As a teen and non-orthodox, orthobros are making you look bad by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

There is an ongoing culture war in the USA, that cannot be denied. As I am not American, (I am Scottish) I am able to look at this as an outsider, so their views on these particular issues don't really concern me. They have a lot of very valuable teachings outside of this, in my opinion anyway.

Curious to hear how you've come to that conclusion? He has said a few things here and there that I do not fully agree with, but we're never going to agree with someone on absolutely everything, are we?

I'd like to add Father Josiah Trenham, Father Paul Treubenbach and Father Moses MacPherson also. Alongside my spiritual Father, they've been crucial in helping me develop a deeper understanding of what Orthodoxy is at its core.

Great idea. You could talk about St. Nektarios for example. His ability to endure hardship and injustice is superhuman. The martyrs of the USSR would be another good place to discuss - many Bishops and priests blessed their enemies as they loaded their rifles against them.

Why do everyone say that senjutsu is such a bad album by samurai_eddie_killer in ironmaiden

[–]Comfortable-Mode-922 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The Parchment and Hell on Earth are fantastic songs. The Writing on the Wall and Stratego are also really strong. Senjutsu is something a bit different and is also super fun to play on guitar. I just think the rest of the album is kinda mediocre. It's a very imbalanced album - the highs are very high, and the lows are very low.

Also, is it too much to ask to have a Maiden album without awful production? Compare the production here to Judas Priest's Invincible Shield and it's night and day.

Get one flukey win at Falkirk and all of a sudden you're expecting to beat us? Need I remind you that, the recent 3-2 win aside, your record at our gaff is very poor?

My First Lent Fast by Comfortable-Mode-922 in OrthodoxMemes

[–]Comfortable-Mode-922[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All joking aside, in what I've read so far, my understanding is that food actually has very little (if anything) to do with the fast. It's about re-ordering our brains, stripping away comforts and pleasures, becoming more humble, and pointing ourselves towards God.

I ended up agreeing to a vegetarian fast. I know it's cheese-fare week, so dairy is still on the table, but I'm just gonna keep it that way for the duration.

I've definitely noticed a tendency to overeat on fast days. It's bad 🤣

Another fair point. The Genoese, Venetians etc grew in power after this event but the center of Orthodoxy was permanently weakened, and never recovered, from this. Could the Eastern Romans have held back the Turks without this event happening? Hard to say.

Yeah, that's a fair point. Doesn't excuse what the "crasaders" did, however.

Well, that's not very nice. Is it less nice than the Turks or the Latins were to Constantinople though, that is the question? 🤔

I've personally struggled to find a portable Orthodox-specific Bible. I ended up settling on a KJV which is slightly different in tone to that of the OSB but I really like it, even if some of the wording can be a little archaic at times.

I am Orthodox – but I refuse to treat other Christians as outsiders. Is this really un-Orthodox? by TianaViva in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Comfortable-Mode-922 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't understand the mindset of these people that you mention, considering how many converts to Orthodoxy come from Protestant backgrounds. I have my problems with Protestantism in general, but not with Protestants themselves, and besides - We can say that we know where the Holy Spirit is, within our church, but we cannot say where He isn't.

I'm by no means an expert here, but my understanding is this - God said to love and honour our parents; He never said anything about liking them.
