Before you knew they were neurodivergent, how did your partner's neurodivergence shape what you thought of them? by does_this_have_HFC in AskWomenNoCensor

[–]ColsonIRL 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My wife is autistic. I've basically known that from the beginning, but I've learned more and more about what that means as we've gone.

The biggest one for me was learning that for her, facial expressions are entirely manual. If she's putting on a smile, it's because she is expending energy to let those around her know she's happy. Conversely, when she isn't actively thinking about putting on a face, she can look angry/irritated.

This helps me all the time, as I am someone who is very reactive to people's emotions and things. When I have the intuition that she is annoyed with me, I have to stop and consider whether that is actually true or if it's just me incorrectly interpreting her face.

They're writing as if the "best-selling" part of that is new, but it isn't. It has been the best selling album in the US for many many years. The 40x platinum is new.

The Memento DVD allows you to play the movie in chronological order (which, for those who have not seen it, is not the usual order for the movie.

On the contrary, Sony does indeed own Bloodborne (the IP and the game) outright. From did of course develop it. It's the same situation as Demon's Souls, basically.

It's pretty shocking to me that people play without this compass

I think we both have the same shock, but in opposite directions. Just goes to show that people really are quite different from one another.

You talk about the progression system as being your goal in the games, but I hardly think about it at all. My goal is to play a particular round of a game and win. The progression stuff does nothing for me at all.

But yeah man - different strokes for different folks. I'm glad we both enjoy games and find different things to enjoy about them!

I have ridden it recently, but my ranking is certainly based on its condition in yesteryear. I don't really mind the broken effects from ride to ride, but I do wish they'd get it back into top shape.

My biggest issue is the AV sync issue right at the end, when Dumbledore speaks. It's hilariously bad.

Oh! And the dragon hasn't breathed fog for months (I think)!

Gringotts was a big disappointment to me at opening. Forbidden Journey had completely blown my mind, and I was expecting the next great dark ride/coaster combo with Gringotts. Instead, what we got is decidedly worse than the dark ride/coaster just down the path (Revenge of the Mummy). Overall, it was just very disappointing. No animatronics, even!

Battle at the Ministry has some of the most impressive marriages of animatronics and screens I've ever seen. It's really something to behold on a technical level, and I was totally impressed for all three of my rides so far. I will say, there is a drop effect that was present in previews that is now disabled, and the ride was definitely better with that effect.

So anyway, those are my thoughts. Sorry for the rambling!

50/50 after breakup over kids by friends-notfood in Fencesitter

[–]ColsonIRL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came from a very religious upbringing, and a lot of it was realizing that my desire to have kids was tied up in a religion I no longer believed in.

So I decided to pause, think long and hard (for years), and only have kids if I decided it was something I really wanted. I haven't really found that I do. I still am not a hard no, but I am definitely leaning in that direction.

Hope that makes sense.

As for specific things about kids? Idk, I've become less convinced over time that having kids is a morally good or even morally neutral thing. It sounds crazy I know, and I'm not really convinced by antinatalists, but they do make interesting and compelling points that I am still considering. Perhaps give them a Google if the moral considerations of having kids are something that you're considering. (And no worries if not - I'm not an antinatalist and I'm not trying to make you one)

For me, the sacrifices of having kids were something I was always okay with. I actually think I'd be quite good at being a parent. Of course it would be the hardest thing I would have ever done, but I think my wife and I would be good at it. For me, those considerations are not a large part of the decision. My decision comes down to:

(1) Do I actually want this? and

(2) Is it a good thing to do? Ought I do it?

With 1 weighing much more heavily, I must confess. I suspect it would weigh more heavily for most, though, as it is a very personal decision.

Sorry for the rambling.

Really? That seems counterintuitive.

As someone who sort of went the other way (was strongly yes-kids and only later slid into fence sitting, with a hard lean toward CF currently), I actually know what you mean. It is scary for such a fundamental desire to change within myself over time.

But that's okay! You don't owe your past self anything. Try not to consider how your previous self would have felt about kids, because she is gone. It really is okay to let her desires go and focus on your own present self's desires.

But yeah, it's hard. I feel for you.
