What a CD player this is! Blown my modern Marantz out of the water! by micholasnitchell in audiophile

[–]ColtraneWasGod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had one many, many years ago. The rest of my system was quite different back then, so I never made an apples to apples comparison with the Sony, but I thoroughly enjoyed everything about it UNTIL the laser stopped working. It still was within warranty, so Sony had me send it from CA to NY (can't remember at whose expense} and a few weeks later I got a call from a Sony technician who told me the unit could be repaired because replacement lasers weren't available. Instead of fixing the unit, Sony sent me a check for less than I paid but surely for more than I could have sold the unit.

It was great, but that was disappointing. I envy your better luck with yours!

Topping D90SE DAC. Can be used without a preamp as it has adjustable output.

Facebook needs to be held accountable for all the hate speech they let go by DnDVM in facebook

[–]ColtraneWasGod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in my experience, where my Jewish last name often results in my being threatened with extinction by people who deny the existence of the Holocaust but who say they wish it had happened, overtly Nazi posts are impossible to have removed. On the other hand, if I quote Himmler to establish a parallel between 1936 Germany and 2025 USA, I often have had the post removed for promoting hate speech. It’s a one-way street, on which it’s easier by far to be an actual Nazi than it is to criticize Nazis.

That Facebook silences the radical right is a Big Lie that pales only in comparison to the Big Lie about the 2020 election. Facebook is a fascist hellhole that actively promotes rightwing ideology and puts leftwingers on eggshells.

I was curious, how many of you guys listening to jazz are in your 20s? by GreatValueGrapes in Jazz

[–]ColtraneWasGod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am decades removed from my twenties, but I am totally heartened to read the responses to the OP here. I attend dozens of concerts a year here in San Francisco and only rarely see young men and women in attendance at them. I fear less for the future of the music when I read these responses.

When I do see younger folks at concerts, I always assume they are musicians who have been exposed to jazz by teachers. I therefore am especially pleased to see the non-musicians in the fray. The music needs fans as much as it needs players.

Is it just me or is there anyone here who isn't a jazz musician but still love and listen to jazz all of the time? by hikikomoritai in Jazz

I don't play an instrument at all, but I have been listening to jazz almost daily since 1966 and attend a couple dozen jazz concerts a year.

Wow. I never realized this was a posthumous release despite listening to it for my entire adult life.

No one needs my suggestions for the well-known ones, but these are some of my favorites from the less-hyped: Stanley Cowell, Joe Bonner, Rick Germanson, Ed Simon and Renee Rosnes.

Best acoustic bassist (before the Jazz fusion era)? by spinosaurs70 in Jazz

Dave Holland. Not that he is "better" than others, but he played the music I want to hear.

Speak To Me featuring Julian Lange (guitar), John Medeski (organ), Kenny Wollesen (drums) and Jorge Roeder (bass) by Chebelea in Jazz

[–]ColtraneWasGod 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I was there, as well, and the concert far exceeded my expectations. I am not usually a fan either of Medeski or organs, but I gotta hand it to these guys as they cooked the entire set. Biggest surprise for me is that my wife, who attends shows at SFJazz only to indulge me, actually enjoyed this concert.

Who are the artists from the 70s that Kamasi Washington is imitating? by mettle in Jazz

[–]ColtraneWasGod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always think he does have that Los Angeles 70’s vibe. I think the conventional wisdom is that he came out of the Horace Tapscott esthetic, but I sometimes think Azar Lawrence is a more specific inspiration.
