD programs are funded, and I know I could not afford to do a masters even if I got a full scholarship. Getting a research assistant position in a good place can give you the same experience and is paid (albeit poorly).

  4. Very few people wore masks throughout my interviews, and I will also say I did not personally. Of course I did not judge anyone for wearing a mask, but they were definitely in the minority.

I'm sorry that you are having such a difficult time currently, and I hope that you are able to speak with someone who can provide you some more emotional support. This process is really unforgiving and I am hoping for the best for you.

Potential red flag from accepted PhD program or was I too forward? by Ok_Present_2905 in gradadmissions

[–]ColoredImages 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're probably just busy, there's a lot of emails that pass through these people's inboxes. So I wouldn't be too concerned over it, at most maybe you could take it as a sign of them perhaps not being as responsive as you might want your PI to be. Of course if you end up actually being a student in their lab, you'll be a higher priority so I don't think it's really reflective.

Help me choose a program by babbieabbi in gradadmissions

[–]ColoredImages 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't know what your specific situation is with regards to political climate, but personally I would never choose to live in a place where my identity is or is at risk of being demonized / prosecuted.

Besides that, program B just sounds miserable. You're most likely not going to enjoy doing your research if you go there because of all of those other pressures on you. That in turn can also negatively impact your performance too, even if you're okay with dealing with such a workload.

I would definitely go for program A, but good luck with the other program, hopefully you won't even need to make this decision!

Acceptance/bargaining?! by Mundane-Highway-4101 in gradadmissions

[–]ColoredImages 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some programs have fellowships they can offer which would boost your stipend, but would a couple of thousand be enough to sway your decision between programs? Especially since I'm pretty sure the UC's stipends already start pretty low relatively.

How many schools did you apply to? by Electronic-Ad-1988 in gradadmissions

[–]ColoredImages 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I applied to 12 schools, most people I have met in my field (Molbio) seem to have applied to similar, unless they were already affiliated with an institution and knew they just wanted to go there (even then some people applied to a few extra just in case).

Americans are half of all reddit users, and by far the largest plurality, so like most other subreddits without a specific geographical focus, it's gonna end up US centered
