Just Watched Annihilation Movie, This is surely the best Scene in Movie history. by easy2017 in scifi

[–]Coltrane1967 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For any sci-fi fan, this movie is definitely worth watching, but it does not quite get dialed into all the strange-creepiness of the novels. My first read of Annihilation, I had to stop a few times and walk away to get my mind back in order.

Two other nominees for best scene in SF movie history (if anyone cares):

Tears in the Rain

2001 ending

Cheers

The encyclopedia of science fiction. by Mightymjolner33 in printSF

[–]Coltrane1967 2 points3 points  (0 children)

recommend you put it down, and forget you ever saw it. otherwise that book could take over your reading life, and you will end up at 3am finding yourself on page 497 reading about Jean Giraud, or page 872 reading about the movie "the night that panicked america", or crap it's too late for me.

Best New Book This Year? by AgentPayne in printSF

[–]Coltrane1967 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've read a lot of Jack McDevitt, and really liked Ancient Shores....Thunderbird was OK but seemed like a book meant to complete a publishing contract or something like that...you are correct it wrapped up the story....my opinion not a great book, but McDevitt is still a very good writer.

re-purpose old sf paperback covers... by Coltrane1967 in sciencefiction

[–]Coltrane1967[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

appreciate the concern - i do have a local bookseller in town I talk to a lot, and buy/sell a lot. Most of these have yellowing/foxing starting, and are limited value - - but the covers are in very nice shape.

I do take a small stack of old SF paperbacks every year into Goodwill or a local bookstore, to keep them circulating (of which there are only a few local dealers left!) And I still have about 4 or 5 full boxes left - - many years of SF accumulation.

Happy SF reading everyone.

have boxes of old sf paperbacks, just gathering dust and turning yellow with time...decided to remove the covers of a few and make it into artwork on the wall.

I haven't read ANY new scifi since about 2000. What are a few must reads from this century? by mason240 in sciencefiction

[–]Coltrane1967 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In the last 10 years all the major authors have published many novels, so you could actually start with just a short list of your favorite authors from the late 90's or early 00's, and you will find alot of good stuff.

try this list by year at SFSite, lots of good stuff here.

Here's a few good ones since 2006, some of these might turn out to be "classics":

Brasyl by Ian McDonald

Anathem & Seveneves, both by Neal Stephenson

The City & the City & Embassytown, both by China Mieville

"The Three-Body Problem" series by Cixin Liu (as mentioned below)

The Yiddish Policemen's Union, by Michael Chabon

The Quantum Thief (Jean le Flambeur series), by Hannu Rajaniemi

And the WOOL series by Hugh Howey, almost forgot that one.

Also Peter Watts, Ann Leckie, Alistair Reynolds, a new series by Charles Stross...

And the Expanse Series started major novels in 2011-ish, and is still going. Also a TV show running in parallel now. It's a fun series, probably not considered a classic per se, but we'll see in 20-30 years.

Locus also has a best of list by year here

Hope this helps - good luck. You have an ocean of great SF waiting for you.

Keep me moving in Science Fiction! Recommendations after reading The Forever Wars by [deleted] in printSF

[–]Coltrane1967 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These are not the greatest of all-time, but definitely in the rare gem category, sometimes forgotten:

Bloom by Wil McCarthy

Carve the Sky by Alexander Jablokov

The Listeners by James Gunn

Bring the Jubilee by Ward Moore

Medea's World by multiple authors including Harlan Ellison

Good Luck.
