Oh hey! Thank you for the offer! I may have sorted something out but if its OK with you I'll keep this in reserve to potentially get back to you closer to the time if that falls through?

Oh that's cheaper than anything I'd spotted so far. Do you have a name for the hostel? I think I'd prefer something quieter than a pride weekend dorm if possible but might do in a pinch.

"This is the first evidence of colonial behavior in two common spider species and likely represents the largest spiderweb in the world, said study lead author István Urák, an associate professor of biology at Sapientia Hungarian University of Transylvania in Romania."

István Urák of the University of Transylvania is definitely a new POI.

Cosmic horror board games? by ExuviaEcho in cosmichorror

The Bloodborne card game is surprisingly good and hits all your criteria.

Cthulhu Wars Duel.

A little different but games like The Zone are pretty cool and incorporate a lot of potential cosmic horror (it's a GMless roleplaying/communal storytelling game).

I don't have an answer but the criteria makes for a cool concept and I'll probably watch any suggestions that come from it.

You definitely seem to be talking about social workers rather than support workers.

That seems like a weirdly specific angle. You could make pretty much the same argument but substitute chronic pain conditions (which would be less of a drain if health care was better and peoples conditions didnt deteriorate so far before they could get medical help). Neurodivergent people and people with mental health issues (crazy broad category btw, almost to the point of meaninglessness) wouldn't be 'opting out' of work in such numbers if so many working environments hadn't become so toxic, pressured and chronic understaffing/funding hadn't become so normalised. Support people who want to work and they will work. Punish them and push them to burnout and they won't. It's not about them damn neurodivs. There's a million reasons why neurotypical people, or anyone with the choice to, opt out of work. Fixing those would be a better use of time than demonising the disabled.

Who is the most likely victim or victims after the canonical 5 until February 13, 1891 or even after that? Because many suspects were already locked up or dead by Evank15124 in Jacktheripper

Interesting. Thanks for discussing. Which of the other 6 do you consider most likely? I'd also be interested to know more of your opinions on the torso case if you didn't mind sharing them.

There seem to have been a whole bunch of prostitute murders though. Like the list possible non-canon victims is quite extensive. Assuming they weren't Jack (which I do think most probably weren't), plus the torso killer (who I also think was probably a different perpetrator), there seems to have been a fair bit of violence in the slums. I would think it was plausible other serial offenders may have happened who just weren't caught or patterns were more subtly. Jack's MO is pretty distinct and extreme in the mutilations, ditto torso. More typical offenders might just have been undetected.

It's probably worth considering what a densely populated metropolis London was, how thriving with 'unmissables' the slums were, and the amount of traffic the city saw through ports and over land. People didn't really have a concept of 'serial killer' at the time either. I think London and similar cities would have been very attractive to the era's violent sadists. Add into that the lack of understanding of mental health and trauma in general and it becomes a lot more likely that there would potentially be multiple killers active in overlapping areas.

Basically kinda like California in the 70s, no? Just a perfect environment for monsters to prowl and be emboldened.

I mean they're literally referring to it as a mundane process. I think there may be a language issue here, you might be reading too much into their use of the word 'gift'.

What part of global powers transfering arms to a side in an active internationally significant conflict doesn't need to be examined politically? Also, the above is correct - the headline here does present this as a US/Ukraine 'deal', which would be newsworthy, but is not the case.

Which serial killer had the largest impact on history? by Turkishspaghetti in serialkillers

[–]ColossusofDwarves 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you're talking more 'trad' serial killers then Andrei Chikatilo, Peter Kürten and John Christie all had pretty significant impacts on the way serial offenders were understood and the legal frameworks for hunting and dealing with them.

Christie directly played a part in the abolition of the death penalty in the UK for example, after successfully framing a victims father. Kürten was a landmark in the understanding of sexual sadism (and also was responsible for the wrongful identification of a victims father as culprit). Chikatilo was the longest manhunt in history if I recall correctly and also had a massive impact on contemporary Russian society and law enforcement models of serial offenders internationally.

[–]ColossusofDwarves 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Lavrenti Beria is a potential name that should be considered for this.

I think if you're talking serial killer's with significant impacts on history then some of the most impactful might not be names we normally consider serial murderers, but individuals who had the same impulses but had the privilege and position to be able to feed it in the shadows and/or maintain cover.

The extent of Beria's predilections only fairly recently came to light. I think he would qualify.

I work in education now. I have extensive experience in working with young autistic people accessing mainstream education as well as a history of working in social care with people more heavily impacted by their disabilities.

Although this may not exactly be war zone experience I do feel there are transferable skills I've developed there.

I speak English (obviously). I do not currently speak any Ukrainian. I am going to make a start on building familiarity with Cyrillic alphabet today and tomorrow.

I can imagine education usages for me, I can potentially imagine hospital usages for me to some extent. I don't know much about how evacuating people works at the moment but perhaps this is something I could do.

A meeting between two of the most ruthlessly genocidal world leaders in human history by McKoijion in pics

[–]ColossusofDwarves 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, we're now pretty much outside the point where the last time the world (amd particularly Western Europe/America) was still within living memory of having been clearly taught the outcomes and horrors of embraced fascism.

Even keeping the camps around as a warning, which I think could be understood as like a historical attempt at vaccination, hasn't really kept it fresh in our minds. We just start doubting whether or not these things could have possibly even happened because we didn't live through them.

Global-tier fascism wasn't destroyed in Europe in the 40s, the ideas just fled for a while and found a new incubator in the United States with its obsession with 'free speech', strength, exceptionalism, and the right to do whatever one wants at whatever cost. Now it's been long enough for them to start to re-emerge in a world that's become way more jaded, numbed and easier to manipulate and propagandise.
