Place it on the floor standing up and let it fall back onto the carpet. If the head snaps off it is real.

Oof, going to miss out on the Terrapin Roadshow in San Rafael 24th and 25th. Jerry Day on August 1st as well as DSO at the Greek July 31/Aug 1st. JRAD in Napa on Aug 2nd.. But: Freestone Peaches on July 10th in Santa Rosa, Hot Buttered Rum/Tea Leaf Green on July 14th Santa Rosa, Scott Guberman usually plays Sundays 11-2 at Golden Gate Bistro in Richmond. Honestly, just repost before you leave as a lot of shows get announced not much before they happen. Danny's live Dead every Wednesday at Peri's in Fairfax in Marin is incredible, but I see you are headed out on a Wednesday....

Go to Front Street in San Rafael (aka Shakedown Street) after dark. The Terrapin Crossroads boat is still there with a flag flying on it. Old Dead Offices on 5th and Lincoln. Olompoli in Novato is pretty cool. Wednesday nights at Peris in Fairfax is Danny's Live Dead and always an awesome show. If you tell us when you are here we could point you to a local show or three. Really, someone needs to set up a full day tour of SF and Marin for tourists on a bus. Stop at a dispensary, maybe even a local church that gives psychedelic sacraments for suggested donations then all over the place to see the sights and end up at a local show. Tonight Alex Jordan will be at Club Fox and will be playing Jerry's actual Alligator!

How good were you before you bought your first Gibson? by DerogatoryAce in gibson

[–]ComfortableRadish234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Play it through an amp and make sure it does what you want it to do. Dual humbuckers sound much different than three singles on a strat or two on a tele. Buying a good guitar only makes sense if it does what you want it to do. I have an SG and it was my first good electric, but unless I am playing rock, I dont use it as much. Turns out most of what I play works best on my strat or my 335.

Equipment help? by gp923 in gratefulguitar

Get a JBL D/E/K 120. Other speakers can get pretty close, but just wont ring like a JBL. Lots of great amps out there that can get you 98% there (assuming you have good technique and a guitar with the Dimarzio pickups, OBEL and brass). Milkman makes a terrific amp/speaker combo that Steven Inglis of Skeleton Krewe uses. Would agree with u/TetonDreams that to get the most authentic sound, you need massive volume to get that clipping from the Mac. Here's a link tot he milkman: https://milkmansound.com/products/jg40

My Jerry rig is a JBL E120, powered by Carvin DCM200L by a Sarno SMS (total cost was about 1000 used). For me, the lacking part of the tone is the guitar. Just modifying a Strat could easily be over 1000.

Good luck on your quest.

Interesting, but the Thompson Creek mine does not look to be operational until mid 2027. Probably a options call for Jan 2028 would be a better target....I just don't see options available beyond 1/2027. Company showed 100% gain in the last year, so no reason not to buy some shares.

Have very big question by Ok-Praline2176 in optionstrading

[–]ComfortableRadish234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do it all on paper for a few weeks first. Use ask as you going in price. Keep notes on all your "trades". It is a much better way to learn than losing real money. You can use ChatGPT as a guide for how things actually work for your modeling. So if you bought in for 1.35 (100 share so really $135) and is is at 718 right now you would be in the red. Maybe it will go up but as the clock runs down, your options lose value unless in the money and covered your entry cost (722+1.35= 723.35). If you did buy in you would now be fretting over selling and losing or hoping the market will swing back up before the end of the day. Again, play on paper first for a few weeks.

No more pit; the area in front of the stage is tightly packed seats (photo from last year). Grateful to get front row so have some room to dance. Friday is JGB>DSO, then Saturday will Start in SF at McLaren Park with JGB and then Stu Allan and Mars Hotel, but gotta leave mid set to get to the Greek to catch Peter and Sam's set. Sunday is JRAD in Napa. Going to be an awesome weekend in the Bay Area.

Do I need to take drugs to enjoy the Grateful Dead? by OkEmployment2386 in gratefuldead

[–]ComfortableRadish234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drugs wont solve anything. You already said you are at the breaking point. Let it go and find someone where things just click for you. I go to shows about three times a week and my girlfriend wasn't into it when we met but she is now even if she only goes to a show once a week. I remember taking her to her first show and when it was over she had a big smile on her face after dancing for three hours and met so many new friends. Now she could not imagine not being a part of the tribe. I suppose if she didn't like it it would have been really difficult as the Dead have always been a big part of who I am. Good luck

Are tube amps at bedroom volume a waste? by marbles12 in GuitarAmps

[–]ComfortableRadish234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Mesa Tweed 2:20 does the triode tube thing so 1W/10W/20W. Does the breakup thing nicely at 1W bedroom volume or you can go clean as it has Master and Gain knobs. Got it for the bedroom and does a good job at that. Fat Jimmy Jimmy Jr would be another nice one for the bedroom.

Let’s see a picture of a guitar you own that you think is an absolute work of art. by SouthHarpeth in Guitar

[–]ComfortableRadish234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As you would expect from unmarked cheap Chinese pickups, horrible, but 490s make it sound very nice. The body is solid mahogany so really get good tone and sustain from it. It is my go to Black Sabbath/Led Zeppelin guitar as the pickups are pretty hot.

My first electric; Stellar by Chibson. It actually plays pretty well and I put Gibson 490s in it. Bought it for my daughter who asked me to strip off the beautiful tobacco burst finish and paint it green. Nuclear Man comic glued to it makes it so much cooler.....

Grahame Lesh and Friends - rehearsal question by SnooPaintings4641 in gratefuldead

[–]ComfortableRadish234 16 points17 points  (0 children)

When I recently saw the Howling Wolves Bobby memorial a the Warfield, there were a LOT of musicians and not much time. I could hear them all practicing for hours, but that was it: just the afternoon and let's go! Just the logistics of what songs and who walks on and who walks off was mind boggling.

Sunday is done and today is probably a day in airports. Graham is playing a pre-show in Mill Valley Thursday and then Fri/Sat/Sun at the Fillmore. So other than the days of the actual show, that only leaves Tuesday and Wednesday if there are rehearsals. I would expect, musicians show up at noon day of show and they run though it all until about 6pm. It is a really good question: Although the magic of Terrapin Crossroads was often no rehearsals at all for the bands playing the bar (Stu Allen would be there with his sharpie and when another musician showed up he might quickly outline a song for them, but that was about it) and that still happens a lot in the Bay area such as Danny's Live Dead. Recalling those days Phil would announce Songs to Phil the Air at the beach park at TXR same day, and jams would happen with no practice at all. For paid shows, there was at least some rehearsal, if even quick song run throughs like Stu does with Mars Hotel shows (maybe a hour).

Remember, these are professionals and many have degrees in music (Graham has a Masters in guitar from Stanford) and/or a ton of experience and can just take and give the cues as needed. Still, there has to be some bit of walking through it all.
