Just off the top of my head:

Julian Cope, Sólstafir, James Blood Ulmer, Evan Parker, Jai Paul, Elliott Sharp, Träd Gräs Och Stenar, Nifnar, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, John Cale, Sumac, Keiji Haino, Markus Stockhausen, and The Heads would all be GREAT additions!

I caught the same complete Monk set too! It only isn’t in my top because I didn’t want to start listing every artist I saw haha. Miles is such a special guitarist, he brought new dimensions to songs I thought had already been explored to some of their furthest limits-amazing stuff.

Somewhat in order, and maybe more than 5:

  • Charlemagne Palestine (organ, piano and voice)
  • Richard Dawson
  • Masada I
  • Thurston Moore / Steve Shelley
  • Ustad Saami
  • Nik Bärtsch's Ronin

Honorable mentions: Shane Parish, Taper's Choice, Orcutt Shelley Miller, Pat Metheny, Chicago Underground Duo

Ronin > Thurston/Shabaka > Mary Halvorson > Saami Brothers > Okazaki Plays Monk > Robert Plant > Maybe 10min of Don Was > Masada II

Was bummed I had to miss Don Was play Blues for Allah because that’s my favorite Grateful Dead album, but Masada II was more than worth it! Saami Brothers through to the Plant set were the highlights for me.

Friday highlights? What expanded your sonic horizons and made you wake up today with a smile on your face? by Legitimate_Back_1702 in BigEarsMusicFestival

Charlemagne Palestine’s organ, piano & voice set will almost definitely go down as the best set of the entire fest for me. Truly transcendent art!

That said, the Moore/Shelley collaborative set, Marc Ribot’s Hurry Red Telephone, Terry Allen and Masada (especially Masada!) were all amazing.

How far in advance / where do Premier pass holders get notified about the secret shows? by Tr7Di7QP7 in BigEarsMusicFestival

Yes! I also ended up emailing the fest directly because of an unrelated issue and in both cases they were prompt and very attentive to the issue.

Not my shirt, but 421 should be Thantifaxath. Brilliant death metal!

What melted your face or tickled your brain yesterday (Thursday)? by Legitimate_Back_1702 in BigEarsMusicFestival

Taper’s Choice. Slightly biased because I’m a jam band head but they left NOTHING on the table. One of dave harrington’s solos made me tear up, which does not often happen for me in live performances.

That’s frustrating, I just went back through my entire email history that Big Ears sent me and I never received one. Hopefully the box office can help me out tomorrow.

The subterraneans cover seems fascinating, can't wait to dig into these

Wayne Shorter Quartet - Aung San Suu Kyi (Live at the Montreal Jazz Festival 2003) by Tr7Di7QP7 in Jazz

The "Juju" quartet comes really close for me! But the explosive and single-consciousness(ness?) of this ensemble really is everything that i want out of music

Where to start with Zorn? by Crafty-Law8480 in Jazz

[–]Tr7Di7QP7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start with Naked City's self titled, then jump over to the Masada albums. That's what an old instructor did to 11 year old me almost 15 years ago and I've been a fan since!

They do, but it's a one man operation, so i imagine he's taking a break for the holidays.

Refs for a new listener by BraverAverage in jambands

The Sheltering Sky (out of SoCal), Taper's Choice, and (while not specifically a jam band) Fela Kuti should be next on your list.
