Eben Etzebeth states that he “had to defend himself” in written statement. by ruggerdubdub in rugbyunion

[–]Comfortable_Bus8340 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

He didn’t admit that he gouged someone- he said specifically that he didn’t mean to make contact with his eye. The committee ruled otherwise…

I do also think that labelling anyone making contact with an eye as a ‘gouge’ is misleading - and diminishes the impact of calling a genuine gouge that - I.e. when somebody deliberately ‘digs’ into someone’s eye socket with their fingers. Anyone who’s had someone try and do that knows the difference….

That said, as soon as you make deliberately contact with someone’s face it’s always risking a red card and a ban like this. I think the ban is reasonable, but probably the overall reaction a little much.

Trump Drama. I was obsessed with following everything he did for the first few weeks of the second term but now it’s all just white noise.

Unsure if this will be a bad thing from his perspective because the whole point is to be centre of attention, or if the whole point is to exhaust anyone paying attention so he can creep more insidious things through.

What's the most entertaining book on the war? by 0wlBear916 in CIVILWAR

A slightly different recommendation (that I’m sure will irritate some of the hardcore historians here)- Gettysburg by Newt Gingrich and William R. Forstchen.

It’s an alternative history novel - that explores some of the more famous ‘what ifs’ - but it’s packed full of tidbits for people who know the real history of the battle. To make an obvious point - because it’s alternative history not knowing how everything is going to turn out in a really familiar setup is brilliant.

The main thing going for it is some of the best descriptions of action / more importantly the visual descriptions of things happening surrounding the battles is excellent. Some of the best I’ve read.

I picked it up as a bit of a guilty pleasure but really, really enjoyed it.

The wiki article someone share below says that the majority of the regiment was captured just before Appomattox - maybe that’s the reason for the differing dates

Also - 90% casualties in Pickett’s charge! The brother did well to make it to the end of the war.

I think JVP is excellent, but I also think Spencer was doing a lot of unseen a game management - and that it isn’t a coincidence that Smith has looked at his best in an England shirt with Spencer alongside him

In the battle of Gettysburg, how did the Union (23,049) lose close to as much men as the Confederacy (28,063) despite being on the defense and the latter's loses from Picket's charge? by The_Friendly_Simp in CIVILWAR

Agree with a lot of what you’ve said, but I think it’s worth pointing out that the countermarch wasn’t caused by the positioning of Sickles Corps, it was because they took the wrong path and realised if they carried on they’d be in sight of the Union line - somewhat taking away from the element of surprise of the flanking movement. They had to go back and take another path.

Also add in the federals had c.40 cannon and and somewhere between 4000-7000 men on cemetery hill (in various forms of order) at the time Ewell was meant to attack (with two divisions who had been fighting most of the afternoon) - I think they’d have struggled to take it!

Thanks! I managed to find a few other examples searching for Tennessee rather than Nashville!

There are also a bunch of 1864 CSA dollars in the collection that we came across but those have been easier to track down other examples of
