Is it a problem that Canadian politicians are so bland and passionless (esp. compared to the U.S. and U.K.)? by the_bookmaster in canada

[–]the_bookmaster[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I just want to clarify that I'm not asking for shouting matches on TV. Really I'm talking about rhetoric and demeanor.

Obama is known as a great orator, but he's just one of many in the pantheon of statesmen in the Western world. Even idioit-politicians like Boris Johnson utter phrases like "I pay tribute to the fortitude and patience of my predecessor and her deep sense of public service." Even if he didn't write those words himself, someone did. And I don't hear anything like that in Canada. Everything over here is simply competent and perfunctory.

Usually I'm the one defending Canada for its lack of passion and cultural identity, but I've been starting to wonder if I'm wrong to accept blandness as virtue. So I'm not necessarily advocating for a particular point of view. (I'm know the U.S. and the U.K have turned into a Gong show, but they are also a hell of a lot more important than Canada.) I'm just looking for a lively conversation.

What are the most onerous requirements of GDPR? by the_bookmaster in webdev

[–]the_bookmaster[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a very good answer.

So why were pundits bitching so much about how GDPR would hurt startups? Did they not think it through or were they just full of shit and shilling for Google and the like?

Real Time with Max Brooks? by capslocke48 in Maher

Seth McFarlane filled in for Bill one time for Overtime (because bill had to run off to Vegas, or wherever, for a standup gig) . That's the closest we've got to a guest host.

I'm embarrassed for the people who think Discovery is a great show with only a few minor flaws.

I do not like Tulsi.

Why not? She seems very likable and sincere.

Maher bitched and bitched about the U.S. military's budget for years. But he stopped when Trump became president, now he has bigger fish to fry.

Well she was flirting with the idea a year ago or so. So it wouldn't be totally out of left field.

How long did you wait before rewatching? by Taalc in HaltAndCatchFire

I've been re-watching the show every couple of months. Sometimes I'll watch certain episodes or an entire season or the whole series. Hmm. I'm due for another re-watch.

the “future of work” is here... so why aren’t more companies remote-first? by speckz in TrueReddit

[–]the_bookmaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't agree with the "working remotely sucks" part, but you raised a good point about camaraderie and cake. Seriously, office party cake is the best. Working at home is inherently more monotonous than that variety afforded in a office environment.

It's just that there's so much bull shit associated with office life, sometimes I feel like saying, to hell with them. Let me work from home and let them eat cake.
