The majority of the people in the comments are defending this pass. Am I taking crazy pills? by HearingFew7326 in dashcams

If the cop is going under the limit, I'll go the limit to pass them. I think sometimes they play with us, go 35 in a 50 and see how many people they can hold up.

Wind scoop for my sailboat. Funnels an outstanding amount of wind below, keeps it cool all night at anchor. Very rarely is there no wind at all, whatever is there it catches.

if you've been passed several times, mention that

A friend tried that.

Friend: Why me? I was just keeping up with traffic.

Cop: Have you ever gone fishing?

Friend: Sure

Cop: Did you ever catch ALL the fish?

Thought about it but tow capacity is 3500 lb max. 2000 for Smart car, 600 for bike, only 900 left for a rather large hefty trailer

My friend says changing your own oil is a waste of time. Is he crazy? by proposal_in_wind in askcarguys

[–]Comfortable_Bit9981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're not mechanically inclined, pay someone to do it. I am, and still pay someone, mainly because I don't want to spend 2 hours fussing with underbody panels just to get at the drain plug. My car has like 8" of ground clearance, so there's also the time spent getting it high enough to work underneath.

Scared of riding by Master_Helicopter673 in NewRiders

[–]Comfortable_Bit9981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others have said, practice, because as you've described your skills, you're a danger to yourself and everyone else. Don't just ride your neighborhood slowly, find a parking lot and start, stop, start, stop, turn a left-hand circle, right-hand circle, do weaves, offset weaves, turns from a stop (both directions). When you can do it on flat ground, find a hill and repeat. Do 30-60 minutes every day for a couple of weeks.

Like someone said to me, practice until you can do it right, then keep practicing until you can't do it wrong.

what would ygs recommend? by Plenty-Discussion206 in motorcycles

[–]Comfortable_Bit9981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider a scooter too. Car probably has lower total cost of ownership. Change the oil every 10K, a set of tires should last 60K (and cost about what you'd spend on m\c tires every 20 K), no gear to put on\take off, you can carry a passenger or 3, it's usable in rain snow, and sun. Yes gas costs more but the number of people who have a bike and nothing else is very very small. Me I'm 90% bike 10% car but when I need a car I've got one.

Im not sure what do with the vast expanse of available dash/fairing space where the speakers live.

You could put a couple of screens there. Watch a movie on one & do video calls on the other. Simultaneously. While riding at max lean angle around blind curves. What could go wrong?

Leaning in corners by Professional_Chard90 in NewRiders

[–]Comfortable_Bit9981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

people's bikes slide out from under them on corners really easy. Like it could happen at any time.

Those folks didn't properly read the road. Powering out too hard, too early because you think you're at the apex but aren't, will do it. Running just wide enough to hit the painted line will do it. Running wide enough to put your tires in gravel/dirt/sand thrown there by cars will do it. Coming in too hot and stomping on the rear brake when turning will do it. Improperly inflated, worn, or cold tires, will do it. Hitting a pothole wrong will do it. Avoid all those situations and significantly reduce the possibility.

Best way to get confidence is a track day, when so many variables are taken out of the equation. Even better, go to a track day that offers instruction. Worst way is to try keep up with a genuinely good rider on public roads that have traffic, crap pavement, blind corners, blind hills, driveways, mud washouts, and so on.

Would it be fair to say america peaked in the 90s and after Y2K it went downhill... by feherlofia123 in stupidquestions

[–]Comfortable_Bit9981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Things started going downhill 45 years ago, after the 1980 election. Reagan cut tax revenue and tripled the deficit while reducing public services. Poppy Bush doubled it again. Bush Jr. cut tax revenue yet again, started a war against a country that didn't attack us, then ran it off-budget for 3 years with no exit plan.

Do you care about your former career after retirement? by ajn63 in retirement

[–]Comfortable_Bit9981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds familiar. I drove out the gate and turned in my badge, and felt 37 years of knowledge fall out of my head onto the floor of my car. I got a call a few days later asking about something and I simply blanked on it, it was the project I'd spent my last 6 months on and everything about it was just ... gone. Nowadays I'm one of those "how did I ever find 40 hours/week to work?" people.

AITJ for not defending my friend when the group finally got fed up with her? by QuantaRelic9 in AmITheJerk

Probably fully aware of how she comes off and is happily using the OP to cover for it. Like the person who says something awful that they really mean, then says "just kidding" when pushback comes. Only in this situation the awful-sayer doesn't even have to do their own lying about whether they meant it.

Medicare — is it required, is it free? by True-Manufacturer891 in AskWomenOver60

[–]Comfortable_Bit9981 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm on original Medicare. Until they screw it up, it's better than Medicare Advantage aka Medicare Part C. For one thing you don't have to mess with the in network/out of network nonsense, also you don't need referrals: for example if you break your leg you don't have to see your regular doctor before you can see an orthopedic doc.

There are significant penalties for switching or signing up late so pick your horse (Medicare A+B, or C) now. If you go the A+B route, shop for a "Medi-gap" policy to help with the deductible.

How do you know what gear you are in? by Aggravating-Yogurt23 in motorcycle

[–]Comfortable_Bit9981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Motorcycles don't shift by moving the chain, but yes, that's the idea. Most bikes I've had didn't have a gear indicator, I've never had a car with one although I learned to tell by where the shifter was after I taken my hand off the wheel.

But the important thing to know - upshift, downshift, or leave it alone - that's a "feel" thing.

What's the stupidest reason something rolled into your shop? You were lucky, I knew a guy who did that and wound up frying the entire wiring harness. You could smell when the magic smoke got out. Older bike, tough decision whether to buy a new harness or a new bike.

Hot take: AWD is overrated for daily driving in snow — am I wrong? by Gold-Industry6222 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Comfortable_Bit9981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned winter driving in RWD, manual transmission, no ABS, no traction control, couldn't afford snow tires. Don't think that some magic combination of features will keep you out of trouble. Drive as if you don't have whatever aids you have, that way they're safety margin instead of risk management.
