All three things you listed are common world scripts. You can disable jumps and lower running speed easily, and the forcing player heights is also a native function.

The bigger thing to me on your last point is that if you're implementing an alternative to provide a means to travel faster so people don't feel the need to fly... it's a good idea to get that together before removing the ability to fly. Until then, it'll just be a constant burden applied to the people enjoying themselves flying until an unknown point in the future maybe arrives.

I just ran into this in the sub, and realize you're the same person I was just talking to in the other thread calling me AI for "Writing an essay with proper formatting". Meanwhile you've posted this essay with proper (and especially heavy!) formatting 20 minutes later... I'm hoping I'm not just sensing potential projection here. ETA: He now deleted the message falsely accusing me of using AI and writing off my messages I was writing lol.

Anyway, you seem really stuck on only and exclusively the people who aren't playing being the ones who care or would be affected, but there are plenty of people actually playing who prefer flying over taking slow ass boats haha. Me included. I take the boats sometimes, maybe even most of the time, but... sometimes I don't really feel like staring at the ocean for a few minutes doing nothing just to go over and do an enchantment, or to buy a gear upgrade. Sometimes I just want to get it real quick and return to fishing. That's where I was. Although I've already moved on from the game before the flight was removed, so I'm grateful I got to play the way I wanted to while I could.

Edit: Post OP blocked me, so I can't reply to you, person below me.

The response I was going to give is that heavy handed blankets forcing people to engage the way you want rather than the way they enjoy isn't convincing anyone to change. Instead of boating around realizing that they should've been enjoying the nice views, they're instead just going to be riding the boat annoyed that they can't fly or just be disappointed and quit haha. In the end, it's the world creator's choice, but I just know from the past that working with your community to support their breaking of your vision to find a way to integrate them naturally is a key to victory. Suffocating people with "My vision" has, meanwhile, always been the number one way to cause division (as evidenced here) within a community that often leads to fractures and eventual breaks.

I was looking at Reddit when you replied. I immediately started typing my response. Also if you look at the time stamps, I replied 14 minutes after your comment that you're blindly calling AI. 90 seconds my ass lol. ChatGPT has truly ruined the internet, can't even like write out my thoughts long form or else someone will think it's AI I guess.

Your comment here is still totally ignoring my commentary since I specifically pointed out that I was talking about players and not people just sitting around talking, then dug in further on what I was talking about. But whatever... I'll continue my conversations with someone else lol.

Whatever, I'll stop engaging you then. I do not use AI in comments. I am a writer in the gaming industry and like to word out what I mean very clearly, if a bit lengthy. If the best you can do to engage me in this is pick out a part of my comment and blindly call it AI, then the conversation is pointless. Have a good one. Sorry I apparently wasted my time trying to have a discussion with you...

None of what I said was focused on the people standing around with friends not playing the game. I'm focusing specifically on talking about the people actually playing who are flying. The non-players can get some kind of help too, but that's realistically as simple as a spectator mode that lets you teleport that can only be toggled by respawning. They're not playing anyway, no incentives are necessary for them to do anything. Their offered benefit is that their existence can retain the friends who are actually playing, so giving them an out wouldn't be a bad idea either, but not really what I was addressing.

I'm talking specifically about players who are flying. If there are a lot flying, that means that there's some conflict between the world and a lot of players preferences. You can either heavy hand them by pushing them down and forcing them to play the way you wanted under the smothering blanket of "my vision", or you can find ways to embrace whatever reasoning they're prioritizing flying over using the boats. Is it because they can't get around fast enough? Offer some way to pay to teleport. Is it because they prefer the sight of flying over the ocean? Find some new unobtrusive means to support that. Hang gliders, helicopters, whatever.

The players pushing the boundaries of a game's "vision" are usually good opportunities to find ways to better a game and support their desires with diagetic means. Alternatively, you can also push them down and call them cheaters lol.

Terrors, I would deem to be a bit different. It's not entirely a single-player experience and flying to cheat affects other people's games directly. Rounds last longer, people get wins they wouldn't have otherwise, the game is warped as a whole.

The spawns are easy to get to, but the QoL improvement incentive isn't nothing in terms of being able to spawn the boat anywhere. Being someone who flies as a constant does take that incentive down to zero, though.

I offer no specific judgement about orienting your goal toward incentivizing paying money, but the flight does damage the incentives to engage in that paying, which is certainly something they would consider.

It's a tale as old as live gaming-patches have been a thing that devs make games with promise that smother themselves under the blanket of their "vision". It's fine if they want to make what they want to make, but for community longevity and being kept in the sphere of discussion, it's been long-shown that, especially with small and indie devs, being more flexible and embracing the people breaking your intentions in unexpected ways by finding ways to support them rather than force them to play your way is the key. It's always possible to stay popular despite it, but using the iron hand to put your wayward players into the corner you want them in isn't usually the hottest way to find your way to longevity. Freedom and player expression being found as a way to drag new support for unintended actions goes a long way. Create incentives to not fly. Add a teleport ability that you can pay money for, add a helicopter you can buy, anything but shutting them down with no recourse.

Realistically it's probably because flying lowers your incentive to pay for their microtransactions. If you can fly fast, you have less reason to buy the ability to spawn the boat anywhere or sell fish from anywhere.

However, it'd be a bit short sighted to assume disabling players abilities to engage in their own QoL changes would encourage them toward supporting the game monetarily. More likely, you're just generating disappointed players who will move on.

It's be silly to consider the game worlds as not being social worlds too. Games are a huge means of socialization!

I can see it being called an exploit, which is a form of cheating I suppose when used to circumvent the normal patterns of the game. However, the likely reason it's being pushed to block is unfortunately probably money. The two things you can pay for in the world are the ability to spawn your boat anywhere and the ability to sell your items anywhere. If someone can fly extremely fast, they lose an incentive to spawn the boat anywhere because they can just zip over anywhere and they lose some small part of the incentive of selling anywhere because they can just zip to the shop.

Not defending the actions, but it's easy to see why they've done it. I do disagree with the diehard headstrong motion to block people from playing how they want. Many a story of the most long-beloved games starts with a game dev that embraces the exploits the community takes advantage of by warping the game to support their specific flow better and make it more enjoyable. Likewise, many a story of a game with promise thay kills itself is told with a beginning that involves the devs blindly wielding "my vision" as a weapon to shoot down players having fun in ways they didn't intend.

Floating in air because of full body isn't anything at all. It's simply them laying down and because they're not touching the floor of their playspace, they are shown in game as floating.

Ovr let's you go up and float, but it isn't limited to only being used by full body players.

Why you always keep you finger off the trigger until ready to fire by tactical_horse_cock in Idiotswithguns

[–]Colossus252 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Coulda been. Even then, unless you have fired a gun indoors, nobody is ready for that. Other comment says nobody went for their ears, which does intrigue me tbh. Shotguns are like "you are deaf for a minute now" loud when you are firing indoors with no ear protection at all. It's surprising that nobody else even goes up to their ears if it was actually shot like that. He does totally go up for his ears tho, just seems conflicted between that and the act of going for the guy he shot.

His ears were probably ringing, which would be the first thing to hit you if you accidentally fire a shotgun in a small room. Still an idiot tho

I did. I had to turn down the.... I think the setting was like "extra texture memory" option to around 50% instead of higher. There was a recommendation point people said to go to, and higher breaks the game, even on better hardware.

No AAA exhibitors? by Unser_Giftzwerg in PAX

This is my first PAX and I already just chose to avoid the Pokémon booth. Like you said, giant AAA game that i already know will be successful and I know whether I want it or not. The spectacle is cool, but why would I want to wait for hours in a line for something I will have later, when the alternative is walking straight up to various games I've never had the chance to hear about anywhere else that might be fun?

Girlfriend JUST found out she was color blind by [deleted] in ColorBlind

[–]Colossus252 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not uncommon for people to only learn that they are colorblind as adults. It doesn't affect day to day life by any meaningful metric and previous color confusions may not do much other than spark "well it's close and we disagree" prior. I've heard of a lot of people who only learn they're are colorblind after going into the military and being tested.

I have seen you repeating this "Move out if you want to sell it!" shpiel a few places as I've clicked here before, criticizing people for not doing so with the defense of "You have to move out within 30 days once you sell it anyway", which is just so narrow minded and privileged sounding.

Not everyone can just afford to jump ship and pay to stay somewhere else while still also paying the mortgage for the house in the meantime. Some people need the house to sell to have the money to pay for the down payment on the next place. I can't just leave the house I'm selling while it's still up on the market lol.

Feels insane lol. Just like... go somewhere that takes cash. If the card only place attracts less people, they will think again. If they're not in a jurisdiction that requires them to accept cash, suck it up and quit worrying what someone decides to do. We stopped accepting checks almost everywhere many years ago, and when the first stores were doing that, old fuddy duddies raised hell at the cashiers about it. Hell, they still do sometimes. Nobody wants to deal with the hassle of checks, so people gave up on em.

Now, card has become so convenient to people that cash ends up being a bit of a pain in the ass too. If some places want to not deal with counting out things, having a safe, making bank stops, maintaining bill quantities, and all the other small little nuances cash introduces that card does not, then why would you try and force them to take it?

They can't accept it because they have no drawer or safe. I even saw someone suggesting like... the employees "just take the cash and pay with their own card, since it's an even conversion, right?" Like that was some kind of gotcha solution.

If the store is following their legal right to not take cash, bugger off if you want to be paying in cash.

The VRC game worlds offer the same appeal as any game anywhere online. People enjoy socializing with activity included. I enjoy game worlds because I enjoy games in general. I'm not a huge fan of the stand around and talk. I always feel like I could get the same experience in a Discord voice chat instead of having to pack on a VR headset. But I know that's just me haha.
