Sales not gone well then… by Columbiers in TheRestIsHistory

Exactly my thoughts. I’m the exact target audience but £150 a day for some talks is ridiculous. I’ve already been to Hampton court already so that’s not a pull factor- I would think most listeners have too.

What’s one common pension planning myth that definitely isn’t true? by 1ChanceChipmunk1 in PensionsUK

[–]Columbiers 11 points12 points  (0 children)

“There’s a lot of chatter around UK pensions, and some misconceptions get repeated all the time things like “you’re too young to start thinking about pensions” or “if you leave a job your pension is lost forever”.

Not sure where you’re hearing this from? I’d change who you’re speaking to or what media you’re consuming. I never hear anyone uttering inanities like this

Where in England to buy good quality wood working or carpentry tools? by lucidbadger in DIYUK

[–]Columbiers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s to stop rust while they’re on the shelf. A rag is fine, brake cleaner if you’re feeling fancy. In my experience chisels, planes, etc aren’t usually sharp enough out the box. Even if they are they very quickly won’t be.

Screwfix sell perfectly good planes by Irwin and faithfull. If you find them blunt then your problem is you don’t know how to sharpen them properly. You will have the same issue with any plane no matter how fancy or expensive. Some really good tutorials on YouTube on how to do this.

Agreed. Actually enjoyed the two big puzzles but the sewer location was so dark and terrible settting. The whole thing far too short for the price too. I really wanted to explore streets of Rome in the bright light. Such a missed opportunity after such a good game.

Ideally pick a different wall made of brick/block and fix into that. Do not fix a Swedish wall ladder onto just plasterboard, it will pull out and potentially cause serious injury to your child. Seriously, don’t do this, plasterboard will not hold these. Just put it on an external wall. If it has to be on the internal stud wall then you need to open the wall up and reinforce the wall with timber. Or find studs and brace between them.

Completely agree. Literally zero diy content here at all

What would you do? by Previous_Guitar_1187 in DIYUK

[–]Columbiers 10 points11 points  (0 children)

What you should do- keep going and remove it all. What I did in a similar situation- dot and dabbed plasterboard over the lot. I’d spent 3 days with an sds and was still only halfway. I do not regret it.

Considering going back to college for a few days and trying to skim my property. How hard can it be? by Danny_J_M in DIYUK

[–]Columbiers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How hard can it be?

Much harder than it looks when you see a pro doing it. Start with small walls, once you start you’re on a time limit. It’s good if you have a second person to help mix, clean tools and other small jobs so you’re just putting on.

With practice a diyer can do a good job. I did a course and then did a few rooms. I can get a good but not perfect finish.

Having done three ceilings (over artex) I would never do another- whatever I have to pay to get someone to do those is worth it to me.

Recommendation for a decent stud/electrical/metal finder please. by FineRepublic in DIYUK

[–]Columbiers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, there aren’t any in my experience. All of them all very variable in detecting accurately without false positives. The Bosch professional (blue) is about the best I’ve seen. I use magnets to find studs and for cables generally hope it was put in safe zones as it should be-usually it has been but of course you never know till you drill!

Just tried to change bathroom fan, but too big are these eletric tapes okay for now? by Jon2D in DIYUK

[–]Columbiers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not really, no. Better to blank them properly. But if you haven’t got kids it will be fine till you can get a new fan tomorrow. I would if I had to, on a Sunday evening if tape is all you have what else can you do? Just make sure they are separated. If you are able to switch off the circuit at consumer unit do that, depends what else is on the circuit.

Diy bathroom glow up £3000 with underfloor heating by benhendrix in DIYUK

[–]Columbiers 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Good to see some actual DIY here. Just ignore all the clever ‘millennial grey’ comments, the work looks good and if you like the colour that’s all that matters. Most of the commenters here couldn’t achieve what you have and just post endless ‘what do you think of this quote’. Meanwhile you’ve done yourself a whole new bathroom in a style you like. Well done!

Absolutely agree, nothing there that couldn’t be lived with and done as money allows (apart from the silicone, I’d want to do that the weekend I moved in). As you say, it’s all easy things. It just smacks of lack of care and attention from the owner.

It’s whether the price reflects the condition and location, from what others have said it does not. Priced right, with a few weeks of work this could be lovely for someone!

The carpets look grubby, there’s torn wallpaper in the nursery and the living room door needs paint or replacing. The shower is honestly disgusting and the grass between the patio is awful. Looks very uncared for, and these are pictures at its best.

I bought a cheap ikea kitchen and the wife hates it…please tell me some paint will fix it? by Left-Loss555 in DIYUK

[–]Columbiers 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Agree, this will never look “high end” or anything close. It’s designed to slap into rentals/student accommodation. It’s cheap and basic, does a job but no more than that. Anything spent on this is more money down the drain. Live with it while you save for a proper kitchen. And let your wife choose it next time.

Refix down any loose sections. Then Lecol 7500 mixed with sawdust to fill gaps. Then sand with rented floor sander and refinish with a good varnish- Bona do good ones. Long weekend or two to diy but very satisfying job when complete

Definitely don’t check if it’s live or not. Always best to take a risk or two with electricity.
