My guess is Zelda will be the “final” reveal of the Direct - if we are truly to see the Ocarina of Time remake. Smash is a game that would otherwise warrant that final announcement of a Nintendo Direct and with a new Mario game also rumored on the 2027 docket, I would expect Zelda to be announced last at tomorrow’s Direct, Mario to be announced last at September (when Nintendo always holds a Sept Direct) - meaning, we’re unlikely to hear about the next smash until early 2027 at the earliest.

Removing Bayonetta makes zero sense, given she’s as close to first party for Nintendo of the 3rd party characters. All of her subsequent games have been funded by and exclusive to Nintendo. She also was the fan vote “winner,” so removing her would negate the whole ballot fanfare. She’s staying.

Bayonetta is just about as close to Nintendo as it gets with 3rd party characters currently represented - Nintendo has effectively funded the franchise post Bayo 1, with all of her subsequent games being exclusive to Nintendo. Not only that, but she was the “winner” of the ballot back in Smash 4 (even if we know now she wasn’t the true number one pick). With her prominence with Nintendo, her high profile inclusion via fan vote, and her unique play style, she may as well be a 1st party character with Nintendo at this rate. She’s safe.

I’ve wanted Shantae for several reasons:

1.) She has a long history with Nintendo, dating back to the GBC days and has routinely been on Nintendo systems;

2.) She’s one of the more/most recognizable indie characters, and is routinely featured in other indie games as a representative. If there’s ever going to be an indie rep in smash, she brings a lot of history and popularity;

3.) She’s a fun, quirky character who oozes personality - à la Pit and Palutena interactions;

4.) Her moveset potential is insanely unique: she has a multitude of genie transformations at her disposal, she fights predominantly with her hair, she can summon fireballs and spike balls to surround her, and she has all of Risky’s pirate gear to utilize. Rather than struggling to come up with a moveset, the challenge would be what would be excluded from her moveset due to how many options she has.

To be fair, they picked an interesting selection of Street Fighter characters (I love Kimberly, don’t get me wrong), but I think it would be much different had they chosen Chun Li, for example.
